Congratulations | Anglo American’s Quellaveco Mine Anglo American’s Quellaveco mine in southern Peru has been awarded The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark after completing its first assessment cycle. Situated about 3,000 metres above sea level, the site began production in 2022 and produced its one millionth tonne of copper in 2025. “Congratulations to Quellaveco on successfully completing its first assurance cycle and earning these awards. It’s important to highlight that Quellaveco represents Anglo American’s fourth awarded site, alongside Los Bronces, El Soldado, and Chagres operations in Chile. We look forward to deepening our relationship with companies like Anglo American that want to achieve assured responsible production," said Michèle Brülhart, Executive Director of the Copper Mark.

  • The world is electrifying. And behind every major technology driving this transition is one material that often goes unnoticed: copper. Why? 🔌 Electric vehicles use 2.5–4 times more copper than conventional cars. ☀️ Wind turbines, solar farms, battery storage, and modern electricity grids all rely on large amounts of copper to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity. 🏗️ Building electrification, grid modernization, and AI-powered data centres are increasing the importance of resilient, efficient electrical infrastructure. Yet we rarely talk about the material that makes all of this possible. That's where the International Copper Association (ICA) comes in. We work with industry, policymakers, researchers, and partners to advance the knowledge, standards, and collaboration needed to ensure copper continues enabling a more electrified, resilient, and sustainable future. Because the challenge isn't only producing more clean electricity. It's making sure that electricity can move efficiently, safely, and reliably to where it's needed. The future isn't just electric. It's copper-powered. What role do you think copper will play in the next decade of electrification? Leave a comment below.

  • 📣 Attention ICA Members 📅 Save the Date | ICA Industry Leaders Forum | London | Thursday, 22 October 2026 The copper industry doesn't stand still. Neither do we. The energy transition, digital transformation, and the demands of an increasingly urban global population have placed copper at the center of one of humanity's most urgent discussions. This year's theme, "Copper in Action," is a call to be more assertive in how the world understands copper's value, the resilience of its industry and value chain, and how prepared we are to meet future demand through innovation and responsible production. The ICA Industry Leaders Forum will bring together ICA members, senior industry executives, policymakers, and other key stakeholders for a day of thought-provoking keynotes, engaging panel discussions, and meaningful conversations. Together, we'll explore how copper is strengthening resilience, enabling competitiveness, and accelerating the technologies that will shape tomorrow. Because copper is not just essential to the future. It is already building it. 🕣 Networking Breakfast: 8:30 AM 🎤 Forum Program: 9:00 AM 📍 Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill 📩 Registration details have been sent by email to ICA members. • Today, the European Commission published its proposal to amend the Emissions Trading System (ETS) Directive, setting out its approach to how the EU’s main carbon pricing tool should work over the next decade, from 2030 onwards. The International Copper Association supports strong carbon pricing, along with the necessary conditions, so decarbonization and sustainable industrial growth can go hand in hand in the years ahead. To get closer to this reality, we believe policymakers should focus on: 🔶 Providing stronger incentives for circularity and the production and recovery of critical and strategic raw materials: The ETS is increasingly intertwined with other policies, and there is room (and a strong case) to improve the treatment of activities such as those recovering critical and strategic raw materials like copper. 🔶 Guaranteeing an adequate level of carbon leakage protection: Some European industries are particularly exposed to carbon leakage risk. Protections such as free allocation and indirect cost compensation must remain in place at a level where they remain effective. 🔶 Aligning with industrial decarbonization: The ETS legal framework must be developed taking into account realistic industrial decarbonization pathways, both in relation to the free allowances framework and the emissions reduction trajectory. Getting the ETS framework right over the next decade will be crucial for European industry and the EU’s ability to remain resilient, maintain strategic industrial capacity, and decarbonize. We stand ready to help make it work! 📄 You can access our detailed position paper on the ETS review here: https://lnkd.in/eQW-B_a2 #Copper #ICA #InternationalCopperAssociation #ICAisTheVoiceOfCopper #ETS #CriticalRawMaterials

  • How can the Circular Economy Act strengthen Europe's competitiveness, resilience, and strategic autonomy? This question was at the heart of ICA's recent event, which brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to discuss how Europe can recover more strategic raw materials, strengthen circular value chains, and build a more competitive economy. One message resonated throughout the discussion: Europe needs an all-of-the-above approach. Unlocking the potential of e-waste and other secondary raw materials will be essential, but circularity must go hand in hand with competitive mining, processing, recycling, and strong international partnerships. As Anna-Maria Karjalainen (Head of EU Regulatory Affairs and Deputy Director General, International Copper Association Europe) remarked during the session: 💬 "By facilitating the recovery and recycling of copper, the Circular Economy Act can help strengthen Europe's resilience. Together with measures to support mining and processing, it can secure the strategic material needed for electrification, digitalization and decarbonization.” A big thank you to our distinguished speakers for sharing their insights, including Paulina Dejmek Hack, Macarena Gutierrez, Korrina Hegarty, Daniel Peltonen, and Valeria Botta. ➡️ Swipe through to discover some of the key messages shared by our speakers. 📸 More photos from the event are available here: https://lnkd.in/eBa6X5wN #Copper #ICA #InternationalCopperAssociation #ICAisTheVoiceOfCopper #APPLiA #AtlanticCopper #Boliden #ECOS #Euractiv #CircularEconomyAct #CriticalRawMaterials
