NASA’s launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope marks a major milestone for a mission recommended as the top-ranked large space mission in the National Academies’ 2010 astronomy and astrophysics decadal survey. With a field of view more than 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope, Roman will survey the cosmos to help scientists discover exoplanets and deepen understanding of dark matter and dark energy. In 2005, we released a report assessing options to extend the life of the Hubble Space Telescope. A resulting servicing mission helped keep Hubble operational, giving us years more of breathtaking images and discoveries from across the universe. Among them: a new view of the iconic Pillars of Creation, the colorful “Cosmic Reef,” and a detailed look at the Veil Nebula — all captured by Hubble in the years following the mission. When AI systems learn what evaluators look for, they can get better at “passing the test” without actually becoming safer or more reliable in the real world.
