We’re proud to see DC Water's Rehabilitation of Potomac Interceptor Manhole 31 recognized with a 2026 National Design-Build Merit Award from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). As the Design-Build Team’s engineer-of-record, Brown and Caldwell worked alongside DC Water, Ulliman Schutte Construction, Ramboll, and the broader team to renew this vital asset while maintaining uninterrupted wastewater service and protecting the Potomac River watershed. The progressive design-build approach brought operations, engineering, design, and construction together early to identify risks, evaluate alternatives, and deliver a resilient infrastructure solution that will serve the community for generations to come. Congratulations to the entire team! #designbuild #DBIA #innovation #waterutilities #infrastructure
🏆 DC Water’s Rehabilitation of the Potomac Interceptor in Great Falls, Virginia has earned a 2026 National Design-Build Merit Award. The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) recognized the project in its Water/Wastewater category, placing it among this year’s nationally recognized design-build projects. Built in 1960, this section of pipe sits at the intersection of two major sewers and can convey up to 90 million gallons of wastewater flow per day. With high flows, the need to maintain uninterrupted service, deep-rock construction, and environmentally sensitive surroundings, this project was anything but conventional. The Progressive Design-Build approach united the team, comprised of operations, engineering, design, and construction, to collaboratively develop out-of-the-box solutions that avoided bypass pumping and enabled the complex installation of approximately 500 feet of new pipeline. More than 80 projects were submitted nationwide across 10 categories. As a Merit Award winner, Potomac Interceptor Manhole 31 is now in the running for DBIA’s 2026 National Design-Build Project Excellence Award in the Water/Wastewater category. Congratulations to the team behind this work! 👏
