Our own Courtney Dean, Regional Director of Operations at Compass Senior Living, was recently featured as an expert source in a new US News & World Report guide to pet-friendly independent living. A few takeaways from the full guide worth knowing if you're a pet parent planning a move: Most communities cap pet weight around 25-30 lbs and limit residents to two pets — always ask about specific breed and size restrictions. Budget beyond the entry fee: many communities charge monthly pet rent plus a refundable deposit. As of May 2026, emotional support animals no longer carry the same federal Fair Housing Act protections as service animals, so they may be subject to a community's standard pet policies. Many communities require a pet care contingency plan — naming someone who can step in for your pet if you're ever hospitalized. Courtney's advice on choosing the right fit: “You’ll want to determine which community is going to be the best fit for you and your pet given your own abilities and needs and your pet’s needs—and plan for the long-term.” Read the full guide: https://lnkd.in/gJ76F-7u
