A New Era for Louisiana’s Gateway to Global Commerce ⚓️ The numbers are official. According to the 2026 Port Performance Freight Statistics Annual Report released on January 29, the Louisiana Gateway Port (LGP) has reached a historic milestone in national and regional standings. We are proud to announce our new rankings: 🏆 #13 National Port (Total Tonnage) 🏆 #4 on the Mississippi River 🏆 #2 National Dry Bulk Port With a record-breaking 50.5 million short tons moved, LGP has officially overtaken several long-established hubs to become the 4th largest port on the Mississippi. This rise isn't just about volume—it’s about the "Blue-Water Advantage." Sitting at the mouth of the river with a 50-foot channel and zero air-draft restrictions, we provide the most efficient, unrestricted path for the world’s largest vessels to reach the American heartland. From the surge in LNG energy exports to our sustained leadership in agribulk, the data confirms that the economic center of gravity is shifting to the Gateway. As we execute our $29B master plan, we remain committed to fueling Louisiana’s economy, supporting over 32,000 jobs, and securing our place as a Top 5 national hub by 2030. Louisiana Gateway Port: We Turn Bigger Ships Faster
About us
The Louisiana Gateway Port, located at the mouth of the Mississippi River, is a leading maritime hub along the Gulf Coast. With its strategic location on the Mississippi River, the Port plays a pivotal role in fostering economic growth, supporting local industries, and connecting communities. Equipped with modern terminals and facilities, the Port handles a diverse range of cargo and implements environmentally sustainable practices. Located at the closest point on the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico, the Port boasts several key advantages: • No air draft issues and a river depth of 50+ feet • Rail connectivity and ample available land in a highly rural area • A privately funded, planned container terminal with APM, offering deep water access without height or navigational restrictions These features ensure that Louisiana will be a gateway for larger, more efficient vessels, enhancing the state's role in global trade. Established in 1954, the Port provides water access to more than 30 states and is perfectly positioned to serve global markets for oil, gas, grain, coal, liquefied natural gas (LNG), chemicals, and more. The Port also owns and operates the ferry system in Plaquemines, an essential connectivity asset. Through its operations, the Port generates employment opportunities, stimulates regional economic diversification, and fuels long-term prosperity.
