𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻-𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆: 𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 The City of Dayton Department of Public Works, with the help of “Shine a Light” grant funding from Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson, will oversee the clean-up of six lots along the 3000 and 3100 blocks of Delphos Avenue in Westwood. The properties have repeatedly experienced illegal dumping of materials including construction/demolition debris, tires, vehicles, auto parts, and containers. The clean-up will also remove overgrown vegetation and small debris in the top soil layer. The lots have long been a source of blight in Westwood, which is undergoing a community-powered renewal. The new funding represents Dayton’s second successful Shine a Light application.

Wow, what a wet August! After the month's record rains, you might be wondering where all that water goes. In Dayton, rain runoff flows through the municipal storm water system into area waterways. But litter and debris around storm drains can go with the flow, ending up in rivers and streams.  That's where the Adopt-A-Drain program shows up and says "Not so fast, litter." All it takes is a broom and a few minutes for a volunteer to stop the bad stuff from taking a ride to the river. The City of Dayton Sustainability i-Team—in partnership with Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss' Office and Learn to Earn Dayton—has officially launched the Youth Climate Innovation Challenge! 🎉 This mini grant program is available to young residents between ages 15 and 24 that reside or attend school within the City of Dayton! Applications will close on Friday, October 2nd. Project support workshops will take place at City Hall on September 1st from 4:30pm-6:30pm and virtually on September 12 12:30pm-2:30pm. Introducing 𝗔𝗹𝗺𝗮 𝗦𝗼𝘃𝗲, this month's 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗲. Alma is the business and technical administrator for the City of Dayton Human Relations Council. She leads the HRC's Business and Technical Assistance Division, connecting small and disadvantaged business owners with the tools and City contracting opportunities they need to grow. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗱: The City of Dayton is adding steadily to its fleet of electric vehicles, with 51 currently is use and more planned for future years. The Department of Water currently operates the most EVs, with 27. You may see some of the City's EVs around town; look for the blue and green EV decal.

"Good Works in Dayton" is back for a second installment, featuring Cole Hetman of the Office of the City Manager. Cole recently partnered with the Dayton Police Department to solve a critical safety need for local youth. For six years, the Dayton Police Youth Outdoor Adventures program has served area children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and trauma. To help prevent area drownings, the police department sought to add a water safety component, but lacked the specialized staff to make it happen. Cole, who serves as a swim coach at Centerville High School during his off hours, volunteered his time and expertise. He coordinated a highly successful training session teaching life-saving water skills to 20 young people, many with a fear of water. Collaborative work strengthens the Dayton community.
