Arris has announced that the broadband gear vendor has struck a deal to acquire video hardware vendor BigBand Networks in a deal worth $172 million, or $53 million net of estimated BigBand cash on hand. BigBand gives Arris a leg up in the switched digital video (SDV) market, technology which helps cable operators free up spectrum by holding unwatched channels at the edge router. "We are both enthusiastic and optimistic about the BigBand acquisition because it builds on our stated business strategy of growing our current businesses into a more complete portfolio including a strong video product suite and investing in the evolution towards network convergence onto an all IP platform," Arris CEO Bob Stanzione said in a prepared statement. "We are delighted to welcome the BigBand employees to ARRIS."
