In 2019 EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) continued its focus on openness and interoperability and began to implement the open source library services platform FOLIO. EBSCO has grown through acquisitions and strategic partnerships and an inclusive development process has enabled EBSCO to partner with libraries and librarians of all types and sizes. The year 2020 will bring even more support for Open Research as EBSCO partners with companies that support research output workflows.
EBSCOs key focus has always been the content it makes available to libraries. And as new full-text resources emerge to support emerging and lesser supported areas of study, the company is also adding value through providing full text components to quintessential subject indexes. The metadata for all of these resources is available for discovery as part of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). EBSCOs continued success with the lean/Agile and SAFe principles is bringing these enhancements and features to market faster and incorporating customer feedback improving the user experience and improving librarian workflows.
EBSCO acquired Stacks in 2019 a natural extension of a long-standing partnership that provides libraries with more customizable avenues for exposing content and improving the user experience for both administrators and patrons. Stacks helps libraries to support and boost usage. Demand for streamlined access to library resources continues to grow, a problem that is addressed by EBSCO through its partnership with OpenAthens. These tools are becoming rapidly adopted by individual universities and consortia, a fact that highlights the need for the greater authentication and simplified access that Open Athens provides.
Strategic partnerships designed to give libraries stewardship began in 2019 with the strategic partnership with Arkivum which enables long-term data management and preservation via Arkivums Perpetua. The Perpetua integration with FOLIO is the first integration of a third-party commercial application in FOLIO. Through Perpetua in FOLIO libraries will be able to manage their archival collections including retrieving and updating archival records.
Google Authentication for EDS and EBSCOhost were also introduced in 2019. Improvements to Research Starters are part of a continuous development philosophy that marks the evolution of EDS and EBSCOhost in way that connects library goals and user expectations. EBSCO has worked with The Carroll Center for the Blind and has partnered with W3C ensuring that accessibility is a part of the development process. By connecting with librarians and users through the EBSCO User Group, strategic summits, focus groups, advisory boards, surveys and on-site testing, EBSCO better able to understand the needs of its customers and the expectations and behaviors of library users.
Further, the company announced the roadmap and roll-out plans centered on the evolution of its research services designed to heighten the capabilities, UI and overall experience of EDS and EBSCOhost. With various components already rolled out and several to follow in succession, the evolution encompasses enhanced search capabilities, a visual concept map experience, a new approach to video display and usage, a new mobile app, and new UI all with a focus on addressing market needs with user input. EBSCOs overarching focus is an experience to support internalization, accessibility and a personalized experience that puts user privacy at the forefront. Libraries will have simultaneous access to the existing EDS UI and the new EDS UI to be able to become familiar with new features and to provide feedback.
For FOLIO, significant strides have been made with the development team hitting a host of anticipated milestones. EBSCO continues to work closely with beta partners, early adopters, developers and the larger FOLIO community. EBSCO began to implement sites in 2019 with the launch of first ERM then the full FOLIO platform at Chalmers University in Sweden. A host of libraries are slated to implement FOLIO ERM and/or the full platform in 2020 including original beta sites University of Alabama and the Five Colleges (University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Smith College, Amherst College, Mt. Holyoke and Hampshire College) with Missouri State and Cornell also implementing in 2020. Beginning in 2019 EBSCO has also partnered with more than a dozen service providers to implement FOLIO around the world to ensure that libraries have local support from trusted service providers. Additional partnerships will be announced in 2020 as implementations increase.
GOBI Library Solutions remains committed to providing libraries choice by offering integrated workflows with all major ILS systems (including FOLIO) and supporting more than 20 eSupplier platforms and the broadest choice of acquisition models. With the new GOBI/FOLIO integration, libraries can place an order in GOBI and immediately see a purchase order number generated by FOLIO in GOBI. When libraries view their GOBI orders in FOLIO, they will see bibliographic records from GOBI and additional order details. Additionally, in FOLIO, libraries can receive and create an item record for the purchased items. The integration of GOBI with FOLIO begins with the acquisitions process and carries through to other elements of tech services to help fully process an item.
In addition, this integration ensures that GOBI holdings are automatically updated and set in FOLIO as well.
A new integration between GOBI and EBSCO Holdings Link Management (HLM) enables eligible libraries to have their holdings automatically updated to reflect their GOBI e-book, eCollection and Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) purchases from all suppliers within 24 hours of fulfillment without any manual intervention. With auto-population of holdings for GOBI, managing holdings for downstream services like EDS, Publication Finder, Full Text Finder and Usage Consolidation is streamlined, saving libraries time.

In late 2018, EBSCO redesigned the user experience for EBSCONET and introduced the Customer Service Portal which allows customers to submit queries, receive responses, and to track that communication within the EBSCONET user interface. In 2019, enhancements continue including a Billing/Invoice question option in the Customer Portal and the addition of The Five-Year Price Analysis to EBSCONET reports. Additional enhancements include the ability to mark Title Changes as read and to share Title Change information externally, even with library staff who do not have EBSCONET accounts. A further enhancement to EBSCONET Renewals now provides detailed information on combination, membership and package titles within the renewals interface, allowing users to easily identify titles that come with another subscription, as well as the list of titles included with the parent title. An Order History tab was added at the order level, displaying historical order data, including order number, start date and format, back to the mid-1990s.
In 2020, EBSCOs expanded E-Package Renewals tool, piloted in late 2019, will be released to customers worldwide. Additions to the Customer Service Portal will provide enhanced options for viewing, sorting and filtering service requests. The roadmap includes modifications to claims management features as well as other customer-requested enhancements that will be introduced throughout the year.
