Lumos is in Geneva this week as an Inter-Governmental Working Group (IGWG) develops a new international treaty on the right to education (Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child). Too often, children with disabilities or from complex backgrounds are placed into in residential educational settings with the promise of access to schooling. Aisling Ledwith, Lumos Senior Advocacy and Campaigns Officer, will be speaking before delegates, members and child members of the IGWG with a call for two key actions: 1. To define the right to education as the right to inclusive education, to ensure that all children can be included. 2. To recognise the importance of children's right to grow up in safe and loving families and ensure that children are able to access safe and inclusive education while remaining in the care of their families. Children should never have to be removed from their families to secure an education. Alongside these donations, the single-voice audiobooks narrated by Stephen Fry and Jim Dale will be available to all from 1st September throughout the months of September and October.
