The Good Fight Comes Home to DOC NYC
From Brooklyn to the big screen - and from heartbreak to hope.
Four months ago, I shared the post below about our little film that could, and today, I can finally announce that our documentary short, The Good Fight: Armen vs. Giuliani, will have its world premiere at DOC NYC this November.
To say this is a dream come true is an understatement; it honestly feels like I manifested this.
The last line of that post read:
“We haven’t had a theatrical screening yet, but we dream of making that happen right here in New York City.”
And now, here we are premiering at the largest documentary festival in the U.S., an Oscar-qualifying one at that.
About the Festival:
DOC NYC is the largest documentary film festival in America, co-founded by Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen, two champions of nonfiction storytelling whose passion and vision have made this festival such a vital platform for filmmakers.
This film began as a way to honor my friend Brian Bob, whom I lost two years ago. Armen, my neighbor and dear friend—and the heart of our film—lost his beloved mother,Haiganoush, and this year, I lost my beautiful mum, Esther.
I am dedicating this film to those we’ve lost, and to the love and grief connections that bind us.
With little to no budget, every person in our dream team poured their heart, time, and creativity into something we can all be proud of. Since that original post about the film, we’ve gone on to win 10 awards, but this will be our first theatrical screening.
Amidst all this, news of the ceasefire has filled my heart with profound relief and renewed hope. May this moment remind us that light can break through, and that every fight for justice, dignity, and love matters.
The Film:
The documentary follows civil rights attorney Armen Merjian, whose decades-long work with Housing Works has transformed countless lives. From wrestling champion to legal warrior, Armen took on Mayor Giuliani in a landmark case and never stopped fighting for NYC’s most vulnerable.
