Fujifilm X-S1 has a 26x optical zoom

Fujifilm X-S1 has a 26x optical zoom

There's a new bridge camera in town and its name is the Fujifilm X-S1. And good news if you want to capture snaps from afar, as it's packing a quite ridiculous 26x optical zoom.

The X-S1 is the third in Fujifilm's X series, joining the X100 and X10. It's the bulkiest of the three, sitting midway between the other two offerings, and from the looks of things, it should give other bridge cameras a run for their money. Continue reading...

Nikon D800 36-megapixel DSLR leaks into view

Nikon D800 36-megapixel DSLR leaks into view

It’s been rumoured since last month that Nikon is close to releasing a new high-end DSLR called the D800, and now we may have got our first glimpse of the beast.

Dug up by the appropriately-named Nikon Rumors, two photos show what could well be the D800 in all its glory. It looks fairly similar to the current Nikon D700 (which it’ll likely be replacing) but there are enough differences to suggest that these shots are indeed genuine and not merely the work of a Photoshop user with too much time on his or her hands. Biographer: Steve Jobs reinventing TV, cameras and textbooks

Walter Isaacson, writer of the recently released biography of Steve Jobs, has revealed that the late Apple supremo was working on 'reinventing' three key areas of technology: television, photography and textbooks.

And despite the famed secrecy surrounding the development of Apple products, it seems Jobs may have been uncharacteristically candid with Isaacson -- although we shouldn't expect the writer to reveal any of the details he discovered. Continue reading...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 shoots two things at the same time

Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 shoots two things at the same time

Panasonic is heading for the next dimension. Its latest piece of 3D kit is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1, a compact camera that can not only shoot tri-dee photos and videos, it can record two different things at the same time.

The Lumix 3D1 packs not one but two 25mm wide-angle lenses. When you're shooting 3D, each lens records a slightly different image and combines the two to form a 3D picture or video, mimicking the effect of your two eyes. You can then watch the 3D footage on a Panasonic Viera 3D TV, or any other 3D telly. Continue reading...

Nikon 1 J1 and 1 V1 debut new lens-swapping system

Nikon has waded into the lens-swapping game with the new Nikon 1 system. Two new cameras, the Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 J1, throw out the traditional camera rulebook for a new system of interchangeable lenses.

Nikon 1 is the name of the new lens format, and the J1 and V1 are the first in the range. They're compact cameras that do away with the moving mirror found in a traditional dSLR, giving you the ability to swap lenses like a dSLR but in a much smaller body. Continue reading...

Samsung NX200 supersizes your snaps

Samsung NX200 supersizes your snaps

The NX200 is the follow up to the NX100, and is Samsung's third compact-sized camera with interchangeable lenses. It's aiming to compete with the Micro Four Thirds gang and its ilk, such as the Olympus Pen Lite E-PL3, Panasonic's DMC-GF3 and Sony's NEX-7, so you'd be right in thinking it's got its work cut out.

The big selling point is the 20.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. Samsung notes that's "more than any product offered in the market". Well, maybe it should take a look at the Sony NEX-7, announced last week, as that packs in a whopping 24.3-megapixels. Though 20.3 is still a vast great number, giving you prints far bigger than you're likely to need. Unless you're aiming to make a bedspread out of them. Continue reading...

Panasonic DMC-FZ150 is a 24x snapper

Panasonic DMC-FZ150 is a 24x snapper

Panasonic's got a brand-new toy with a 24x zoom -- the Panasonic DMC-FZ150 is a superzoomin' snapper with Full HD video capture, perfect for snooping on neighbours, or capturing photos of elusive rare birds.

Design-wise, the FZ150 is near-identical to the FZ100, a camera we awarded three and a half stars in our review back in September. That's not a terrible score, but we're hoping the FZ150 can fare a little better. Continue reading...

Fujifilm FinePix F600 EXR shows you the way with augmented reality GPS

Fujifilm FinePix F600 EXR shows you the way with augmented reality GPS

There are three grim inevitabilities about holidays: sunburn, foreigners, and never knowing where anything is. We can't help with the first two, but the new Fujifilm FinePix F600 EXR compact superzoom can take care of the last one.

The F600 includes GPS to tag your snaps with a location which can be plotted on a map of your holibobs, and borrows a technology from the mobile phone: augmented reality. The augmented reality landmark navigator automatically locates places of interest from a built-in database of around 1 million locations, and shows you where they are and how far away they are, right on your camera's 3-inch screen. ESA's Gaia camera packs one billion pixels, maps entire Milky Way in 3D

ESA's Gaia camera packs one billion pixels, maps entire Milky Way in 3D

How big is the image sensor on your camera? Five megapixels? Eight? 16? It hardly matters, because the European Space Agency is about to make you feel very inadequate. It's just flopped out a '1 billion pixel' (that's, one thousand megapixels) imaging device known as Gaia, which will map the Milky Way galaxy in 3D.

One billion pixels is actually a tiny bit of an understatement. Gaia's surface combines 106 credit card-sized charged coupled devices (CCDs), each the thickness of a human hair. The CCDs, which are effectively 'miniature' cameras in their own right, feature 4,500 pixels in the 'along scan' direction and 1,966 pixels for 'across scan', providing an overall total of around 8,847,000 pixels per CCD. Multiply that by 160 and you have a giant CCD consisting of 1 billion, 415 million, 520 thousand pixels. Zoinks! Continue reading...

Pentax Q is latest lens-swapping system

It may not fire lasers or whistle up a dose of stun gas, but the new Pentax Q interchangeable-lens camera has a very James Bond-esque retro style -- and a crazy pop-up flash. Pay attention, 007.

The Pentax Q camera is the first to use the new Q lens mount, announced today. It's the first step for Pentax into the ever-growing market for cameras that swap lenses like a digital SLR, but in a much smaller frame. Continue reading...
