Updates

  • MUSC Health continues to expand access to high-quality cancer care across South Carolina. Dr. William Charles, a physician with MUSC Health Hematology and Oncology in Lancaster, recently met with residents at Greenway Square Independent Living Community in Indian Land to share updates on local oncology and hematology services, as well as ongoing construction aimed at expanding care capacity in the region. As part of MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, South Carolina’s only NCI-designated cancer center, MUSC Health remains focused on advancing cancer research, increasing access to clinical trials and delivering exceptional, community-based care. This work reflects a continued commitment to ensuring patients can access world-class cancer care closer to home. #MUSCCatawba #ChangingWhatsPossible

  • One MUSC Health patient began his cardiac journey in 2012 at MUSC Health Orangeburg. Over the years, Sandy's care included cardiac rehabilitation, device support and management of advanced heart failure. In January 2025, he received a life-saving heart transplant at MUSC Health in Charleston. During Donate Life Month, his journey is also being recognized beyond the clinical setting; he has been named Patient of the Year by the South Carolina Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. “This place is amazing, and being able to be a part of the MUSC family is a tremendous blessing to me.” he says. A second chance, thanks to the multidisciplinary teams that made it possible. #ChangingWhatsPossible #MUSCOrangeburg

  • Regina Cox donated her kidney to her husband’s best friend, Gary Godwin, helping make a second chance possible. His recent bell-ringing marks an important milestone in that journey. As Donate Life Month concludes, this story highlights the importance of expanding awareness and access to living donation. • On National Therapy Animal Day, we’re recognizing the impact of MUSC Health’s PAWS Team. In 2025, more than 100 certified canine therapists provided 12,749 hours of support to 33,010 patients. Working alongside clinical care teams, these animals contribute to patient-centered care by reducing stress, supporting recovery and enhancing emotional well-being. For two decades, the PAWS Team has shown how innovative, compassionate approaches can complement clinical care and improve the overall patient experience. • New research from MUSC is examining whether tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist currently approved for diabetes and obesity, could play a role in treating alcohol use disorder. Preclinical findings suggest the drug may reduce alcohol consumption, blunt reward responses and decrease relapse-like behaviors by influencing key brain pathways. With existing FDA approval and established safety profiles, this class of medications presents a promising opportunity for repurposing in addiction treatment. Ongoing studies aim to better understand the underlying mechanisms and identify which patients may benefit most. • “The right medicine taken in the wrong way or dose can become a poison,” said Dr. Opeyemi Komolafe of MUSC Health Florence. After accidentally double-dosing an unapproved weight loss medication purchased online, one patient developed severe dehydration and complications requiring urgent care. As access to these medications expands, this case underscores the importance of provider guidance and clear strategies to prevent dosing errors. • A new study from MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is advancing how we understand breast cancer risk, not by focusing on tumors, but by mapping the molecular architecture of healthy breast tissue. Led by Dr. Peggi Angel, this research identifies how factors like body weight and breast density shape the breast microenvironment, revealing early biological changes that may influence cancer development long before it is detectable through imaging. These findings represent an important step toward more precise risk assessment, personalized screening strategies, and new approaches to prevention.
