Early Life

Spragga Benz was born Carlton Errington Grant on May 30, 1969, in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in the McIntyre Villa community of east Kingston, commonly known as Dunkirk, and attended Camperdown High School.

As a young man, Grant was nicknamed "Spaghetti" because of his tall, thin build. The nickname was eventually shortened and altered to "Spragga." The second half of his stage name came from the L.A. Benz sound system, where he became involved with Jamaica's sound-system culture.

Spragga did not initially intend to become a recording artist. Around 1991 or 1992, he accompanied L.A. Benz to a dubplate session involving Buju Banton. When Banton declined to record all of the requested tracks, he jokingly suggested that Spragga voice the remaining ones himself. Spragga improvised lyrics despite having little recording experience, impressing those in the studio and setting his career in motion.

Dancehall Breakthrough

Spragga quickly became an in-demand deejay, recording for prominent Jamaican producers including Winston Riley, Bobby Digital, Steely & Clevie, and others.

Early songs including "Could a Deal," "Girls Hooray," "Jack It Up," and "She Nuh Ready Yet" established him as one of the notable new voices of 1990s dancehall. His debut album, "Jack It Up," was released in 1994.

His growing popularity led to a deal with Capitol Records. The label released "Uncommonly Smooth" in 1995, giving Spragga access to the American market. The album included collaborations with Chevelle Franklyn and Ben E. King.

"Fully Loaded" and International Success

In 2000, Spragga released "Fully Loaded," which became his first album to reach Billboard's reggae chart. The project included appearances by artists including Lady Saw and Foxy Brown.

His relationship with Brown extended beyond music, and the two were briefly engaged. Spragga appeared on her single "Oh Yeah," which reached Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

His biggest crossover hit arrived several years later through Kevin Lyttle's "Turn Me On." Spragga appeared on the widely released version of the song, which became an international smash and reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004.

Over the years, Spragga has also recorded or performed with artists including Stephen Marley, Damian Marley, Julian Marley, Kranium, Konshens, Agent Sasco, Sizzla, and Sean Paul.

"Shottas" and Acting Career

Spragga became known to an entirely different audience through acting.

His signature role was Wayne in "Shottas," the Jamaican crime drama starring Ky-Mani Marley as Biggs. The film follows two childhood friends who become involved in organized crime in Jamaica and Miami. Although filmed earlier in the decade, "Shottas" received a wider U.S. theatrical release in 2006 and developed a sizable cult following.

Spragga's son, Carlton "Carlyle" Grant Jr., appeared in the movie as the younger version of his father's character.

In August 2025, Spragga released "Endeavors," his first album in six years. The project included Sizzla, Tarrus Riley, Briggy Benz, and Cocoa Tea. Cocoa Tea's appearance on "Shoot Down That Drone" was among the veteran reggae singer's final recordings before his death.

Spragga continued developing the project in 2026 with "Endeavors Reloaded," adding collaborators to songs from the original album while continuing to release new music.

Death of His Son and Philanthropy

Spragga experienced a devastating personal loss in August 2008 when his 17-year-old son, Carlton "Carlyle" Grant Jr., was fatally shot by police in Kingston. The circumstances surrounding the shooting were disputed, and the case became a significant public controversy in Jamaica.

The loss had a lasting impact on Spragga's music. He dedicated songs and projects to his son, including material that eventually contributed to "The Journey Chosen."
