Every LA Explained tour is built from archival research, architectural history, neighborhood stories, cultural context and the details that usually disappear between the landmarks.

We connect buildings to the people who lived in them, streets to the forces that changed them, and individual neighborhoods to the much larger story of Los Angeles.

The goal is simple: after walking with us, you should never see the city quite the same way again.

Walking Tour FAQs

Who are LA Explained walking tours for?

LA Explained walking tours are designed for curious locals and visitors who want to understand Los Angeles beyond the usual sightseeing checklist. Our guests include architecture lovers, history buffs, film fans, photographers, design enthusiasts, neighborhood obsessives and longtime Angelenos who simply want to see their own city differently. Whether you live here or are visiting LA for the first time, the goal is the same: to connect the buildings, streets, people and stories that made Los Angeles what it is today.

What makes an LA Explained walking tour different?

These are deeply researched, story-driven explorations of Los Angeles history, architecture and culture rather than traditional sightseeing tours. Depending on the neighborhood, a walk might move between landmark architecture, hidden stairways, historic homes, forgotten institutions, Hollywood history, urban development, landscape, design and the people who shaped the city. We’re interested not only in what you’re looking at, but why it is there and what it tells us about Los Angeles.

How long are the tours, and how much walking is involved?

Our routes vary considerably. Most public tours run approximately 90 to 150 minutes, but distance, elevation, number of steps and overall difficulty depend on the neighborhood. Some walks are relatively flat and leisurely; others travel through hillside communities and may include significant stairs, inclines, uneven sidewalks or longer distances. Each individual tour page includes more detailed information about duration, distance and walking level so you can choose the experience that feels right for you.

What should I wear or bring?

Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended. Los Angeles weather can change considerably throughout the day, so we also suggest bringing water, sun protection and a light layer when appropriate. Because every route is different, take a quick look at the individual tour page before booking for any neighborhood-specific walking notes.

Are the tours accessible for guests with mobility concerns?

Accessibility varies by route. Los Angeles is not always particularly cooperative when it comes to hills, stairs and historic sidewalks, and some of our tours are significantly more physically demanding than others. If you have mobility concerns or accessibility questions, email info@laexplained.com before booking. We’re happy to help you determine which tour is likely to be the best fit.

Where do the tours meet, and what is parking like?

Exact meeting-point information, a map link, parking guidance and arrival instructions are provided with your booking confirmation. Because parking conditions vary significantly by neighborhood, we recommend allowing extra time and arriving approximately 10–15 minutes before the scheduled start of your tour.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

Walking-tour tickets are non-refundable, but if your plans change, you still have options. Your reservation may be transferred to another guest, or you may move your booking to another available LA Explained tour date, subject to availability. Just email info@laexplained.com and we’ll be happy to help update your reservation.

Tours begin at the scheduled time, and we cannot guarantee that late arrivals will be able to join the group once the walk is underway.

What should I know about walking-tour conditions and safety?

Exploring Los Angeles on foot means experiencing the city as it actually exists — including hills, stairs, uneven pavement, street crossings, weather, traffic and other conditions that can change from one route or day to another. By booking and participating in a tour, guests acknowledge that walking tours involve ordinary risks associated with moving through an active urban environment and are responsible for determining whether a particular route is appropriate for them.

Our guides will always make reasonable efforts to lead each experience thoughtfully and safely, but guests remain responsible for their own footing, personal belongings and awareness of their surroundings. Route length, steps and difficulty are described in greater detail on each individual tour page, and we encourage you to review that information before booking.

What happens if weather, street conditions or something unexpected affects the route?

Los Angeles has a habit of changing the plan. Construction, street closures, private events, weather, building access and other neighborhood conditions can occasionally require us to adjust a route, sequence or individual stop. When that happens, we’ll make reasonable efforts to preserve the substance and quality of the experience. If LA Explained needs to cancel a tour entirely, guests will be contacted directly with next steps.

Do your tours go inside private homes or buildings?

Unless a tour page specifically says otherwise, private residential architecture is viewed from public streets and sidewalks. Some routes may include publicly accessible landmarks, courtyards, businesses or interiors, but access can vary according to operating hours, private events and conditions on the day of the tour. Part of the fun is learning how much of Los Angeles is hiding in plain sight.

Can I book a private or custom Los Angeles tour?

Absolutely. Most LA Explained walking tours can be arranged privately, and we also create custom Los Angeles experiences for corporate groups, visiting teams, clients, schools, birthdays, celebrations, architecture groups and special outings.

We can work with you around a particular neighborhood, architectural period, piece of Los Angeles history or simply build an interesting afternoon for a group that wants to experience the city together. If you have something specific in mind — or have no idea where to begin — email info@laexplained.com with your approximate group size, preferred date and any interests you’d like us to consider. We’re happy to help plan something special.

How did LA Explained get started?

LA Explained began with a simple obsession: looking more closely at Los Angeles and sharing the stories hiding behind the city people pass every day. What started as an ongoing exploration of LA history, architecture, neighborhoods, photographs and cultural ephemera grew into a community of people who were just as curious about the city as we were.

The walking tours bring that same approach off the screen and into the streets — combining archival research, architecture, neighborhood history and storytelling into experiences you can actually walk through. You can follow the ongoing exploration on Instagram at @laexplained.
