Tiger Shark Sneaks Up on Divers Spearfishing Off Western Australia in Close Call

A pair of divers had a close encounter with a tiger shark as they were spearfishing off the coast of rural MacLeod, Western Australia. Jasmine Warneford and Sam Anderson were in the water off the Red Bluff Campsite, near Quobba Station, on April 21 when the shark decided to join their dive. In this video taken by Warneford, the shark can be seen trying to grab the fish attached to the diver's float rope. The shark then turns towards Anderson, seemingly interested in taking a bite out of him. Distracted by the floating dead fish around, the shark decides to turn away after getting within striking distance of Anderson. However, the apex predator then begins to drag the rope away and Warneford along with it. Warneford quickly cuts the float rope, which was holding the pair's fish haul - four fish the tiger shark was likely most interested in eating. "I felt calm the entire time. The shark was after the fish not us. I was more worried for Sam's life not mine," Warneford told Storyful. "Quobba is incredible. The reef is so healthy."
