Canadian High Pressure Brings a Taste of Fall to Maryland

Nice Maryland weather continues this week
Nice Maryland weather continues this week 02:52

The Baltimore area and much of Maryland are stepping into a stretch of crisp, refreshing weather this week as Canadian high pressure builds in from the north. It's the kind of pattern that brings cool nights, comfortable afternoons, and plenty of sunshine — more like mid-autumn than early September.

Dry Air and Comfortable Days

Monday's weather set the stage, with dew points across central Maryland dropping into the 40s — about as dry as it gets for this time of year. Baltimore topped out in the low 70s, and similar numbers will hold through much of the week. That dry air also means skies will stay mostly sunny, with only a few passing clouds at times.

Chilly Nights in the Suburbs

Overnight tonight, temperatures will dip into the 40s across much of northern and western Maryland. Places like Westminster, Eldersburg, and Ellicott City could wake up in the mid-40s by dawn Tuesday. The city itself and communities hugging the Chesapeake Bay, like Dundalk and Annapolis, will stay a bit milder, with lows in the mid-50s. Still, it will be the chilliest night we've had since spring.

Midweek Clouds, Breezy Winds

A wave of low pressure offshore will toss some high clouds toward the I-95 corridor Tuesday into Wednesday. That means Baltimore and Annapolis may see periods of filtered sunshine, while southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore could deal with thicker cloud cover. Winds will also turn a bit gusty, especially near the Bay, where gusts of 15 to 20 mph are likely. Even with the breeze, highs hold in the low to mid-70s across the Baltimore area, while the mountains stay in the 60s.

Another Cold Front Thursday

On Thursday, a dry cold front will reinforce the cool pattern. Sunshine dominates, with Baltimore reaching the upper 70s to near 80, and overnight lows once again dipping into the 50s. The front helps lock in a run of gorgeous weather heading into the weekend.

Ravens Home Opener Forecast

Fans heading to M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday can expect ideal football weather for the Ravens' 1 p.m. kickoff. Temperatures will be in the mid-70s at kickoff, warming to around 80 during the game under mostly sunny skies. Breezes will be light, and humidity will stay low — a perfect setup for tailgating and game-day fun in downtown Baltimore.

Weekend Outlook

From western Maryland to the Eastern Shore, the weekend looks outstanding. Highs will stay in the upper 70s to near 80, with cool, crisp mornings in the 50s. It's the kind of early fall preview that makes outdoor plans — from festivals to yard work to Sunday football — much easier to enjoy.
