Vyatta is pleased to announce the release of Vyatta Community Edition 4 (VC4), available for immediate download at www.vyatta.com or the new www.vyatta.org .

VC4 represents a substantial change to the Vyatta system. Nearly every subsystem was touched in some way. Major new features and enhancements include:

    * The new FusionCLI management interface. It's a group-up rethink of the way a Linux-based router should operate. You'll find it substantially easier to use networking and Linux functionality from the same prompt.

    * The routing protocols have been reworked for increased scalablity and performance. The performance of the new code was recently demonstrated in 3rd party testing of Vyatta versus the Cisco 7204/G1 and 7204/G2.

    * Remote access VPN support has been added. You can use either L2TP+IPSec or PPTP to create VPNs for road warriors or remote users. The protocols are compatible with native VPN clients on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

    * The QoS capabilities of the system have been enhanced. Vyatta now supports fine-grained control of QoS parameters. You can now determine rate shaping and bandwidth contraints of individual traffic types.

    * For customers wanting to configure multiple WAN service providers for high availability networks without the complexity of BGP, we have now added WAN load balancing. Simply connect your Vyatta system to multiple WAN links and let the system balance the traffic across them all. If a link goes down, traffic is automatically pushed to the remaining links.

    * PPPoE support has been added for DSL-connected environments.

    * Role-based access control has been added to allow you to create specific user roles with different functional priviledges.

    * DHCP client has been added to assign interface addresses dynamically, in environments where static IPs are not available (primarily broadband connections).

    * Equal cost multipath routing has been added to optimize routing performance when multiple equal-cost paths are available through the network.

As always, release notes and documentation are available at the Vyatta web site.

If you have feedback or questions about VC4, we invite you to join the Vyatta forums on vyatta.org.
