Send Your Dog to Summer Camp

At this point in the summer, one of three things is likely going through your dog-owning mind.

One: You’re feeling pretty guilty about sending Bruiser to be locked up in a tiny crate while you jet off on vacay. Two: You’re feeling pretty guilty about leaving Bruiser holed up inside all day, even if you’re going nowhere. Three: You kinda just wish you and Bruiser could run away together upstate.

In any scenario, might we suggest doggie summer camp. Here, five camps around NYC.

New York’s Summer Beauty Guide

Ah, summer in the city. Instagram-worthy skyline sunsets. The sweet song of the ice-cream truck. And…pit stains? Mastering summer beauty is a science and an art. Luckily, you’re a savvy New Yorker, and there are hassle-free ways to keep your look put together and fresh. Here, eight easy tips for looking (and feeling) cool from now until Labor Day.

Master Day-to-night Hair

Michael Dumler

Lazy summer hair can still look polished and pretty. Before work, brush damp hair and pull it up into a topknot, then secure with a soft hair tie (we like Mane Message). Later, shake out your tresses and finger-comb them into beachy waves. You’re ready to let loose just in time for sunset cocktails.

This is not the time to try out the mattefied look. Embrace your “dewy” (er, sweaty) complexion with a lightweight BB cream that offers a touch of coverage. Added bonus: your morning routine just got easier too.

This city is a hot mess in the summer. And when you’re out of your apartment from dawn to dusk (and beyond), all-day protection is essential. That’s where Secret Clinical Strength Invisible Solid ($12) comes in. The Adapts and Responds™ technology adjusts to your own unpredictable ups and downs and responds with personalized sweat and odor protection to stop odor before it starts. So it’s easy to look and feel fresh, from your crowded commute to a busy day of meetings to after-work cocktails.

The Newest Earring Trend is Also the Funnest

You’ve seen it on the red carpet, on your one impossibly cool friend and now front and center on the cover of Vogue.

The statement ear cuff.

It takes a bit of finessing to pull it off properly. Let’s see how it’s done (and then where to score one for yourself).

Yep, it’s the same Repossi ear cuff that Keira Knightley wore to this year’s SAG Awards.

You’ve probably noticed the trend in recent months on your favorite red-carpet celebs, like Jennifer Lawrence.

And Rihanna.

But these earrings don’t all have to be clipped up high. Sandra Bullock opted for a low version.

Emma Watson went for thin and delicate.

And Rashida Jones, for pearls.

The point is: There are plenty of ways to elegantly pull off the ear-cuff trend. Now let’s go shopping.

10 Great “American” Novels

Grab a hot dog, a pool float and one of these great “American” novels (plus a memoir and a reference book) and celebrate the country’s 239th birthday the right way.

“american Dervish” By Ayad Akhtar

http://www.amazon.com/American-Dervish-Novel-Ayad-Akhtar/dp/B00CF5JJFK/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372106750&sr=1-1&keywords=american+dervish

This 2012 debut novel tells the story of a young Pakistani-American boy in love for the first time. It’s not only outrageously well written; it’s also an extremely nuanced look at growing up Muslim in the United States.

“american Vampire, Vol. 1” By Scott Snyder And Stephen King

http://www.amazon.com/American-Vampire-Vol-Scott-Snyder/dp/1401229743/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372107474&sr=1-1&keywords=american+vampire

In Snyder’s novella, an American vampire takes revenge on her European tormentors. In King’s, an 1880s outlaw discovers a (literal) taste for blood. Together, these stories form one of the most fun vampire romps we’ve read since Interview with a…

“american Savage” By Dan Savage

http://www.amazon.com/American-Savage-Insights-Slights-Politics/dp/0525954104/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372107324&sr=1-1&keywords=american+savage

We’ve long loved irreverently sage sex-advice columnist Dan Savage for his bold musings on relationships and intimacy. His newest collection of personal essays deftly takes on fatherhood, gay rights and the state of U.S. politics.

“in America” By Susan Sontag

http://www.amazon.com/America-Novel-Susan-Sontag/dp/0312273207/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372367241&sr=1-6&keywords=in+america

This National Book Award winner is both epic and profound, telling the story of a group of Poles who immigrate to the States in 1876.

“american Rust” By Philipp Meyer

http://www.amazon.com/American-Rust-Random-Readers-Circle/dp/0385527527/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372106560&sr=1-1&keywords=american+rust

Set in an economically devastated Pennsylvania steel town, this heartbreaking novel about the American dream is both of the moment and evocative of John Steinbeck’s Depression-era literature.

“american Wife” By Curtis Sittenfeld

http://www.amazon.com/American-Wife-Novel-Curtis-Sittenfeld/dp/0812975405/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372368313&sr=1-1&keywords=american+wife

Based loosely on the biography of Laura Bush, Curtis Sittenfeld’s 2008 novel explores the interior life of a woman who becomes an unwitting First Lady. As with all of Sittenfeld’s heroines, you’ll feel extremely connected to this character…which makes it extra weird when George W. swoops in.

“how To Make An American Quilt” By Whitney Otto

http://www.amazon.com/Make-American-Quilt-Whitney-Otto/dp/0345388968/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372107557&sr=1-1&keywords=how+to+make+an+american+quilt

OMG, we still totally love this 1992 best seller that weaves together the lives of eight members of a women’s sewing circle. The Winona Ryder film adaptation ain’t bad either.

“american Psycho” By Bret Easton Ellis

http://www.amazon.com/American-Psycho-Bret-Easton-Ellis/dp/0679735771/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372370215&sr=1-1&keywords=american+psycho

Oh, Bret Easton Ellis, you take yourself so seriously. And while your super-disturbing novel about a Manhattan businessman serial killer might be a tad overwrought, it’s a totally fun takedown of yuppie America.

“american Pastoral” By Philip Roth

http://www.amazon.com/American-Pastoral-Philip-Roth/dp/0375701427/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372107186&sr=1-1&keywords=american+pastoral

One of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Philip Roth can really do no wrong. That said, American Pastoral–about a legendary athlete and the explosive 1960s–is probably our favorite of his novels. Plus, we kind of think all books are better when Nathan Zuckerman narrates.

“the American Heritage” Dictionary

http://www.amazon.com/American-Heritage-Dictionary-Fifth-Market/dp/0553583220/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372369623&sr=1-1&keywords=american+heritage+dictionary

Because who doesn’t love looking up the difference between among and amongst? New this year: “cosplay” (the act of dressing up as one’s favorite character, usually for a convention), banh mi (a Vietnamese sandwich) and “pregame” (it’s about time).

Every once in a blue moon, you bust out your waffle iron to make a special breakfast. Well, folks, we’ve got a recipe that will have you using that trusty gadget a heck of a lot more often: quesadillas. This is one of those why-haven’t-we-tried-this-before methods that’s simple to execute but yields impressive results. Place a tortilla onto your waffle iron, add shredded cheese and then top with another tortilla. Close the waffle iron and in minutes you’ll have the most golden, melty, crispy-edged quesadilla you’ve ever seen.

334 calories

20g fat

22g carbs

16g protein

1g sugars

8 tortillas (make sure they aren’t larger than your waffle iron)

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

2 avocados, peeled and sliced, for serving

1 cup salsa verde, or more as needed, for serving

1. Plug in and preheat the waffle iron. Grease the interior with nonstick spray.

2. Place a tortilla on the waffle iron and mound ½ cup cheese in the center.

3. Place another tortilla on top and close the waffle iron to press the quesadilla. Cook until the quesadilla is golden and fully heated through, 3 to 5 minutes.

4. Remove the quesadilla from the waffle iron and repeat with the remaining tortillas and cheese. (If you’re making a larger batch, keep the quesadillas warm and toasty in a 200°F oven.)

5. Serve the quesadillas warm, topped with avocado slices and a few tablespoons of salsa verde.

The Best Summer Hairstyles

Whether it’s a flirty new chop or an inventive updo, don’t you always look to your favorite celebs to try it first?

Here, A-list ladies showing us how summer hair is done.

The Pixie Cut

@iamjhud/instragram
https://instagram.com/p/y3bGgeOEhR/?taken-by=iamjhud

See the slightly rumpled texture of Jennifer Hudson’s ’do? That’s the new way to wear super-short hair–nothing too perfect.

@iamjhud/instragram
https://instagram.com/p/y3bGgeOEhR/?taken-by=iamjhud

The Lob

Two things: First, Game of Thrones’ Khaleesi (Emilia Clarke) is a brunette IRL. Second, she just sprung for a shoulder-skimming long bob that’s making us all a bit jealous.

The Balayage Highlights

@jamiejchung/instagram
https://instagram.com/p/rD8ic5Beu7/?taken-by=jamiejchung

If color–not a cut–is more your speed, give balayage highlights a go, like Resident Advisors’ Jamie Chung wears here. Being dubbed “the new ombré,” the process uses a much more natural-looking painted technique.

The Pink Dye Job

@clsymonds/Instagram

Or go entirely un-natural (and super fun). If anyone questions it, just say Kaley Cuoco and Kelly Ripa talked you into it.

The Heidi Braid

Alright, now to the styles you can whip up with your existing strands. Take this photo from a recent Valentino runway show to your stylist (but secretly watch and learn so you can re-create it over and over again).

The Thin Braid

@beyonce/Instagram
https://instagram.com/p/4PPwPQPwzV/

This Beyoncé-approved style is all about making a simple plait look elegant. Rather than last year’s messy fishtail, you’ll want to start with a slick, high ponytail and braid super-tight all the way down.

The Half Bun

Harper’s Bazaar
http://www.harpersbazaar.com/beauty/hair/advice/g4796/celebrity-half-buns/?slide=1

Without a doubt this year’s trendiest look, the half bun (like here on Julianne Hough) reinvents that whole half-up-half-down look we all had on the back burner.

Non-Embarrassing Ways to Dress for the Fourth of July

Big weekend ahead. You’ve got barbecues, parades, ombré ice-cream cakes and exploding fire to look forward to. Rifling around the back of your closet for that flag tee? Not so much.

Consider elevated outfit combos that still give a patriotic vibe.

Mix Up Your Nautical Stripes

Take a cue from Olivia Munn and buck the expected fisherman sweater and boat shoes. Instead, pair a striped tank with a patterned skirt (preferably in a poppy red) and turn some heads.

Bust Out The Gingham

Or follow Emmy Rossum’s lead and go with the trendiest print of the season–the all-American gingham. (Though, we have no idea what’s going on with that purse.)  If you haven’t yet snagged a vintage-esque dress, you can create the same effect with your dude’s J.Crew button-up (tied at the waist, of course).

Pick Two Out Of Three

Damsel in Dior
http://damselindior.com/mix-up-cover-up/

Hey, it’s OK if you’re not sporting red, white and blue. Two hues will do. Think: your favorite white cotton skirt and your tried-and-true chambray.

Damsel in Dior

Or Go Entirely Monochromatic

Atlantic Pacific
http://atlantic-pacific.blogspot.com/2015/04/clean.html

Then again, you really can never go wrong with all white. If you’re itching for some color, add a swipe of red lipstick. That way, no one can call you out for shirking your patriotic duty.
