Novell this week announced a version of SuSE Linux for HP’s Itanium-based Integrity servers.
Dubbed SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for IPF, the product can run on all HP’s Integrity servers, including the high-end Superdome. HP will bundle its Integrity servers with SuSE Linux if customers want it.
HP’s Itanium Processor Family (IPF) contains servers with as many as 16 processors per machine. According to Novell’s claims, SuSE Linux is the first Linux 2.6 kernel to run on Itanium. Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, which runs on Itanium, uses the 2.4.21 kernel.
SuSE Linux also runs on x86, AMD64, Intel EM64T and IBM’s Power, zSeries and S/390 servers.
The operating system costs $349 per year for one server with up to two processors, or $899 for one server with up to 16 processors. It is available now.
