Opening doors to quality living

About us

On June 11, 1938, the Atlanta Housing (AH) was the first-ever public housing authority established in the U.S. when the City of Atlanta passed a resolution declaring the need for safe, affordable housing for families facing financial difficulty. Under Georgia law, we are commissioned to develop, acquire, lease and operate affordable housing for low-income people and families. We are a leader in transforming public housing and providing affordable communities for families, seniors and the disabled. In 1996, AHA spearheaded the model for mixed-income, mixed-use communities where residents can thrive in quality, healthy living environments and advance to self-sufficiency. AHA is the largest housing agency in Georgia and one of the largest in the nation. We are a real estate development company that serves nearly 50,000 people, including families in 16 mixed-income communities, 13 residential properties (11 senior high-rise buildings and two family communities) and AHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Program participants. Our mission is to provide quality affordable housing in amenity-rich, mixed-income communities for the betterment of the community. The company’s goals are to 1) provide quality living environments 2) promote self-sufficiency and 3) facilitate economic viability. Visit www.atlantahousing.org to learn more about AHA.

  • Alonzo Herndon built a legacy in Atlanta through entrepreneurship, vision and determination. Generations later, his name remains woven into the fabric of this city — and with Legacy at Herndon Square, that story continues. Located in the heart of Atlanta’s Westside, the new community stands on the site of the former Herndon Homes and brings 200 new mixed-income homes to the city, including 170 affordable units and 30 market-rate units. And there’s something special about that. As Atlanta continues to grow — as people come downtown for work, entertainment, major events and everything our city has to offer — the Herndon name will remain part of the landscape. A reminder of where Atlanta has been, who helped shape it and what we’re continuing to build for the generations coming next. Legacy at Herndon Square also represents another step forward in Atlanta Housing’s work to expand housing opportunities and help advance the Mayor’s housing goals for the city. One development at a time, one neighborhood at a time, we’re getting closer. Building Atlanta’s future doesn’t mean leaving its history behind. Sometimes, the best way to honor a legacy is to keep building on it. Welcome home to Legacy at Herndon Square. 💙

  • Home is a place that provides opportunity. When Atlanta City Council Member Wayne Martin was growing up, his family experienced homelessness for several years. During that time, they became recipients of Atlanta Housing’s assistance, giving them the opportunity to move into a stable community with quality schools and a brighter future. We asked Wayne: “What does home make possible for the people you serve?” His answer is a powerful reminder that affordable housing is about far more than four walls, it’s about creating opportunities that can change the trajectory of a family’s life. It’s also a reminder that you never know someone’s story. The faces of affordable housing don’t fit one stereotype. They can grow up to become your neighbor, your coworker, your teacher…or your City Council member. 🎥 Press play to hear Wayne’s story. #atlantahousing #atlantaishome

The group project is working. At Atlanta Housing, partnership isn’t just part of the conversation, it’s part of how we get the work done. As President and CEO Terri Lee shared with Affordable Housing Finance : “One of the most valuable additions to our developer toolkit is the collective commitment of partners who understand that affordable housing is everyone’s responsibility.” That commitment reflects Mayor Andre Dickens’ belief that Atlanta is a group project, and we see the results when public, private, philanthropic and community partners come together around a shared goal. Projects like Overlook at Garson demonstrate what’s possible when we work collectively to expand access to quality, affordable housing for Atlanta families. Terri was recently featured alongside six other affordable housing leaders sharing the tools and strategies making a meaningful difference in their work.
