Unisys Sponsors Harrisburg University Security Center of Excellence to Help PA State and Local Governments Protect Data

Jan 15, 2015

Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced its sponsorship of the Security Center of Excellence at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology to promote ways to protect government data and systems from hackers and other unauthorized access.

Established by the Harrisburg University and its Government Technology Institute (GTI), the new center is believed to be the first of its kind focused exclusively on securing data entrusted to state, county and local governments. As a founding member of the Security Center of Excellence, as well as the GTI, Unisys will collaborate with the university on education programs and developing a laboratory environment to promote innovation and best practices related to information security.

“Unisys has been a GTI sponsor since its inception, and we are gratified to have the company’s support as we launch the Security Center of Excellence,” said Charlie Gerhards, executive co-director at the center and former chief information officer for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. “With Unisys’ help, we hope to make this facility not just an education environment but a place where security professionals can develop and test new tools and methods to address information security challenges in government.”

Unisys, based in Blue Bell, Pa., is a longstanding provider of IT products and services to state and local government agencies in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Unisys recently announced it was selected by the Commonwealth to host and operate what is expected to be one of the largest secure, cloud-based, on-demand IT computing implementations by a U.S. state government.

The City of Philadelphia also recently awarded a contract to Unisys to build an enhanced customer relationship management solution to support its "Philly 311" program for responding to citizen requests and inquiries, and proactively reaching out to citizens to improve their quality of life. “As a leading provider of IT solutions to government agencies throughout Pennsylvania, we welcome the opportunity to assist the Commonwealth’s education and innovation programs by providing technical expertise and financial support,” said Reed Laughlin, vice president, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Team, Unisys. “We appreciate the opportunity to play a role in this effort to enhance the skills and knowledge of government IT security professionals.”
