Earlier today, the TD Charitable Foundation announced it is awarding $10 million to 40 nonprofits through its 20th Anniversary #HousingForEveryone grant program. We’re proud to share that FamilyAid is among this year’s grantees and will receive a $250,000 grant! We were selected for our proven work in preventing housing instability and strengthening long-term housing security for children and parents in Greater Boston, with an approach that truly aligns with this year’s focus on eviction prevention. In the face of significant reductions in safety nets for families experiencing poverty, this grant allows us to continue providing 2-Generation case management, housing stabilization and service navigation to the more than 2,800 kids and parents currently enrolled in the Early Homelessness Intervention and Prevention Program (EHIP) with Boston Public Schools. Thank you to the TD Bank Charitable Foundation for this meaningful support! At United Way, we’ve long-believed that school-housing partnerships are a promising strategy to improve families’ housing stability, well-being, and children’s academic outcomes. Last week, we released new research with the Boston College School of Social Work that provides the most comprehensive evidence to date about the value of school-housing partnerships in helping to prevent family homelessness. The research centered on the Early Homelessness Prevention and Intervention program, a partnership between Boston Public Schools and FamilyAid that was originally launched in 2019 with support from United Way. The research showed: 🏠 Housing stability among participating families increased from 49 percent to 84 percent living in their own homes. 📉 Chronic absenteeism among participating students declined significantly from 61% to 52%. ✅ Parents also reported improvements in physical and mental health, including reduced anxiety and depression. Understanding the services and support networks that keep families housed is more critical than ever as our communities face unprecedented uncertainty and strains on the safety net so many rely on. This research confirms what we’ve seen on the ground in Boston and other gateway cities like Lynn and Lawrence. When schools and housing providers work together to ensure access to essential needs, families can stabilize and children are better supported to succeed. We’re grateful to Gatam N. Yadama, Professor and Dean, Boston College School of Social Work, our President and CEP Marty Martinez, and the national experts who joined us to release the findings, including Abe Fernández, Vice President of Collective Impact and Director of the National Center for Community Schools, Children’s Aid, and Jeff Olivet, Senior Advisor, Initiative on Health and Homelessness, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and former Executive Director, U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness. We were also honored to be joined by State Representative Samantha Montaño and Boston City Councilor Benjamin weber The findings show that these approaches work, and together, we must find ways to scale them with urgency. 10,000+ children and parents. Greater housing stability. Improved academic performance. Thriving kids and parents. These are the outcomes of our Early Homelessness Intervention Program (EHIP) — and last week, we were proud to celebrate them alongside Boston College School of Social Work and United Way of Massachusetts Bay at the unveiling of their groundbreaking six-year study of the program. When families first shared their experiences with us in 2022, initial findings pointed clearly to two urgent needs: food security and service navigation. We took that data seriously. Since then, we've expanded our food security programs and launched dedicated #2Gen Service Navigators to meet families where they are — especially as safety nets continue to shrink. The work is far from over. But the progress is real, and family responsiveness to our caring staff’s expertise is making it possible. 📖 Read the full study: https://bit.ly/3OifWjs
