We have been working in science for nearly a decade, and we’ve seen incredible traction. We’ve funded research to fill critical gaps in basic science, created our own scientific research labs and built the world’s largest single-cell dataset. While each of these efforts has driven discoveries on its own, we believe that bringing them together will unlock the promise of AI-powered biology and drive even greater breakthroughs. That’s where Biohub comes in. Mark and I are committing the vast majority of our philanthropic resources to Biohub — our first of its kind initiative combining frontier AI and frontier biology. As part of this next chapter, we’re thrilled to welcome Alex Rives as our Head of Science, and the EvolutionaryScale team to help us lead this new era of AI-powered biology. Their expertise in building advanced AI models for proteins and genomes will help unlock discoveries that once felt out of reach. We’re building something that doesn’t exist anywhere else—AI-powered tools, datasets, and experimental biology working together to: ✨ Simulate virtual cells and a virtual immune system 💡 Generate new biological insights faster than ever 🚀 Accelerate discoveries that design treatments to change lives Almost 10 years ago, Mark and I announced our mission to help scientists cure or prevent all disease within our children’s lifetime. With Biohub, we’re getting there faster than we ever thought possible.

Today CZI is announcing an unprecedented new scientific initiative to build the future of AI-powered biology. I am joining CZI to lead this initiative as Head of Science, and the EvolutionaryScale team is joining forces with Biohub. This is the first large scale scientific effort to combine frontier AI and frontier biology. I feel an incredible sense of optimism in this moment. There is a path to build predictive models of life that can fundamentally accelerate science, and unlock a new understanding of disease. https://lnkd.in/eF62iqC6

  • We’re thrilled to share that our team is joining Biohub — a community of world-class scientists and engineers building tools to accelerate biomedical discovery. Together, we’ll explore how AI-powered models of biology can help scientists understand and design at the cellular level — from mapping how cells work to predicting how they respond to change. This collaboration represents an exciting step toward harnessing frontier AI and frontier biology to advance human health.

Can your AI design a better plastic-degrading enzyme? We’ll synthesize it, test it in the lab, and publish the results. Introducing the 2025 Protein Engineering Tournament: a global benchmark for AI-guided enzyme design. This year’s challenge: design PETase enzymes, which degrade the type of plastic in bottles. Can AI-guided protein design help solve the climate crisis? Let’s find out! 🧬 Free DNA synthesis + wet lab testing 📊 Quantitative data on enzymatic activity, enzymatic activity at high temperatures, and expression 🏆 $30K in prizes, leaderboard visibility, and publication opportunities All teams receive compute + pretrained ESM models, thanks to our partnership with EvolutionaryScale. Key dates: Registration: Now - Oct 17 Predictive phase: Nov 3 – Dec 23 Generative phase: Jan 5 – April 10 Already confirmed: 🇺🇸 Arnold Lab (Caltech) 🇩🇪 Rostlab (Technical University of Munich) 🇪🇸 AI4PD (Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) 🇳🇱 Aminoverse 🇸🇬 Allozymes 🇩🇰 DTU Biosustain Why it matters: It’s about real-world functional performance. All results are open. This is like CASP, but for protein function. Link to register in the comments! #ProteinEngineering #AIforBiology #ClimateTech #EnzymeDesign
