The best bralettes have been a mainstay in my fellow editors' underwear drawers for years. But, being a girl with a bigger bust, I was certain the non-wired, non-padded lingerie option wasn't for me. Perhaps that's because it was only a few months after receiving my first non-wired training bra that my mother subbed it out for an underwired t-shirt bra offering a lot more support.
But following an in-depth discussion with my colleagues (and industry experts) on their favourite intimates, I have since discovered I've been missing a trick; voluntarily forgoing intense comfort. “Whether you are settling into a chilled Sunday morning in pyjamas or styling an oversized shirt, a bralette is your go-to for all-day comfort,” says Nia Davies, Senior Lingerie Buyer at Boux Avenue.

Free People should be your first port of call this summer if you're keen to embrace the boho trend — and yes, I suggest embracing the aesthetic when it comes to your underwear, too. I don't need to highlight how pretty this option is, but in terms of support, it left me wanting a little more. Yes, this bralette has adjustable straps, but their spaghetti style means they offer virtually no lift. I also found the cups to be a bit shallow, causing spillage at the side and on top. Another option best suited to those with small busts.

The wardrobe essential I wax lyrical about? Stripe & Stare pants, because there really is nothing comfier. But the brand, known for its super breathable, super soft undies, has branched out to offer bralettes, too. Offering light support and finished with a touch of lace, this is yet another option for those less worried about lift and more concerned with aesthetics. However, the adjustable straps and hook-and-eye fastening do allow for a tailored fit. Try as I might to find a flaw with Kim K's fashion brand (in a bid to spare my wallet), I can't. Just like the brand's cotton bras and t-shirt bras, this non-wired, non-padded chest support delivered superb support — even before adjusting the straps, I was surprised by how perky my boobs looked, thanks to that encased elastic underbust seam. Most worthy of praise though is the wide size range — but the many colour options are a close second. While this is a pricier option I still thought it was reasonable, coming in under £40. There are, perhaps, two items Calvin Klein is most commonly associated with: men's boxers and women's bralettes. So, when rounding up the very best, I of course had to throw one of the latter in the mix. Cut in a crop top style, this one offers a little more coverage and thicker straps than others in this edit. In terms of support, I was surprised by how secure I felt — the result of the new iteration of the forever bestseller features adjustable multi-way straps which can also be worn cross back. This was also the most breathable option I dried, effectively keeping me cool and comfortable, even during a mid-May heatwave.

Before embarking on any testing, I had (wrongly) assumed bralettes were exclusively for those with smaller busts. However, Marks & Spencer's, being a seriously reliable lingerie brand, has launched one for us well-endowed women too. Non-padded and non-wired, but fitted with Secret Support technology (AKA hidden bust support), this was the best bolstering option I tried — helped further by the wider, adjustable shoulder straps and hook-and-eye fastening. The one thing that's made me avoid buying a bralette in the past? Personally, I've found that styles that aren't cut with separate cups can have a rather unflattering, merging monoboob effect — loudly pointed out by my mother.

How I test the best bralettes:
Being a functional fashion writer, my working week involves calling in samples from a host of brands to see which styles are worth recommending. For this round-up, I requested a host of unwired, non-padded bralettes, some of which could also count as t-shirt bras, to see which delivered both in terms of style and support.
Each bralette was worn at least three times and was then reviewed against the following criteria:

I also wore each style underneath close-fitting t-shirts, white shirts, and summer dresses to see whether they were noticeable and delivered a flattering lift.
Where I haven't yet had the chance to personally review a style myself, I asked my colleagues for their recommendations and scoured countless customer reviews for points of note. Of course, only the bralettes that impressed all around made it into this edit — and sadly, the following didn't make the cut:
- Marks & Spencer's Flexifit Non Wired Full Cup Bra A-E — It's rare that lingerie from M&S doesn't impress me; however, I'm sad to report that this bralette from the brand's BODY collection, despite being fitted with individual full cups, caused a rather unflattering monoboob. Granted, it was super comfortable, washed well and came in at a great price point (£22), but it offered minimal lift or virtually no rounding effect.
- Out From Under Liv Firecracker Underwire Bra, £26 — Undeniably pretty, but offers virtually no support. Definitely one suited to those with smaller busts, or those less worried about lift and support.
