I joined Marc Farley, Matthew Brender, and Sean Thulin in the launch of a new
online radio show called Run! last week. The first broadcast has now been
posted.
Marc is a storage-industry veteran and author of Building Storage Networks,
the industry's Bible. He was a key figure in the startups EqualLogic
(acquired by Dell), and 3Par (acquired by HP). He now works for StorSimple.
Matt and Sean are two terrific young engineers with EMC, involved with social
media and cloud storage, respectively.
Run! 1 covered privacy (and the lack thereof) and emerging careers in social
media. I was accused of being a little Ron Paul-ish (not true) and
fire-and-brimstonesque (probably true) by my fellow participants, but I think
I held my own with this brainy crew. Check it out.

Last year saw some of the biggest security breaches to date, and some large
organizations feeling the heat. Anonymous and LulzSec made their presence
known, taking on a large number targets. RSA suffered a massive breach,
inadvertently putting the security of its many customers in jeopardy. The
Sony Playstation Network had to be shut down following a breach. Even Apple
cracked under an attack from malware writers.
Whether this year will be as eventful remains to be seen but what we can
predict is cybercriminals will continue to look to profit from their illicit
activities, albei... (more)

As corporations across all industries globally are struggling with how to retain, aggregate and analyze this mounting volume of what the industry refers to as Big Data, it also provides a unique opportunity for innovative startups that recognize the business prospects Big Data presents. Big Data is not just unlocking new information but new sources of economic and business value.
Interactivity is driving Big Data, with people and machines both consuming and creating it. Digital companies focused on becoming good at aggregating and analyzing the data created by the end users of their product, who then provide their customers with solid insights taken from that data are at a distinct competitive advantage over others in the marketplace. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc.
Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
