The Pitch: Boxee is a popular, open-source media player based on a fork of the popular XBMC media center. With its attractive GUI, ability to play just about everything we threw at it, integrated social networking features, and wide array of online content, it’s no wonder that Boxee is the darling of media center hackers. And now, partnering with D-Link, Boxee is aiming to go mainstream with its first dedicated, no-hacking-required device with the Boxee Box. It will sell for $199 when it’s released next year.

Pros: Supports a wide array of audio and video formats. Integrated with Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites. Doesn’t require a companion computer. 802.11n wireless and Ethernet connection

Cons: Access to good content will probably require subscription.

Recommendation: The Boxee Box is sure to attract buzz at CES 2010 and could be a contender in the Last Gadget Standing competition.

Price: $199

Amazing product. I can't wait to get one.

This could be a sleeper. With Apple thinking the AppleTV is a "hobby" product and Windows media center requiring a computer, Boxee and D-Link could gain some market share. MLB (baseball) content could be a good lead off as a path to getting into the living rooms of non-geeks.

WDTV Live player does the same.. but it doesn't have the fancy gui.. that boxee promises..
  • Pjitesh
Thats not true...you STILL need a computer to connect to WDTV Live player. This one promises to work WITHOUT a computer, more in a direct competition to Acer Revo (sans the key board and the manual search thru browser). Can't wait to find out how it performs in real life...

The RF Remote with QWERTY is just too awsome!

How it works:

We welcome any and all 'hot' products slated to appear at CES. Our experts screen them. They'll continue to narrow the list until we get to a Top 25 and then a Top 10. We'll also conduct a online vote among the Top 25 to determine a "people's winner." The Top 10 will appear at a CES supersession where a live voting audience will determine which deserves to be the Last Gadget Standing.

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Jan. 9, 2010

Where: Room N255-257, LVCC, North Hall, 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
