Congratulations to Jeff Richards for being our March Employee Spotlight! Jeff plays an important role as Project Science Coordinator for plant space biology flight and ground-based experiments. He supports hardware development, collaborates with principal investigators, and helps advance research in NASA’s Microgravity Simulation Support Facility (MSSF). Jeff’s work supports meaningful progress in space biology and reflects the standards of our Aetos team. 🔸 What is your role, and which contract are you on through Aetos? – Project Science Coordinator for LASSO II, responsible for developing and delivering science preparation products in support of plant-based pre-flight, in-flight, and ground control experiment campaigns for ISS research. He also serves as the LASSO II contract lead for the MSSF at Kennedy Space Center, overseeing operational coordination and ensuring compliance with facility and project requirements. 🔸 How long have you been with Aetos? – Jeff has been at Kennedy Space Center for 31 years and joined Aetos Systems in April 2023 at the start of the LASSO II contract. 🔸 What is your favorite part of your role? – I interact daily with great teammates to brainstorm and address challenging requests and issues that arise with our experiments. This work involves close collaboration with in-house scientists as well as teams of visiting scientists from across the world, who regularly visit our facilities and utilize our unique hardware. 🔸 What’s been your favorite project or accomplishment in your current role? – Throughout my time as project science coordinator for ISS plant growth experiments, I have been involved in a wide range of fun, challenging, and engaging projects. Choosing a favorite is difficult. However, the LEAF (Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora) project stands out as the most memorable experience of my long career at KSC. 🔸 The best career advice I can give is to always remain open to learning. Embrace new opportunities when they are present to you, even if they push you outside your comfort and knowledge zone. Learning something new can be beneficial not only now, but pays dividends in the future, given the nature of working at KSC. Be patient with co-workers, understanding that they may have other pressing tasks other than your requests, but make timeframes of deliverables manageable, not unobtainable. Always give kudos and thanks to co-workers who have completed a project. A little praise and pats on the back can go a long way. Finally, work is only one aspect of life. Take time to travel extensively, experience different cultures, and discover that happiness comes from family, friends, great coffee, and great food, not material things.
