dataplay, inc. and imation announced today that imation will become the first manufacturer of dataplay optical media. the discs, 32 mm across, hold 500 mb of data. although the discs, unlike popular minidisc technology, are write-once, they do support multiple sessions. the discs have a relatively high transfer rate of 1 mb/s, both read and write. power requirements are very low, with only 160 ma required for a 128 kbps stream from the disc, with buffering further increasing power efficiency. dataplay will apparently not offer a read-only “engine” or drive, but will instead support recording with every device based on the technology.
prerecorded content discs will be available with an extra user-recordable data area, and several solutions have been demonstrated for content addition via brick-and-mortar kiosks, both at and after point-of-sale. availability of dataplay discs and accompanying devices is expected in q4.
dataplay's website provides a search engine for upcoming dataplay-enabled products. for more information on the deal, see cnet.
james's opinion
i like this. even on my pc, i seldom use cd-rw, favoring instead cheap cd-r media. but i don't know whether i would be as quick to record onto a write-once disc that cost me $10! hopefully, once additional manufacturers begin producing the media and the process is refined and streamlined, the price of these discs will drop dramatically. after all, i can remember thinking that $26 for a cd-r was a steal! (that would be around 1993-1994.) it's still a very promising technology that legitimizes handheld mp3 players, handheld computers, and gprs-capable phones for a much broader market.
now, we need to consider what can be done with the devices. cnet's write-up estimates that the media should be able to hold 11 hours of music with 128 kpbs mp3 encoding. this is an abuse of the technology. why do we need 11 hours on a disc? please, someone tell me why we can't enjoy beautiful 5.1 (or 7.1) multichannel sound, encoded at 160 kbps with mp3pro? i'd be willing to buy prerecorded discs with that kind of quality any day. i'd also love being able to go to a store or my computer and download an episode of friends or (up until last week) charmed that i missed while i was out, then watching it on my handheld or laptop without being confined to my home. even at $1/episode, i'll bet the networks'd make more money there than from advertising. and with a 100-year shelf life, we wouldn't need tvland anymore. ;)
with mpeg-4 capable digital camcorders becoming available, this new tech is set to become a hot item for the home video enthusiast as well. and never, never forget the implications for your pda.

how about microcomputers? (11:41am est tue jun 19 2001) replace 3.5″ hds with the 2.5″, replace the traditional floppy with a ssfdc(solid state floppy disk card) and your 5″ cd rom drive with this 1.28″ cd replacement. so long clunky box on my desk, hello kleenex box sized computers that have everything. now, where's my damned flying car! – by z1

| i'm skeptical (12:48pm est tue jun 19 2001) i have to admit that i like the idea of this technology, but i also have to say that i'm skeptical of its success. cd-r and cd-rw have been extremely successful for two reasons: 1) the media is cheap, and 2) the media is compatible with the billions of cd players and cd-rom drives that people own. minidisk, and similar technologies, have all had a very hard time getting a foothold. most people are reluctant to spend money on a new drive/player for a technology that may or may not make it. i'd love for a media format such as this to take off. but i'm not going to run out and buy one until i know that it is going to survive. i suspect most people are of the same opinion. and that, i'm afraid, will spell its demise. | the point… (12:59pm est tue jun 19 2001) the reason why you want 11 hours of music on one disk is for portable and mobile music devices. what is the point to 5.1, 7.1 digital surround sound when you are only using a 2 speaker system (headphones). sure, for my home theater system, give me the highest quality audio possible so i can feed my 8 speakers, but the only point of these tiny disks is for mobile applications. if they intend to market these for home theater centers, then they have already failed. – by ed |

good points (1:37pm est tue jun 19 2001) ed and kieth both have good points. i think kieth may be a little gloomy since these sound like they are the perfect match for portable mp3 players, if the price comes down. if they just hire the same people who did the dvd marketing, they will make it! that with hardware manufacturer making lots of the player/recorders. guess we'll see. – by seljo myeri

2 proprietary or not 2 proprietary?… (7:56pm est tue jun 19 2001) … that is the question. whether 't is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune (sony's minidisc), or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing end them? well… maybe it's not what shakespeare wrote or meant, but it applies. make something proprietary and you lose a lot of customers to the high prices. this seems like it'd be a neat toy to get, if the optical reader isn't too expensive, they can cut back on the price of the disks and/or get a rw version out ($10 for an rw version would probably fly a little better). i often wonder why sony abandoned its original use for the minidisk as a storage medium, instead of just investing a little more effort into it. at least they're learning their lesson with the memory stick and licensing it to other vendors (wasn't there a geek.com article earlier in the week about the memory stick prices dropping due to the licensing?). this could die if they play their cards wrong. let's hope they don't. – by bleh

lets be realistic (11:02pm est tue jun 19 2001) this sounds really geeky and i hate to sound pesemistic, but they have not demonstrated an overwhelming need for this device. mp3 players using flash cards or whatever hold about an hours music which can be repeatedly changed. these discs are a write only. most people have no need for 11 hours of music on a portable device. how many people regularly travel for more than a couple of hours in planes, buses or trains? dvd writeables are going to replace cd-r/rw in the next couple of years with capacities way above this. added to this are the 100g drives that are just about to become available. so there is little advantage in the general storage market. will it change the size of desktops? probably not as most of the space is taken up by the motherboard and plugin boards. summary: nifty idea that is unlikely to succeeded without a major advertising campaign that can convinvce people they really to have it. – by kestrel

this probably will work…. (4:05am est wed jun 20 2001) if it only costs me $90 to carry all my favourite songs around in my pocket, then this will definately work…. at the moment you pay this much for a couple of hours worth of flash memory. flash sucks…. yeah you can write to it, but with such an enourmous amount of storage who cares…. i'm sure someone will make a player with both flash and a disk reader… i can't believe someone said there was no need for 11 hours of music… i travel three hours a day to and from work, and playing the same tunes on both journeys gets tedious… plus piddling about putting new tunes on my player….. why bother… drop a disk in and forget… for example you could have all your favourite tracks on one disc, and then store the play lists in the flash.. people with minidiscs hardly use the re-write facility anyway… they just make up their own compilations and then leave them as they are… well at least my mates do… as long as they market this at teenagers it will fly… – by sbwahtmtf

why o why (6:31am est wed jun 20 2001) with all this new technology coming out its hard to guess whats going to go under and whats going to stay, personally i love my minidisk and i think that people should think of expanding that technology coz i mean that disk has 700 mb capacity compared to the 500 on this new disk if people had md drives that could read and write data and music it would be heaps cool, i mean its only $5 aus for 1 disk even cheaper for you usa guys so i say mr business man give it a go :) – by smokey
why not rewritable? (7:57am est wed jun 20 2001) readwritable technology already exists and the demand for a cheap compact version is clear. i suspect the big entertainment companies wont back a product that offers the easy recording of their multimedia – even though most of us want to make and record our own home videos, music, etc. whats left is cd-r for laptops – big deal! – by ian
okay, smokey… (9:57am est wed jun 20 2001) minidiscs do not hold 700mb. minidiscs are capable of storing around 100mb of data. – by not smokey
kestrel (10:29am est wed jun 20 2001) 11hrs on a cdr disc is good, as u can bring, say, a few disks and have completely all your favorite songs with u… also, mobos and add in cards do take up most of the room, but w/ highly integrated (and fast) mobos coming out (i.e. using nvidia nforce chipsets) in microatx form factors, flexatx and ultra microatx cases could house these mini-rom devices for slim-line desktops, horizontal or vertical standing. also, they'd make great roms for laptops and sub-notebooks, pdas, hand-held gaming consoles (i.e. gameboy), etc. – by bop
re: lets be realistic (1:27pm est wed jun 20 2001) the thing isn't if dvd rewritable drives will have greater capacity, it's if they'll have the same portability. i mean, this thing is about the size of a quarter, meaning you can stick a few of them in your pocket. not to mention they have a protective “caddy” around them at all times, so you don't have to worry quite as much about scratches. also, as it stands now, these are significantly cheaper than the cheapest dvd-rw media. how many times have you had to send someone something on cd-r, only to have 90% of the disc be empty? i went ahead and shelled out a buck a piece on some miniature cd-rs that hold 210mb or so, and feel perfectly fine doing so. why? the media is just about universal (as opposed to zip disks or other media), easy to burn to, and i know i don't need 650mb to put what i need to send out on them. if i could have 500mb on a disk the size of a quarter, i'd definitely get it if it were universal enough for what i need it for. – by blech
how about this… (8:48am est thu jun 21 2001) since they've committed to providing a single drive product with a single laser to keep costs low, make an rw disc that can be written in the normal players, and erased wholesale with a pc drive or a dedicated erasure device. back up the part you want to keep, erase the disc, then write back to the disc. seems fine to me… – by james
no need for eleven hours of mp3? (10:39pm est sun jul 22 2001) i think the market disagrees with you. a quick/partial list of mp3-capable portable cd players you can go out and buy /today/: either several companies are wasting a lot of money, or there's a definate demand. take your pick.
who wants restrictions? (4:42pm est wed jul 25 2001) these are to released in a couple months with about every restriction known to god. first off using these as a audio player is a mistake. all players use sdmi which mean they at anytime can restrict any mp3 you try to put on there. they are planning to allow only paid for mp3s to be stored on the discs. this would not be the practical storage medium for digital cameras either. no rewrite means you cannot erase. that means “bad” pictures will remain. this the best we got? 2.5in hdd's will hold 100gb in a couple years. no way am i using this 250mb per side disc.
another proprietary format? (4:52pm est tue jul 31 2001) don't we already have mini-cd-rs? sure they only hold 128 megs but for ultra portable devices (pda, mp3 players, gps) a $2 disc isn't bad. most cd-rom drives will read them and most cd-writers will write them. all we need now are the products to use them. keep your new format thank you. – by bolo mk xxviii
give it to me! (1:38pm est mon nov 26 2001) i actually had one of these disks in my hand! if the compression gets good enough to put 1.5 hours of video on one of these. give'm to me. i could replace all those bulky vhs movies that i've had for years. however, until then, a plug-in drive for my laptop or a digital camera that allows me to use these would be great. – by del

amusement (2:12pm est mon aug 28 2006) its quite amusing reading responces to articles that are as old as this one… the technology at this point obviously didnt make it. the only reason i came across this is cause i found one of the disks and i was curious. i can honestly say that i would have loved a drive for this. untill i found out that they were write once only. that is of no use to me, or anyone. if they were rewritable i atleast think they would have survived, definetly not become revolutionary, but atleast survived. i would have invested in one. side notes.. reading a reference to 100 gig drives coming out soon was amusing concidering we have 750 gig drives now. hell a laptop can hold 160 now. – by drexial
