The evolution of Nokia and Ovi

By Adam posted on the 16th of May 2011 at 8:02AM

GLOBAL – Starting with first services on some of the new Nokia devices in July and August, Ovi services will be rebranded as Nokia services in a transition expected to continue into 2012. Each of the services under the Ovi umbrella will simply be rebranded as Nokia, with no planned disruption to the service roadmaps.

Nokia’s EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Jerri DeVard explains the shift:
“We have made the decision to change our service branding from Ovi to Nokia. By centralizing our services identity under one brand, not two, we will reinforce the powerful master brand of Nokia and unify our brand architecture – while continuing to deliver compellingopportunities and experiences for partners and consumers alike.”

The transition from Ovi to Nokia will begin in July this year, with the intention of it being completed across all countries and all services by the end of 2012. It’s likely that anybody buying a new Nokia smartphone or mobile phone later this year will start to see the new branding on services included within. However anybody already owning a Nokia phone will see this new rebranding through future software updates.

Jerri continues:
“The reasons for this decision includes the fact that Nokia is a well-known and highly-loved brand the world over. Our mobile experiences are tightly integrated with our devices – there is no longer a differentiation. For example, if consumers want the best mobile navigation experience, they know it’s a Nokia that they can rely on. These last few years, and moving forward, our mission remains unchanged: we will continue our work to deliver compelling, unified mobile service offerings and next-generation, disruptive technologies.”

This is solely a name-changing exercise and the service roadmaps will continue exactly as planned. The only difference consumers can expect to see is the replacement of the word Ovi with Nokia, not only on their device software but also in other places such as printed material or online media and advertisements. The transition should be a smooth and seamless one.

This is what nokia should did in the first place.

I was surprised to see the word OVI at the first time. Why won’t nokia use nokia instead of OVI??

    Anyway….
Good job nokia finally realize this.

  • http://conversations.nokia.com Phil at Nokia

Personally, I totally support this.  It makes a lot of sense.  One brand.  It’s simple.

  • http://twitter.com/zehjotkah Cosimo

I totally support this step, too.
Nokia Maps, Nokia Mail, Nokia Store. Perfect.
Will we see this rebranding in Nokias MeeGo/Harmattan devices as well?

  • http://dhruvbhutani.com Dhruv Bhutani

Very good decision ! Brand consolidation was seriously required. This should help Nokia retain its identity post the move to WP7 as well.

  • http://twitter.com/jainrounak Rounak Jain

course. But what baffles is, why create a brand and then simply kill it? You could have done away with it in the first place.

  • http://conversations.nokia.com Phil at Nokia

Yes, we will see rebranding, but it will take some time.  Some devices that are far along in their development will still use Ovi branding, but software updates will bring the changes back to Nokia branding.

  • http://conversations.nokia.com Phil at Nokia

    Well said!

  • Jukka

Why don’t just change directly to Microsoft which is also “well-known and highly-loved brand the world over”?

I think this makes a lot of sense, but it also highlights how strange the move to Ovi was in the first place. We started with Nokia Maps, after all – the move to Ovi was peculiar. And now after letting the Nokia brand lie flat, with the branding of Ovi finally really building up, we’re switching back to Nokia? I just hope Nokia sticks with it this time and has the confidence to drive its own brand. I look forward to using the Nokia store (at least people will know what I’m talking about!).

On a related note, I recently saw a mobile phone retailer selling the E7 “with the latest version of the OVI operating system”. There’s confused branding if ever there was!

  • Cycnus

Maybe at one time nokia decide to drop nokia brand to move to ovi? :)

  • http://www.cjs.au.com cjschris

I loved the idea of OVI and the brand.
But the service itself was lackluster and was poorly executed.
Hopefully a new name will bring other improvements. But if you’re just chaning the name, you’ve failed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Alex-Jenner/100000662351920 Alex Jenner

One suggestion to save rebranding costs – don’t bother renaming Ovi Suite.
Just return to Nokia PC Suite and add the support for the new phone models to PC Suite.

  • Borys

    I’m alittle confused…

The navigation software was called Nokia Maps on my N82 and previous devices. Then they were rebranded to OVI, and now we come back to Nokia again? Hmmm, and this all in 4 years. It’s quite often for the change of brand, isn’t it?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Otto-Gustafsson/100000609100003 Otto Gustafsson

People did not connect the Ovi brand to Nokia. It is commonly discussed that Nokia is struggling because it still does not have app store for its devices. People do not link Ovi App Store to Nokia.

Nokia App Store, Nokia Maps, Nokia Mail, … Makes sense.

  • Jonay Santana

I like it, but… What would it feels like when someone buys a mobile from othe manufacturer to use Nokia Maps, for example, in a non-Nokia handheld? Seems wierd to me…

The most retarded people work at Nokia!!! I really am happy that Nokia is losing out because some of the decisions they’ve made regarding their branding, to naming of the phones, to jumping off symbian&maemo/meego are just flat out retarded. Then they go into the MS bandwagon which can’t even surpass retardation. Nokia will make it into the guineas book of world records for killing off the biggest market share in mobile within a few years! Good job, OPK/Elop and whoever you are in the top management.      This shows change of focus for Nokia. When they introduced ovi branding, they were conscious to tell us that the Nokia is primarily a hardware company, but we will also provide you the services on par with others. Now the thinking has changed. Nokia senses opportunity, in fact huge one, in the services. Hence now they want to tell us now that Nokia is Hardware as well as Services company. Great way. Google – Android you mean. The others have multiple brands also, iOS, Chrome, Mountain Dew, Fanta, Sprite.

The disconnect with Nokia was not a bad thing if the Ovi services were strong enough to stand on their own two feet. The problem is, they weren’t. They were always tied to just Nokia handsets and they were generally poorer than their competition. The exception was perhaps Maps but that was poorly marketed and Nokia were very late with a web API and to this day it’s next to impossible to integrate it with even Symbian apps.

ie. it’s not the name that needed to change, but the execution.

  • teqboi

Like Symbian and Meego, this is a by-now-well-known-little-deceit-scheme-by-Nokia-Marketing to say that they are abandoning the services as well. A way to go Nokia .. a path to be a mere ODM, albeit with no cost advantage.

It is not a one nught transition as we can imagine…hence I believe there will be gradual shift in namings. Really doubt that ovi.com emails will switch to nokia.com as it is corporate domain. Guts feeling tells me it will be kept for some time as ovi.com for email.

Nokia short sellers love this kind of news! They know that the most people do not realise if this was good or bad news. Short sellers will sell millions of shares short and set the Nokia stock quote to plunge. It is now -1.91% in Helsinki. The evening news will say: “…Stock market did not like the Nokia’s move to abandon the Ovi brand…” This will be common sense tomorrow amongst people. Your value is measured on the stock market.

    Step1) Ovi to Nokia

    Step2) Nokia to Microsoft

Looks like thers a master plan behind this transistion. All this for the
sake of Microsoft, the trojan at its work!

Its not that I hate this Ovi-Nokia transistion, the question is if it
    will remain under Nokia branding.

I would love to see Nokia PC suite, Nokia store, Nokia email/Messaging,
Nokia music store, Nokia maps…etc. Trend looks like the company is
getting dissolved. Nokia email already gone to Yahoo! Nokia music closed
by a trojan. Nokia store will be eaten away by Microsoft. Nokia PC
suite will cease to exist because of WP7 based phones.

The only thing that remains will be Nokia Maps which will be integrated
onto MS based WP7 devices. It will be tough to see Nokia Maps survive
under the monarchy of MS. I am worried about the Nokia branding now!

    1. Google has many products. Android is one of them. The branding is Google. If you look at Google Calendar for example, it’s Google’s name first, then the products’ name. Ditto for Google Search, Google Images, Google Reader etc.

    2. These companies have very strong branding. And always include their name in their products.

    3. Yes. Nokia’s weekness is – execution :-)

The ditching of Ovi is the latest step of Nokia’s takeover by Microsoft. Ovi Maps will become Nokia Maps, or just Maps, and in the near future Bing Maps. Ovi Mail will disappear and will be replaced by Hotmail. Ovi Store will also be replaced by Microsoft Marketplace. That’s the reason why the Ovi branding should go away. Nokia’s services are dead, and Nokia is quickly becomming just another OEM.
    Congratulations Elop…

Vasilis, that is a rather cynical view of the world and ultimately quite wrong.  We are simply re-branding Ovi services back to Nokia.  The purpose of the exercise is to strengthen Nokia, not weaken it.

  • Why Nokia? Why?!

Elop is getting to FAT that Nokia is rapidly sinking into a Microsoft infested waters..

  • Vasilis

You say so because you should say so. But who believes you any more? It is clear that your long-term plan is to shut down all of your services and become fully dependent on Microsoft.

  • Chris G

It will continue to grow and strengthen.  The services are just being re-branded, not stopped.  You’ll soon start to see everything come under the Nokia brand, including the store, PC integration system, email, maps, etc

  • http://twitter.com/IanGertler Ian Gertler

I agree, Phil. While there may certainly be some hidden pieces of the puzzle and they did spend time, money and effort on Ovi, it makes more sense to utilize the stronger brand (which is definitely Nokia). Look at all of the effort and billions spent to re-brand AT&T Wireless as Cingular — and successfully, just to go back to AT&T. Sometimes, you must change plans, even if there is a big partner like Microsoft exerting some influence. But, that’s business. I wish them luck. The better they get, the more they push the others to make better products for all of us … competition is good and spurs innovation. Let’s hope it’s the case here too. Cheers all!

@A Kahn, I disagree with that analogy. Elop and our leadership team are taking an aggressive approach to get our company back on track. He can either be a caretaker of decline make a large bet on the future. The “trojan horse” rumors are not true, when it came to choosing a new strategy for the future, all options and platforms were explored in detail. When it comes to our future services approach, it makes sense to simplify our offering under one brand that already has high-value when it comes to mobile experiences, and that is the Nokia brand. I honestly believe we need to take bold and risky moves and that is what is going on. I hope you give it a chance, and I look forward to continuing the conversation.

  • Chris G

more likely that existing email accounts wil stay as ovi.com and new users will sign up to a new email domain that is nokia-related.  No-one wants to inconvenience our consumers by making changes that are not necessary and unduly disruptive.

  • Chris G

Does it feel weird when you use Google maps on a non-android phone..?  I think the point here is that if Nokia Maps is a world-class maps & navigation application, everyone who wants to use it should be able to – regardless of what phone they use.  And Nokia will be a lot more focused on bringing their brand name to the fore in the services domain.

  • Chris G

Nope, they didn’t.  That would be silly when you have the 8th biggest brand in the world.

But yes, there was confusion and all your points are perfectly valid.  Now hopefully it will be a lot clearer for everyone.

This is a bad decision for some of Ovi services (Ovi store has became a well known brand name) and i think there need to be a unique app store name like android has Market, blackberry has appworld, apple has app store (this example is a bit different) so Nokia has Ovi store and they’ve invested so much in letting ppl know to download from Ovi and Ovi store so change to Nokia Store is wrong i think and will hurt both nokia and publisher on Ovi with users being cnofused and we’ll see less traffic & sales of apps.

  • http://www.nokia.com ShaneatNokia

@huk123 correct, Store has grown to 5M daily downloads and continues on a path of momentum globally. It’s important to remember this is a change in our brand only and our services continue. Our success with the Ovi Store and our relationships with developers will remain absolutely crucial going forward. Our goal is to leverage what we have learned to continue to deliver great mobile experiences while we shore up the future potential of what our new strategy can deliver — under the powerful masterbrand of Nokia — there is lots to be excited about. Let’s keep talking.

  • http://www.nokia.com ShaneatNokia

@huk123 actually, this is about consistency more than anything! The Nokia masterbrand is associated with premium mobile experiences around the globe, and by leveraging the value from it we plan to make it easier for consumers to use our services. Nokia Mosh was used by millions and we channeled those learnings into the Ovi Store. A Nokia-branded application store that leverages the Windows MP infrastructure will be a huge part of our new ecosystem. This evolution is ongoing, and simplifying the brand at the center will make it easier to make good on our plans.

The company is transitioning from Ovi to Nokia to centralize its offerings under one brand. The services and apps should still continue on with the same functionality and utility, just that it will be now a Nokia brand, rather than an Ovi brand. Nokia says: The reasons for this decision includes the fact that Nokia is a well-known and highly-loved brand the world over. Our mobile experiences are tightly integrated with our devices – there is no longer a differentiation. For example, if consumers want the best mobile navigation experience, they know it’s a Nokia that they can rely on. The team is well aware of these discrepancies. This brand change is a huge project and as it takes effect there will be Ovi in some places and Nokia in others. But what’s important to reiterate is that we will make it easy and seamless for our consumers. That is the overwhelming mandate, because getting that right will be a good first step towards the innovative mobile experiences to come.

Maybe HTC, Samsung, etc. won’t want Nokia Maps on their phone; in my opinion, they shouldn’t get the priviledge, at least not without paying a premium to get the services included.  Or, if anyone buying a HTC, Samsung, etc device wish to have Nokia Maps on their Windows Phone, they need to pay extra money for Nokia services.

  • Raman

Vasilis, depending on microsoft is probably the only way out for nokia at this point of time. by reducing the cost of services like ovi, nokia will be able to concentrate on better handsets like they have done in the past. remember nokia revolutionised the way ppl think about mobile phones. unfortunately ppl dont consider the make of the handset any more its only about the o.s wars. the newer the better, so hope nokia comes with something new altogether and takes the market by storm.

good. a centralized single point is better than some fancy name. I never understood the Ovi brand move. Nokia was good enough. I doubt if people equated Ovi with Nokia, ever. It’s about time Nokia made some rapid moves, burning bridge indeed.

nokia engineering has always been fine, their hardware has been first rate. however, I would however love to see some mid and top level management fired over the collossal failure to read the market. now, some hapless foot soldiers – the symbian programmers lose out, while the blame lies squarely with the marketing/ business decision makers.

Nokiamail it should be. why move to hotmail if their primary intention is branding ?

  • APai

yeah sure. but post WP7, they’d better remain unqiue and not too mollycoddled by microsoft. as of now, microsoft’s market is nascent and at best they have very poor brand recall value in mobility (whatever their marketing spiel is – blackberry owns the business space, apple and android are ruling the consumer roost, if microsoft claims they have a good recall – they are smoking crappy weed).

nokia should brand themselves as a strong independent company that does not require any crutches.

  • APai

meego still sounds like a good fallback. I don’t really see microsoft as a king in the mobility sector. they are the kings in the desktop market, but, tey are this lumbering, trundling giant, like a large goofy rich kid, who has very poor skills, what he lacks with skills – he makes up with money.

  • PMaff

    What about the “older” phones?
    Symbian?
Or not so old phones like those with Maemo 5?

    Will they get these updates?
Or only the newer WP7 phones? :-(

  • PMaff

Nokia made a big mistake in dropping Maemo and Meego but I know that this is a different topic.

  • PMaff

Nokia: You have one of the best OSes: Maemo and a kind of successor: MeeGo.

Just use it and you are unique!

The N900 was the best smartphone I’ve ever seen and it needed only a simple
tweak to make it usable for more people who are not used to xterm and alike.

WP7 is a dead end street.

@Vasilis the heavy lifting that has gone into 220 million people activating services, 5M daily downloads from Store, an integrated maps offering that works in 100 countries…these great experiences cannot be abandoned. The opportunity is to leverage the best of what Nokia has built with the properties and expertise of MS, and create a truly compelling consumer and partner proposition.

  • PMaff

How long does Nokia try to move on that street until it realizes that it is
    a dead end street? ;-)

    5 month?
    1 year? ;-)

  • http://www.nokia.com ShaneatNokia

The plan is for anyone holding a Nokia phone to see the new branding through future software updates. It’s a significant project, but the goal is to make it seamless for consumer planned for completion by the end of next year.

  • http://www.nokia.com ShaneatNokia

Hi, just to clarify, re our maps. Our mapping, navigation and certain location-based services will be central to the WindowsPhone ecosystem, available to players in that ecosystem as an innovative offering powering great contextual experiences. We will be the engine driving “real world” experiences, while Bing will help people “get around in the virtual one,” contributing search across the device portfolio. We are looking at ways Nokia and MS can complement each other in this new ecosystem, and we’ll share more when we have it.

  • APai

while I do agree that Nokia is a masterbrand, why then the move towards Ovi earlier? on its own ovi has done well. but as a sub brand for Nokia I do not think its got good synergies for both of them as a team. besides – if you see apple/ google – they do not have a sub- brand, they have a “market ” or an “app store” not another brand. no services under its belt. the confusion will continue as people finally have come to terms that ovi=nokia.

while we all get that ovi is a sub brand under nokia – we still tend to take time to accept a new brand rightaway. we always have a few seasons before we/ the market accepts the new brand. now, with Nokia having all at stake it does make sense to invest in a single brand – yet the simple contradiction is that some more confusion is in store for the consumers.

  • APai

“so hope nokia comes with something new altogether and takes the market by storm.”

lets all hope that happens. you know for that part to happen there should be a proper leadership at the top. so far I see only the bottom rung symbian employees laid off. I’d like to see a lot of mid level managers/ marketing people in particular fired for not seeing the tide shifting 3-5 years back when they were laughing at iphone/ apple.

nokia is also guilty like sony ericsson of creating a hundred models basically of the same stupid hardware. same guts different shells – like we have c7/e7/ n8 etc – almost identical but for one or two components here and there. i used to hate the times in 2003-2005 – nokia had great opportunity, but they ended up making some really stupid phones and in good number of models – they stopped innovating then and there.

so much energy wasted in supporting/ creating all those phones with so little actual variety. they still continue to do it. apple has ONE phone and they do a pretty decent job of it – I do like E7/ E6/ N8 – the rest of them seem to be the same damn thing wrapped differently

  • APai

It’s available only on Reliance network. but since the apps are available at a fabulous discount , I guess Nokia is trying hard to bring level playing field with other service providers. but the issue is of inceompetence @ Nokia – You always make sure of such agreements before hand, and not let the consumer stranded for 2 months to wait to buy an app. one paid app. Nokia – you really blew it at the most opportune moment. i see the customer service people squirm and agree apple/ android to be a better choice. I’d shudder to think that would have happened 3 years back when practically Nokia was THE brand people took for granted when it came to mobility. now, Nokia has botched up that unique space in india. the 2 month downtime is a massive goofup.

  • http://www.nokia.com ShaneatNokia

@Apai  good questions that we could honestly discuss at length over a 9-course dinner (this time in the afternoon my thoughts turn to food sorry.)

When Ovi was created the paradign was different. The “walled garden” for services was hot. Devices and experiences were not integrated like they are today. Operators and OEMs alike created separate offerings with intent to bring the masses into exciting new experiences. Apps and devices were like church and state.

Ovi came from modest beginnings. You downloaded a song, you used the maps, etc. But then those services started to talk to each other (maps served up content, apps  connected to music.) As they did, they became part of the device experiences, and with that, part of the NOKIA experience. As a result, Nokia became associated with stellar experiences generated in the Ovi portfolio.

Delivering on our long term strategy means unifying our brand architecture under the master brand of Nokia, which is a devices and experiences brand now. Simplifying it to be NOKIA helps make it easier for consumers to enjoy them — and easier for us to deliver next generation disruptive technologies on an aggressive timeline.

  • Vasilis

“…by reducing the cost of services like ovi, nokia will be able to concentrate on better handsets like they have done in the past”

We are saying exactly the same thing. Nokia is becoming an OEM, just a handset manufacturer like so many others.

The plan behind that? Perhaps, Shane, you aren´t looking into the future far enough…

Perhaps its a bit easier for Micro$oft not to use the ovi branding…now they only have to rearange their own software with the new NOKIA branding. I usually despise Eldar Murtazins claims and rants about NOKIA but all this (latest claims today about NOKIA being swallowed by Micro$oft) make sense:

    ELOP the Trojan as CEO
    total WindowsPhone strategy
    ditching symbian and Meego
dividing the company into a “mobile division” and divisions for the “glorius” rest
    Rebranding of ovi to nokia

I definetely WON´T buy any Nokia device from Microkia.

@Cloud it’s not that complicated, it’s easier to have one brand in this experience, not two. The integrated services offered on Nokia devices have helped connect the master brand with great experiences. Keeping it simple in the new experience will keep it simple for consumers to understand and keep it compelling for partners to be a part of it.

As for Eldar’s tweet, we typically don’t comment on rumors or speculation but c’mon! If he keeps going that route he’ll be tweeting that the moon landing was faked and Elvis is performing in a karaoke bar in Helsinki J

Jorma Ollila will retire next year and wants a huge pension check selling Nokia to Microsoft.
    Now it is clear.
Former CEO Jorma Ollila just hires a Microsoft executive, S. Elop, and puts him in charge of selling everything to M$, but first Elop has to burn the development platforms and services, kill Maemo/Meego, kill Symbian, kill Qt, kill Ovi. And giving maps to Microsoft for one billion, when M$ spent 8 billion on Skype. With 30 billion M$ can easy buy Nokia. Good deal for M$ and Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila and all the top executives. Top executives get a big check with many zeros from selling Nokia and live happily ever-after

CEO Elop Ex-Microsoft made a “brave” decision to push everybody at Nokia to jump from his so-called “burning platform”: 7000 people got FIRED! Yes, 7000 hi-tech developers, the BRAIN at Nokia in OS-es and Development, got fired! That’s the burning Elop, the “I am Not-a Trojan Horse” who spits FIRE to Nokians and Europeans!

    1. People bought Nokia smartphones because they were NOT FENCED and NOT CLOSED unlike the walled gardens iOS and WP7. Ovi services could be used directly from the phone. What will happen with my photos on Ovi Share??? In other walled gardens people need to use a computer to do anything from transfer images, videos, music to updates in the Microsoft and Apple worlds? Because Apple and MS want to squeeze you and extort you for every last cent of your money. They want you to be a slave in their closed garden, using only the things that they want to feed you. Nokia fans were and are smart. They didn’t want to be slaves of a closed and fenced system. They wanted an open eco-system which only Symbian and Maemo / Meego could offer.

    2. Nokia’s MAEMO 6 / MeeGo were really a better product than Android, ready to take on the world when Mr. Elop just fired the MeeGo team along with Symbian team. How crazy is to kill and bury 6 years of Maemo development, Maemo was even before first iPod Touch / iPhone appeared!

    3. Qt Quick is 70% easier than C++ or C# applications. So Nokia had one of the best development IDE in the world with Qt 4.7 and Qt Quick based on Javascript. Again, Elop just killed it because he wants to sell Microsoft products.

    4. First place in smarthphones (before Elop landed at Nokia), people were OK with SYMBIAN^3 and many people really liked Symbian^3 and most of the people like now “Symbian Anna”. If you want to shoot yourself in the leg, or you don’t care because you have a hidden agenda and are gaining money from M$ (and are a Trojan), you declare Symbian dead, while it is still the first smartphone OS. Then all the sales reps from all the carriers cannot recommend to anybody a Nokia Symbian^3 phone because they know Symbian was killed. What’s next? MS will buy for nothing in 2 years a broken Nokia?

    5. Many people liked Symbian and Maemo was a rising star. Many people like Android as well and if they will move to another device brand they want to keep their investment in apps, so most likely they will chose an Android again. Why didn’t Nokia use Android as well, besides continuing to use much improved Symbian-Anna and Maemo / Meego?
What has WP7 in plus compared to Symbian, Maemo 6 / MeeGo and Android? It only had less?

    * We are really disappointed in the management of Nokia who sold their soul, their innovation, their high-tech best brainiacs to M$.

I totally agree with you that it´s simplier with one brand, NOKIA services in this case. And it´s a good move – personally I don´t bother that the OVI brand is going if the quality of the services doesn´t get worse.

Concerning Eldar: this guy had some good information about the past moves of NOKIA so I´m not sure what to think – time will tell. I would hate to see the last european (mobile) technology giant becoming a mobile division of M$.

I mean this must be the  final alternative, and if you guys fail here (just like you guys did with N-Gage, Mosh, Download!, etc), I guess you’ll just complete the picture as being a TOTAL FAILURE with nowhere else to turn.      Well, if we’re all being honest here, then Nokia really has been dying since around 2007-2008 with the introduction of the first iPhone and later, Android.

They’re no different than companies like Sun Microsystems, Commodore or Atari: tech companies that were blind-sided by changing tastes and technologies and failed to transition and heaped upon the dustbin of history.

On the positive side, twenty years from now, hipsters may go around wearing ironic ‘Nokia’ brand t-shirts.

[...] The evolution of Nokia and Ovi Evolution is synonymous with change, and that’s exactly what’s going to happen with Ovi. It’ll undergo a make-over, and the first thing officially out the door is the Ovi name. It’ll be relaunched and simply known as Nokia services, but essentially, it’ll still be the same Ovi Nokia fan boys have become accustomed with. The “evolution” will kick off in July with a completion date set by end of 2012. The name change may seem a bit trivial, but for a company who’s trying to stay competitive in the mobile phone biz, this might just be what they need for a fresh new start. Nokia Conversations [...]

It’s a rebranding — this in itself has no impact on the average Nokia user, so pipe down in the back there!

What’s I’d much rather see is  better Oki/Nokia synch software. I used Nokia PC Suite and had lots of problems – it would claim the phone was out of memory when it had gobs of megs left. I was urged (pushed) into “upgrading” to Ovi – which was even worse, more error prone, failed more often, and still couldn’t finish synching because it could not accurately read the amount of RAM on my phone. I went back to PC Suite. At NO POINT did the support site address my problems of those of the dozens of others with the same problem, dating back two years.

I am simply waiting until my contract lets me buy another phone — which will not, ever again, be a Nokia.

Thanks for the ride. It’s been.

  • http://www.tabletmac.net/technology-news/nokia-rebranding-ovi-to-nokia-services/ Nokia Rebranding Ovi to Nokia Services | Tablet Android 2011

[...] Nokia will be re-branding its Ovi Store, Ovi Maps, and other Ovi Messaging, and other services to bearing the Nokia brand, rather than Ovi. These last few years, and moving forward, our mission remains unchanged: we will continue our work to deliver compelling, unified mobile service offerings and next-generation, disruptive technologies. Dear Shaun :-) ,

    1. Android was not originally developed by Google. It was first developed by Andy Rubin & Co. Then Google bought Android Inc. The rest is history :-) .

    2. Ditto for Youtube. Chad Hurley and his friends created Youtube. Then Google bought them. At that time, Google already has it’s own video service called Google Video. Over the years, Youtube grows very strong that Google decided to close Google Video.

    3. Youtube and Android are not rebranded to include Google’s master brand because both are very strong already.

    4. IMHO, at the time the decision was made, Nokia wanted to separate it’s internet services from it’s hardware. But the execution was poor. One by one, Ovi services failed to attract market. Only Ovi Store and Ovi Maps are familiar to the users.

    5. WHatever they do, Nokia need to execute better this time, and faaassstttt!

    Peace!

What will happen to my Ovi Mail? Would it be called Nokia Mail and will change the domain from @ovi.com to @nokia.com?

  • Lova Linacio

I think, Stephen Elop should step down.

First, he dumped Symbian and backfired Intel by making MeeGo dead on arrival.
Second, he used Windows Phone instead of Android.
Third, he said Nokia’s not making a tablet — probably the Z500 won’t be launched.
Fourth, he changed Nokia Sans to Nokia Pure — which is reminiscent to the one being used in Windows Phone & Microsoft’s products.
    Fifth, he’s killing Ovi.
Sixth, he changed Nokia’s executive division to Nokia Leadership Team.
Seventh, he gave Symbian to Accenture.
Eighth, he’s selling Nokia to Microsoft.

Alright Nokia, don’t lie anymore. Stephen Elop is going to sell the company — and Microsoft will destroy you, losing customers, until your value cheapens — so they will simply acquire you. SAD but TRUE. Mark my words. Elopocalypse is coming — I mean, happening.

Instead of wasting resources on rebranding, Nokia would much rather finally replace the awful, unstable, ckunky behemoth that is Ovi-Suite with something that actually works reliably.

The current version can’t even sychronize music because Nokia couldn’t make that feature work. So they removed it and now you have to transfer playlists manually after making changes on the PC. How sad and pathetic and utterly backwards

Why not be honest and cal a spade a spade?

This is the re-rebrand of a failed rebrand.

Nokia rebranded all their services to OVI to give themselves a hipper image and possibly detract from awful hardware like the truly pathetic N97 (worst phone I have ever owned in almost 20 years).

That didn’t really work, all we’ve got from it was this awful, unstable clunky piece of %&/* called Ovi Suite, so it’s back to Nokia.

Btw, you are using alomst exactly the same wording that was used to justify the rebranding from Nokia to OVI. Ironic, I think. and a little sad.

It is very sad to see my once favorite mobile phone brand go, but IMHO it is definitely going.

  • Lova Linacio

Maybe they will now sell ‘tangible’ apps. lol

So if Nokia is acquired by Microsoft what will be the state of Existing Symbian users. It seems we are reading more news like this for the past 6 months so what will happen to Nokia and their existing customer future. And also in some blog they mentioned Nokia stepped out the partnership with the Linux foundation. So is it possible to see the MeeGo device. Or LG will be the the one to produce the MeeGo devices. is the future of the World leading OS Symbian era is over. Really sad about Symbian which OS i loved

  • http://www.facebook.com/swisskiltbear Max Schmitt

Well, if that is true, please imrpove your handsets, the N97 is a nightmare and so was the 6280. These two handsets may have spoiled the Nokia brand for me for a long time. The back cover is almost coming off my N97 because I have to frewuently take the battery out to force a restart.

Then ditch and rewrite awful clunky, HUGE, unstable Ovi-Suite, probably the worst desktop software for any smart phone or PDA.

These days Ovi-Suite cannot even syc music anymore. The xouldn’t make the feature work so they just dropped it and now we have to copy music manually, how utterly backwards.

Don’t waste resources on rebrands, use them to siginifcantly improve your hardware and software.

  • Lova Linacio

Isn’t the Moon landing fake, because the hammer just fell on the ground? Talk about ZERO GRAVITY, Shane. :-) They have the video. I believe that Stephen Elop saying, “I am not a Trojan Horse” is some kind of a bullshhh. Of course he won’t admit, since he’s got a hidden agenda. if you really love nokia, you would take steps to protect Finland, Europe & the World’s most valuable Cellular company, NOKIA. And the world’s oldest & still existent smartphone OS in the world, SYMBIAN.

  • http://www.facebook.com/swisskiltbear Max Schmitt

I really am afraid that WP7 might be the final nail in Nokia’s coffin. After having seen a few good ‘droids and the fruit phone, I am definitely very underwhelmed by WP7.

It’s a bit less idiosyncratic to use than previous WP versions, but ‘Droid and iOS still beat it hands down on usabilty, I’m afraid.

@SG I would like to remind you that we are committed to delivering millions of Symbian phones in the pipeline and great value for consumers. This summer’s updates include a new home screen, new icons, a faster browser, new Navbar and a fresh look and feel to for store and navigation offerings, including integration of social media services in maps. It’s true that we are moving to the WP platform and have an aggressive timeline to deliver that by 2012, but we will not abandon Symbian users or developers. Our intent is to evolve and improve the experience and bring them into the new benefits of our ecosystem. We would like for users ending the natural lifecycle of their Symbian device to see the benefits of coming to a Nokia Windows Phone device, and we want to work with all users of our products to make that experience the best one possible.

  • http://www.nokia.com ShaneatNokia

@Harvey, chat and mail are now powered by Yahoo, which bring great new functionalities to the services. For example on the chat side, chat consumers can now access chat from the web for the first time as well as invite Yahoo! Messenger friends and Chat friends to communicate in real-time and join their Friends list. Mail consumers now have access to tabbed browsing to manage multiple emails at once, a preview pane for incoming emails, better spam filters, mail-to-SMS in several countries, and deeper social integration. I suggest you try it at mail.ovi.com and let us know what you think

  • http://www.nokia.com ShaneatNokia

@Lova you are obviously up on your news but I would like to clarify a few things.First, Symbian is still a major commitment for us as there are millions of devices in the pipeline and new innovations coming as soon as this summer. We can’t just “dump” those users as they are important to help us transition to the new ecosystem and leverage what we have learned along the way. Secondly, we are not “killing” Ovi, we are renaming the brand to reflect the higher value Nokia master brand, which has a powerful connection to premium mobile experiences (like navigation and content.) Our intent in with the new strategy is to deliver the best of both worlds – premium assets, talent and learnings from both sides – to create compelling products and services. We are working hard to change our mindset to deliver and execute on this potential.
