Registration is now open for Qt Developer Days 2011!

Munich hosts the first event, October 24-26, followed by San Francisco, November 29 – December 1. We also plan for regional events in Beijing and Tokyo in December – more details and cities to come.

In the last weeks, positive news about the future of Qt have been released:

Nokia is committed to Qt, and being a skilled and certified Qt developer offers additional opportunities for you now and in the years to come.

Qt Developer Days is also very much about all industries’ use of Qt and is the key place to learn about Qt and meet other Qt enthusiasts. The use of Qt is moving full steam ahead and the successful use of Qt in various types of desktop and embedded projects in multiple industries continues.

Already at Qt Developer Days last year we noticed a strong interest in embedded Linux developments with a focus on more advanced Qt based GUIs. I expect this trend will continue. With the inclusion of Qt in Ubuntu 11.10, Qt Developer Days will also be interesting to Ubuntu app and device UI developers in addition to those developers using Qt shipped in other open source Linux distro’s such as Debian, Fedora, Mandriva (in Brazil), openSUSE, Red Flag (in China), Red Hat as well as ALT (in Russia) to mention a few.

This year’s Qt Developer Days will cover current and future use of Qt including Qt 5, next generation of Qt Quick, and of course the stunning new Qt-powered Nokia N9.

Naturally, Qt Developer Days 2011 offers:

  • Time with experienced Qt engineers and Qt partners to answer your head-scratching development issues for Qt on desktop, embedded and mobile
  • Qt Training day to get up-to-speed with Qt, quickly
  • 50+ technical sessions
  • Qt-in-use case study sessions
  • Partner and Qt Ambassador exhibition with Qt apps and Qt-powered devices
Register now to enjoy early bird, bring a colleague and other group discounts.

I am looking forward to seeing you at the events!

Digia delivers open source version of Qt 4.6.4

by Aron Kozak on July 8, 2011

A few weeks ago we saw Digia release an update to the Qt 4.6 series, introducing Qt 4.6.4 for commercial customers. Digia has contributed this release to Nokia and Nokia has now released Qt 4.6.4 under the LGPL. You can get the binary packages on the usual Qt downloads page, or you can get the source from Gitorious.

Read their blog post for an overview of what Qt 4.6.4 includes.

Qt Meetups Everywhere

by Alexandra Leisse on June 30, 2011

I’ve always been a great fan of mini-conferences, code sprints or other kinds of gatherings around a certain topic or activity (maybe apart from dugnads but that’s another story). It’s nice to meet others who share our interests and have a chat in relaxed surroundings. There is a lot to learn and maybe even some friends to make.

And it’s fun, obviously. Even more so if it involves food…

We were looking for a way we could help make it easy for Qt people to organize their own Qt-related gatherings in their part in the world. Our groups and forums were an option, however the audience is limited. Consequently, I went out to find a proper online solution.

Enter Qt Everywhere Meetups

The idea of Qt Everywhere Meetups is to make it easy for people in the Qt community to find each other and then arrange social things so they can meet, chat and catch up about Qt stuff.

Anyone can easily join or start a Qt Meetup by looking for an existing group nearby and joining their meetup, or simply by setting up a new local group and arranging something.

A Qt Meetup can range from three people meeting over a beer to a BBQ in the park that involves whole families, to a fully-fledged seminar-like evening, with sponsored food and drink. Anything goes; it’s up to you.

To get the ball rolling, I set up a first global Meetup-Day on July 15th.

Some of our Ambassadors have started groups in their areas already and they’re ready for you to join.

And wouldn’t it be nice to repeat these meetings on a regular basis? I surely think so.

PS Tell us if you are arranging something, we might be able to help. And we love hearing about Qt people meeting each other, so don’t be afraid to tell us and the world all about your meetup, upload photos to Flickr, tweet or blog about it etc. We’re really curious!

The biggest Qt event on the planet is back, and we’re pleased to announce that pre-registration for Qt Developer Days Munich and San Francisco 2011 is now open.

Qt Developer Days is the best place to learn, share, and build your Qt expertise and network. It’s the place to speak with and learn from the people who make Qt, and every year the event grows in terms of participation numbers and attendee satisfaction. At both locations we will have the tech tracks, keynotes, Qt in use sessions and add-ons that makes Developer Days so valuable.

At this year’s Qt Developer Days we will also have special sessions for developers that want to target Nokia Symbian phones and/or the new Nokia N9 based on MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan.

Munich will play host to our first Developer Days event this year, running from October 24-26. Last year over 1000 developers, CTOs, product managers, educators and “Trolls” gathered to take in tech sessions, training, Qt in use sessions among much else.

San Francisco Developer Days is the biggest Qt event in North America, and we’re planning for November 29 to December 1.

Pre-register now to secure your spot for this year.

Pre-registered attendees receive:

  • A guaranteed place at the event – nice to know given attendee numbers have more than doubled in the last two years.
  • You will be entered in a drawing to win a Nokia N9
  • First opportunity to take advantage of any potential price promotions such as early bird prices

Following the strong success of last week’s Qt Contributor Summit and Qt 5 we will continue some of the sessions that were held there during the first day of each event.

Other Qt Events:

We’re pleased to announce that we will hold Qt Developer events in China, Taipei and Japan this December. Pre-registration is not available for these events, but stay tuned for more information on when and how to get involved.

We are already looking forward to seeing many of you there this year.

Exciting news for the Qt community today: this morning Nokia confirmed that Qt will be a core component in the Nokia strategy to bring apps to the next billion, reassuring developers that investments made in Qt today can live on in the future with Nokia.

This will mean mobile Qt developers can benefit from the strong momentum Qt apps have on the Ovi store (with over 100 million Nokia Qt-enabled Symbian devices around the world) as well as to continue to have a large addressable target audience in the future.

Other great news for Qt developers: The exciting new Qt-powered Nokia N9 device running Linux (MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan) was announced today, providing more opportunities for Qt app developers in 2011 – Experimental MeeGo Harmattan 1.2 target added to the Qt SDK.

Qt’s momentum has been growing dramatically over the past few months:

  • In May we saw record number of Qt downloads! The use and interest of Qt has never been higher
  • Major upgrade to the Qt documentation, making Qt easier to use. Public testing on-going at the Qt Developer Network
  • Last weeks successful Qt contributor Summit and progress of the Qt 5 project
  • Qt Developer Days pre-registration will open up for Munich and San Francisco – today. Qt Developer events are also scheduled for China, Taipei and Tokyo in December, stay tuned for more information.
  • Cooperation with Digia is bearing fruit. Digia is going to make Qt 4.6.4 available also for open source developers in the coming weeks.

So by now having a clearer understanding of why Nokia continues to invest in Qt, the short- and long-term opportunities for developers using Qt increase. A big thank you to our Qt community including Digia for helping to ensure Qt becomes better and continues to grow!

The new Nokia N9

The new Nokia N9

At Nokia Connections event in Singapore the new Qt-powered Nokia N9 was announced. This new Linux device features a completely new user interface where navigating is done with a simple swipe of the finger. The Nokia N9 runs MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan and means that Qt-based apps can be ported to run on this new device.

In combination with the Nokia N9 announcement, we have just released an update to the Qt SDK to get feedback and to improve the experimental MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan target for the up-coming Nokia N9.

The experimental MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan target within the Qt SDK includes limited and experimental functionality and is a starting point for developers that want to create Qt apps for Ovi store. For more details on this SDK update, please see the release blog on Qt Labs and get your packages in the usual spot.

Happy hacking!
