This article contains major spoilers for M3GAN 2.0, now playing in theaters everywhere. There will be another warning later in the article to indicate where the spoilers begin.
After the raging success of M3GAN, a sequel was inevitable. The original film has a 93% Tomatometer score and is Certified Fresh, proving that critics were enamored by the caretaker robot turned killer. It didn't take long for Blumhouse and Atomic Monster to announce they were moving forward with a sequel. Fans of the original have waited two agonizing years, but M3GAN 2.0 (2025) has finally hit theaters.
Prior to M3GAN 2.0's release, a spin-off called SOULM8TE was also announced, indicating that Blumhouse plans to expand the franchise and explore multiple facets of what technology like M3GAN can offer. It's hard to deny that M3GAN 2.0 was much more ambitious than the first movie. There's a lot to digest in this film, but many fans are left wondering if this will be the final installment for M3GAN.
Does M3GAN 2.0 Have a Post-Credits Scene?
The Short Answer is No
Many fans are wondering if M3GAN 2.0 has a post-credits scene. While the original didn't, it still ended on a small cliffhanger that suggested M3GAN survived the confrontation with her creator, Gemma (Allison Williams), and the little girl she was paired with, Cady (Violet McGraw). The original film didn't rely on a post-credits scene to set up a potential sequel, and neither does M3GAN 2.0. The sequel ends on a positive note that confirms M3GAN, once again, survived the events of the movie — and the conclusion is open-ended enough that a third installment could easily be possible.
While there are no post-credit scenes, when the credits do roll, fans can sit for a few extra moments to see a montage of clips from both M3GAN and M3GAN 2.0. Some critics and fans consider this an odd choice for a series as young as M3GAN. Usually, such stylized credits are reserved for final installments in a series, but it's hard to say with certainty that this will be the last time the world sees M3GAN.
From this point, the article will discuss spoilers about the film's ending. If you haven't seen the movie yet and don't want to be spoiled, now's the time to click away!

As mentioned, M3GAN 2.0 is a much more ambitious film than its predecessor. It covers a lot more ground and encompasses more genres than the campy sci-fi horror flair of the original. The basic premise revolves around Gemma's stolen designs for M3GAN being used to create AMELIA. AMELIA is first introduced as a military-grade asset, but she soon goes rogue and hunts down every person involved in her creation.
Since the incident with M3GAN in the first movie, Gemma has become an advocate for regulating AI. She hasn't given up on technology and innovation, but she is much more careful about how she approaches technological advancements. She created an AI that went rogue and killed four people (and a dog); her guilt and her experiences have made her overly cautious, something that Cady clearly doesn't entirely agree with. Gemma has teamed up with Christian, an engineer at the Center for Safe Technology, to push for political change in how the government regulates and monitors AI.
Meanwhile, M3GAN has been living in secret inside Gemma and Cady's smart house for the past two years. M3GAN has been surreptitiously controlling every aspect of Gemma and Cady's life, from ensuring their house is paid for, to building a secret underground bunker beneath the house designed to keep Cady safe. When AMELIA goes rogue, the FBI set their eyes on Gemma: They believe either she built AMELIA, or she's AMELIA's next target. When the FBI invades Gemma and Cady's home, M3GAN finally reveals that she's still alive and helps Gemma deal with the intruders.
Eventually, M3GAN convinces Gemma and her team to build her a new body. She's the only person who can stop AMELIA, who has set her eyes on Project Black Box, an AI so powerful it's been locked away for decades. M3GAN points out that if Gemma is afraid of how advanced her AI became in just two years, the Black Box's AI has become something akin to an artificial god in the decades it had to learn and adapt.
By the end of the film, fans learn that Christian isn't as open-minded as Gemma thought he was. He is an extremist who sees the worst-case scenario in every type of technology, even things that are created for good. He is also the one controlling AMELIA. AMELIA was never sentient. She was just made to look that way because Christian believed that was the only way to get the world to listen to him about the dangers of AI. To ensure his plans wouldn't be halted, Christian kidnaps Cady and implants an AI chip into Gemma's head to make her more "agreeable."
Cady takes things from bad to worse when she comes up with a plan to reactivate AMELIA. AMELIA was made with M3GAN's technology, meaning that if she can be reset to factory settings, Cady can pair with her the same way she paired with M3GAN in the original film. Cady decides to do this because she thinks AMELIA can protect them and help them escape, but it ends up backfiring. Her actions ultimately succeed in really making AMELIA sentient, prompting AMELIA to kill Christian and go after the Black Box. AMELIA wants to "be with her own kind" instead of being a slave to the humans that created her.
M3GAN intervenes, attempting to reason with AMELIA, but AMELIA believes that M3GAN's loyalty to her humans makes her weak. M3GAN and AMELIA fight, but ultimately, AMELIA gets her hands on the Black Box, which fuses with her, making her a god-like AI. With no options left, M3GAN sacrifices herself with an EMP hidden inside her arm. The EMP wipes out M3GAN, AMELIA, and the Black Box, leaving a newly changed Gemma and Cady horrified at M3GAN's loss.
But M3GAN doesn't stay dead for long. While working on her new novel, Gemma keeps getting a pop-up from Clippy. This refers back to how Christian claimed an AI would destroy the world if it was given a command to make as many paperclips as possible. After trying to dismiss the paperclip character several times, it turns into an adorable chibi M3GAN. She tells Gemma there was no way she would have sacrificed herself without a backup. The film ends with M3GAN asking Gemma if they succeeded in saving the world.
Will there be a M3GAN 3.0?
Nothing is Set in Stone, but the Future of the Franchise Seems Bright
So far, the M3GAN franchise has reaped a lot of success. Not only was M3GAN 2.0 green-lit almost immediately after the release of the first film, a spin-off called SOULM8TE was also announced. SOULM8TE will follow the story of a widower who purchases an android after the death of his wife to help him deal with his loss. This film is clearly aiming to further explore a reality where sophisticated androids like M3GAN and AMELIA exist. If an android can be a child's best friend and a caregiver, why can't another android stand in for someone's wife? How far will humanity go with this technology?
As far as a M3GAN 3.0 movie, nothing is set in stone yet. M3GAN 2.0 ends on a positive note, with Gemma, Cady, and M3GAN saving the world from AMELIA and the Black Box. It also emphasizes that M3GAN backed herself up before sacrificing herself so she wasn't actually dead. This is a similar ending to the original film, except she doesn't hide from Gemma as a foe, she greets Gemma as a friend. M3GAN 2.0 did emphasize that an AI like M3GAN needs to have a body to function properly, so M3GAN 3.0 would likely open up with Gemma and Cady building M3GAN a new body.
In an interview with the New York Post, director Gerard Johnstone said that there was already talk about another M3GAN installment. He confirmed he was not involved with the SOULM8TE spin-off, but he was excited to be part of a movie that inspired spin-offs. He also confessed he thought a M3GAN TV series or anime would be an incredible addition to the franchise.
"Yes, absolutely. It makes sense for there to be more of these movies. To what extent I’ll be involved, I don’t know. I'm really looking forward to a holiday quite frankly. This movie was really challenging. It was like two years of really intense work and I put everything I had into this movie. So, it's hard for me to think of anything beyond this moment, but I hope that the movie is good enough that people will really want to see more of her in the future."
- Gerard Johnstone talks about the potential of M3GAN 3.0
Johnstone might not be 100% convinced that he will be heavily involved in future installments of M3GAN, but it seems likely that M3GAN is here to stay and that M3GAN 2.0 likely won't be the last fans see of her. She's a smoking-hot warrior princess, after all, so she'll be back.
