This is a superb thread. Another essential read. Ties in with conversations from yesterday about research ethics and the causes of underrepresentation of minorities in trials.

This is so important and you’ve articulated it brilliantly. Stigma and bias, in particular, within the healthcare setting whether perceived or real, are a huge barrier to healthcare access by people of colour. Really proud of you!

Finally we should be empowering communities using methods such as community participatory research to lead on interventions for their own communities. They are best placed to know what may work. Funding should reflect this. /19

I concluded by emphasing that we should not stereotype people because of their ethnic origin but should work towards creating individual & holistic management plans with our patients which aim to give them agency to make their own decisions... /18

I then discussed intersectionality theory by & how we can use this in clinical practice to look at the external forces that may affect the patient in front of us & which may impact on their ability to look after their health /15

Institutional racism also means that people are more likely to suffer ill health due to poverty, inadequate housing, living in an area of poor air quality etc. Exposure to daily discrimination is a chronic stressor that can affect mental & physical health /14

Much of our knowledge of medicine & anatomy that we use today has been gained from unethical & exploitative practices done to people from marginalised groups. It’s important that we realise this when we think about why people may distrust us as health care professionals /12
