Capcom Says RE Engine Will Power Its Next-Gen Game Development, Numerous Titles Already in the Works
The RE Engine is Capcom's next-gen flagship game development tool.
Capcom is on a roll after the one-two punch of Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry 5 earlier this year. Both games were praised for their unique takes on their respective franchises, but also for their visual and graphical presentation. The secret could be the company's RE Engine, which it says will power the next generation of Capcom games.
In a Q&A with investors for its most recent financial earnings report, Capcom says that the games developed on RE Engine, which includes Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Devil May Cry 5, have all received critical acclaim. As such, the plan is to continue using what works.
"From the early stages of building this engine, we kept the ability to augment it for next-generation development in mind," Capcom says. "As such, we view the RE Engine as one of our strengths that will contribute to next-generation game creation."
Although Capcom won't reveal how many games are currently in-development, the company says "there are numerous titles currently being developed internally with the RE Engine."
The RE Engine was first used as the full-game engine for Resident Evil 7. Despite the name, the engine is not short for Resident Evil Engine, but rather Reach for the Moon Engine. It was subsequently used for both Resident Evil 2 Remake and Devil May Cry 5.
The RE Engine will presumably replace Capcom's previous proprietary engine, the MT Framework. That engine was still used for Monster Hunter: World and Mega Man 11, but there's a good chance that future games in the series will switch over to the RE Engine based on the critical reactions, as well as its future-forward capabilities.
