The best campus novels, memoirs, and more to make you excited about school this fall
    Lindsay Powers | August 21, 2026
Off-Campus book series “The Deal,” “Bad City,” “Night Objects,” “Educated,” and “Disorientation” will send you straight back to school mentally.
A school campus provides the perfect setting for an captivating story, and, at this time of year, we can’t help imagining that we are returning to school (no matter our age). Play hooky from your own responsibilities to lose yourself in one of these incredible books that will whisk you back to the classroom (or, and perhaps more fun, to the action happening outside of the classroom).
If you want a page-to-screen campus blockbuster
We wouldn’t dream of leaving the blockbuster sports romance Off Campus out of this round up. The five-book series, written by TikTok-favorite author Elle Kennedy, follows college hockey teammates, Garrett, Dean, Logan, and Tucker, who attend the fictional Briar University. In addition to their bromance, each book chronicles a steamy romance with another young coed. The first in the series, The Deal, follows bad boy Garrett, whose position on the team is in peril due to his flailing grades. Enter Hannah, who agrees to tutor him in exchange for a fake dating scheme that takes a sultry twist. After reading, you’ll quickly inhale the other four books in the series… and then want to stream it on Amazon Prime (where a second season has already been announced). Check out more of our favorite sports romances. —Lindsay Powers, Amazon Prime
If you want a campus satire
Giddy with satire and the hilarious consequences of deadline-dodging, Elaine Hsieh Chou’s uproarious boondoggle of a campus whodunit packs a punch. It’s wry and sardonic, a story that takes unexpected twists and turns and, in so doing, reveals a world of academia and racism that is far more biting than it initially seems. Full of quirky comedy and laser sharp observations, Disorientation will make you laugh hard and make your brain whir with questions about cultural identity and the ugly truth of tokenism and racism. —Al Woodworth, Amazon Editor
If you want an inspiring reminder that knowledge is power
Tara Westover wasn’t your garden variety college student. When the Holocaust was mentioned in a history class, she didn’t know what it was (no, really). That’s because she didn’t see the inside of a classroom until the age of 17. Public education was one of the many things her fanatic father was dubious of, believing it a means for the government to brainwash its gullible citizens, and her mother wasn’t diligent on the homeschooling front. If it wasn’t for a brother who managed to extricate himself from their isolated—and often dangerous worldWestover might still be in rural Idaho, trying to survive her survivalist upbringing. It’s a miraculous story she tells in this memoir. For those of us who took our educations for granted, who occasionally fell asleep in large lecture halls (and inconveniently small ones), it’s hard to grasp the level of grit—not to mention intellect—required to pull off what Westover did. But eventually earning a PhD from Cambridge University may have been the easy part, at least compared to what she had to sacrifice to attain it. The courage it took to make that sacrifice was the truest indicator of how far she’d come, and how much she’d learned. Educated is an inspiring reminder that knowledge is, indeed, power. —Erin Kodicek, Amazon Editor
If you want a shocking true story about campus misdeeds
Race, class, and privilege intersect in this twisty tale about drugs, power, and sex. An unlikely whistleblower exposes the former dean of the University of Southern California medical school for leading a double life—funnelling drugs to a prostitute in rehab while overseeing the education of tomorrow’s doctors. Thanks to this crooked dean’s fundraising prowess, he’s protected by the president of the school, the town where the university is located, and even the Los Angeles Times—home of the journalist determined to uncover the corruption, no matter the personal cost. Paul Pringle doggedly pursues every angle, eventually discovering more unethical professors, including a gynecologist whose illegal acts led the school to pay more than $1 billion in damages. And yes, all this is happening amid the Varsity Blues saga, in which Lori Loughlin and other stars paid money for their kids to be fraudulently admitted. This is a real page-turner, a thriller that’s hard to believe is nonfiction. —Lindsay Powers, Amazon Editor
If you're seeking an absorbing mystery at a boarding school
Both a haunting coming-of-age tale and a carefully constructed mystery, Night Objects lived in my head for days. After suffering an enormous personal loss, 15-year-old Lenny is sent to an elite boarding school, where secrets swirl and danger looms large. Untethered and aimless, Lenny is desperate to belong, even if that means changing parts of herself to fit in with her privileged and mostly white peers. But that desperation turns into obsession, and soon Lenny finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation that forces her to reckon with the choices she’s made. This is a story about grief, growing up, and those pivotal moments in adolescence where the floor drops out from under you, allowing you to see, perhaps for the very first time, who you really are. It’s a mesmerizing novel, one of our Best Books of 2026 So Far, penned by a debut author you don’t want to miss. —Annabel Gutterman, Amazon Editor
If you want a "delicious" on-campus debut
It feels fittingly titillating to call Julia May Jonas’ debut “delicious.” For those lovers of literature—rest assured this book is for you—the name Vladimir sparks visions of inappropriate relationships. In this case, Vladimir is a young novelist who is a new professor on the college campus where an English professor in her late 50s—the narrator—is dealing with the public fallout of her professor husband’s extramarital affairs. The narrator grows obsessed with Vladimir, all while navigating her husband’s scandal and her grown daughter’s broken heart, along with the humility of aging. Imagine Francine Prose’s Blue Angel crossed with E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey, with a dash of AARP Magazine. The result is dark, twisty, and yes—delicious. —Sarah Gelman, Amazon Editor
If you want to journey to a campus ... in hell
Katabasis is literary fantasy at its most spectacular, and I reveled in every sentence. Alice, who is studying Magick at Cambridge, may have accidentally killed her professor. Now she must journey to the depths of hell to get him back because, frankly, she needs his recommendation to make her sacrifices to become a renowned magician worth it. Unfortunately, her friend-turned-rival Peter feels the same and insists on coming with her. What follows is an epic adventure through hell that is filled with madness, humor, and humanity. In the vein of Ninth House and The Magicians, this book is an ode to, and brutal takedown of, academia. I felt transported back to college, being challenged and exposed to new concepts. As Alice and Peter’s descent becomes more unhinged, we see them reckon with the sacrifices they’ve made for the sake of Magick, within themselves, and with each other. Despite taking place in hell, this is ultimately a hopeful story that moved me in ways I wasn’t expecting. One of our Best Books of 2025, it’s destined to become a modern fantasy classic. —Abby Abell, Amazon Editor
If you want to improve your focus on (or off) campus
Our team loved Stolen Focus so much, we named it one of our Best Books of 2022. The fall is the ideal time to reset and optimize study habits (whether you're on campus or off)—and this nonfiction book is filled with life-changing tidbits that you’ll think about every day as you stare at your phone and doom scroll. Johann Hari’s epic journey to ditch his devices (which included a three-month tech detox that I envied) and reclaim his sanity is deeply relatable, at times funny, and truly eye-opening. There’s no shame or blame here, just ideas about how we can better prioritize what’s important and be more present in the moment against the onslaught of alerts, pings, and interruptions that are part of normal life today. —Lindsay Powers, Amazon Editor
