It's rare for a graphic novel to make our Best of the Month top 10 list, but I defy you to open this book and not be immediately lovestruck by the pep of teenage Lou and the cast of characters she interacts with (including two beguiling—and talking—Pomeranians, Henny and Penny). This is a coming-of-age story; a stranger-moves-in story; a my-parents-don't-get-me-and-don’t-get-each-other story; an AIDS story; and a big laugh, break-your-heart-in-two story. The voice, the hilarity, the illustrations, Lou's observations, and the interludes of the dogs' conversations will have you cackling in no time (page three for me), and Emil Wilson’s sketches and text treatment of this novel, which reads like a journal, make it even more emotionally resonant. The Nightingales is quirky, charming, and gobsmackingly fresh, and while it may be a hidden gem on our list, it's one I can't wait for everyone to read. —Al Woodworth, Amazon Editor
My heart is pounding. My stomach is in knots. Now that I’ve nearly caught my breath, I can tell you about Biological War, which is both nightmare fuel and one of the most memorable books I’ve read so far this year. In 2024, Annie Jacobsen gripped us with Nuclear War, a true, and terrifying, tale of what would happen if an atomic bomb were dropped today (it’s currently being adapted into a movie). Now, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated author has turned her attention to—dare I say it—an even scarier weapon: biological war. A scientist accidentally unleashes a deadly virus, and chaos ensues. As unstoppable contagion sweeps the world in record time, no one is safe, and packed hospitals are the least of our concerns. What makes this all-the-more riveting is that it’s based on real life: as we speak, top-secret labs are tinkering with similar plagues, and militaries far and wide have prepared (some more than others) for this apocalyptic scenario. And while my hands were soaked in sweat as I turned each page, I also couldn’t stop reading this ripped-from-reality horror. I think about it nearly every day. —Lindsay Powers, Amazon Editor

Every character in this book got stuck in my heart—the tough-love stepmother, Nora’s emotionally repressed brother, the dutiful society wife, and Nora’s blind and tough-as-nails friend. Sunlight Finds You is a heartbreaking Romeo and Juliet-style tale of star-crossed lovers, impossible choices, and familial obligation. More than four million people have read the iconic A People’s History of the United States, which, upon its 1980 publication, changed the way we talk about the past—and undoubtedly inspired modern-day best sellers like Democracy Awakening and A Resistance History of the United States. Now, we meet the man who sparked an entire revisionist history movement, Howard Zinn, and learn that not only did he chronicle the most charged moments of the past century, but he was also on the front lines of them. Zinn fought in WWII as a bombardier; he marched for civil rights alongside SNCC, which spearheaded Freedom Rides and lunch-counter sit-ins; he taught at Spelman College (The Color Purple’s Alice Walker was one of his students); he hid the Pentagon Papers, which were key in ending the Vietnam War, in his home…he even inspired a plotline in Good Will Hunting because a young Matt Damon was his neighbor. What a life! And despite facing tumultuous times, he never lost hope, optimism, or his fighting spirit—always leaning on the past as a guide to action, to change the present and the future (which is why there have been countless attempts to ban his landmark book). Paul Yoon’s novels never disappoint. Instead, they nestle in your mind, lodge themselves in your heart, and eventually become woven into the fabric of the way you look at the world. And so begins his dangerous, perhaps futile quest to return to the only place that ever made sense. Fans of Rachel Cusk and Katie Kitamura will relish Valeria Luiselli’s latest, which basks in the liminal space of displacement and transition. Beginning Middle End is the story of a mother who flees her second marriage and decides to stay in her lover’s Sicilian apartment with her 12-year-old daughter as they reckon with how to be, where to be, and who they are. They comb through his perfectly curated bookshelves. They take pictures. They talk to their mother/grandmother in Mexico, who is losing her grasp on reality, making them question memory. They sift through the belongings they brought from home—including a mosaic handed down over generations—and they wonder if it was pilfered. They talk about the meaning of life, the myths that appear every day, and what it means that Mount Etna may erupt soon. It’s a snapshot of a summer in flux, when the world is both opening up to them and closing down, when possessions matter little yet also guide their conversations and actions. Meditative and observant, Beginning Middle End is brilliantly mesmerizing in the way that Elena Ferrante’s and André Aciman’s Italian novels capture that heady, juicy feeling of summertime, and sneakily wry in its examination of home, identity, and dislocation.
