On the latest episode of the Oncology Nursing Society podcast, Jennifer Frith and Emily Norboge from the Duke Cancer Institute discussed how conversational AI is helping oncology nurses spend less time on administrative work and more time on direct patient care. Our AI Care Manager, Sage, now handles the administrative load that used to sit on top of clinical triage, things like medication refill requests, test result inquiries, billing questions, and appointment scheduling. That leaves triage nurses free to focus on things that actually require their expertise like symptom management. The feedback from triage nurses so far has been impressive: they say it’s helping them to elevate their practice and spend more time doing the clinical work they trained for. Care management is one of the biggest levers health plans and self-insured employers have to control rising costs, but most programs weren't built to scale In a new byline for Employee Benefit News, our CEO and founder Mainul Mondal breaks down why traditional models are hitting a wall, and where AI voice agents can expand capacity without losing the human touch that care management depends on. The numbers tell the story. Health benefit costs per employee have topped $18,500 in 2026, and the pressure is showing up everywhere, including onboarding, where one AI-powered rollout pushed call completion rates from 51% to 85%. Another clinic saw a 40% jump in evening intake volume, freeing up 550 hours for patient coaching instead of paperwork. In clinical AI, accuracy isn't the whole safety story. A response can be factually correct and still create risk, if it's misunderstood, delivered without context, or communicated in a way that asks more of the user than they can act on. At Ellipsis Health, we believe voice AI only holds up when the people who deliver care are the ones evaluating it. This summer, our team is running an online study on the clinical safety of voice-based conversational AI, and we're recruiting clinicians to help shape it. Eligible participants include physicians, pharmacists, mental health professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, registered nurses, and advanced practice providers. A key takeaway from Courtney Henchon at her recent panel at the Northeast Healthcare Innovation Summit is that ambient documentation is just the first stage of AI adoption in healthcare, with the next wave of tools already taking shape. The next generation will provide real time clinical guidance, coordinate care across providers, summarize patient histories, and help people navigate increasingly complex health systems. The panel also pointed to behavioral health as one of the biggest access gaps in the system today, and an area where AI can meaningfully help through earlier detection, risk stratification, and ongoing patient engagement, always alongside human care rather than replacing it. It is a gap we think about often at Ellipsis Health as we build tools to support that work. None of this works without strong governance. Our Chief Nursing Officer Courtney Henchon recently moderated a session at the Northeast Healthcare Innovation Summit on the future of AI in clinical decision making. One theme stood out: AI has not reached the point of making independent diagnoses, especially in complex or ambiguous cases where clinical nuance matters most. The bigger opportunity right now is helping clinicians navigate the sheer volume of medical knowledge and surface insights they might otherwise miss. Dr. Ami Bhatt of the American College of Cardiology summed it up well when she shared, "We're not even at clinical decision support yet. We should call this 'navigating to knowledge.' AI should put the right information in front of clinicians and let them use their clinical acumen." AI works best as an intelligent co-pilot, supporting physician judgment while keeping humans accountable for patient care.
