Sometimes, giving back looks like sandy feet, games in the sand, and an afternoon by the shore. Welcoming children from Hope Street Margolis Family Center to the Jonathan Beach Club is a tradition we hold close, and a joyful reflection of what it means to open our doors to the broader Los Angeles community. On September 26, the Jonathan Town Club will host Hope Street’s Champions for Children Dinner in support of the organization’s education, health and family programs throughout Los Angeles. About us
Established in 1894 as a political group Jonathan Club segued into a purely social club shortly after. The Club originally afforded an outlet through which members hosted political candidates, participated in political rallies and gathered for social activities. In 1895, Jonathan Club members determined that the social bond, and not the political one, was what interconnected its members. Jonathan Club was chartered as a “purely social club” by the State of California on September 23, 1895. Many notable Club members (also known as Jonathans) have shaped the destiny of Southern California. Their leadership and innovations reverberate to today. Henry Edward Huntington, a notable Jonathan whose imprint on commutes and socio-economic plans dating back to the early 1900s continues to influence all of us to this day. Jonathans Edward Dickson and Ernest Moore conceived the idea of UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) over lunch in the fall of 1917. Never underestimate the power of lunch at the Club! As Jonathan Club has evolved the defining values, standards of excellence and spirit of camaraderie that originally distinguished the Club have withstood the test of time.

Jonathan Club, a BoardRoom Distinguished Club with ICONIC status, faced a unique challenge: how to engage members with World Cup-themed events in a city where soccer traditionally takes a back seat to football and baseball. The club’s ambitious programming transformed the summer experience. Through interactive soccer activities, specially crafted menu items, branded scarves and a World Cup bracket competition, Jonathan Club turned spectators into participants while building excitement among members and staff. It’s a timely reminder that clubs can create meaningful connections around major global events by committing early, planning boldly and adapting programming as member interest grows. What if community giving could do more than support a worthy cause, what if it could also bring a club community closer together? Jonathan Club, a BoardRoom Distinguished Clubs with ICONIC status, has supported West Coast Care for years, helping the organization reconnect people experiencing homelessness with their families, purpose and a pathway forward. The club’s latest effort paired a $25,000 donation with a hands-on volunteer event where board members, members, staff and families assembled 900 care kits. “We believe supporting our community means more than writing a check,” Jonathan Club president Chip Lightfoot said. “Financial contributions are essential, but volunteering creates personal connections, strengthens our culture of service and demonstrates our commitment in a meaningful way.” It’s a powerful reminder that when club leaders combine financial giving with meaningful participation, community service becomes part of the club’s culture. Great clubs are built around shared experiences. As the world has come together to celebrate the global game, Jonathan Beach Club has embraced the moment with beachside soccer, watch parties and Member programming designed to foster connection. We were delighted to welcome Brian Rowe, UCLA standout and eight-season MLS veteran, to join Members for an afternoon of friendly competition and conversation. Experiences like these continue to bring our community together in meaningful ways.

On the sand at the Jonathan Beach Club, our Board of Directors and their families came together to assemble 900 essential care kits for our longtime community partner, West Coast Care. The day also marked a $25,000 investment from Jonathan Club, presented by outgoing Board President John Iino, to further their mission in helping individuals and families experiencing homelessness find a path home. A meaningful reminder of what can be accomplished when people come together in service of others.

This Sunday marks the end of my term as President of the Jonathan Club. As I reflect on the past year, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve a membership that brings together people from many different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. Rather than dwelling on our differences this year, I chose to focus on what unites us: our mission to enrich the lives of our members and our shared values of Family, Community, Wellness, Respect, and Passion. Those values remind us that while we may not always see things the same way, we are connected by something larger than ourselves. They are what make the Jonathan Club such a special place. This year was especially meaningful to me as the first Asian American President in the Club’s 130-year history. Thirty-one years ago, when I became a member, there were only a handful of Asian American members. To have the opportunity to serve in this role has been both humbling and deeply personal. For me, this journey has always been about more than a title or a position. It has been about family. It has been about opportunity. And it has been about community. Serving as President has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. Thank you to our members, Board of Directors, committee leaders, volunteers, and exceptional management and staff for your trust, friendship, and support. It has been an honor to serve. 🙏🏽

Home from the 2026 MASTERMIND Forum in Dublin. Huge thanks to David V Smith and the Club Leaders Forum. Also special thanks to Stephen’s Green Club, Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club, and Kildare Street & University Club for hosting us. Connecting with leaders from the Platinum Clubs of the World was inspiring. I’m energized by the focus on governance, culture, innovation and longevity, and ready to bring new ideas back to Jonathan Club.
