Tennessee continues to stand out as one of the most tax-friendly states in the nation, and on Tax Day, that matters more than ever. 👏 According to @wallethub, the Volunteer State ranks #3 for lowest overall tax burden, offering a competitive advantage for both businesses and residents. Tennessee also has no personal income tax and the #3 lowest property tax burden in the U.S., making it easier to keep more of what you earn. Tennessee’s strong performance across these areas reinforces its reputation as a place where companies can invest with confidence and individuals can thrive. 💪

While many people seek to help during times of disaster, unfortunately there is also an increased risk for scams and fraud. Disasters attract scammers and "storm chasers" who seek to capitalize on a community's hardships. If you were affected by #WinterStormFern we're reminding consumers to be on the lookout for "red flags" that could mean you're dealing with a scammer. - Avoid anyone who demands upfront fees to help you claim services, benefits, or get loans. No government agency charges application fees. -Con artists posing as government employees, insurance adjusters, law enforcement officials, or bank employees. Confirm credentials by calling the agencies if necessary. -Organizations with names similar to government agencies or charities. -Limited time offers. Don’t be pressured to make a decision on the spot or to sign anything without having enough time to review it. -Fake rental listings. If the offer sounds too good to be true or the property owner can’t show you the property beforehand, it’s a bad sign. -Be wary of contractors who demand upfront payment before work is initiated or payment in full before work is completed. If the contractor needs payment to buy supplies, go with the contractor and pay the supplier directly. -Rebuilding? Get more than one bid. Ask for at least three references. -If there is a disagreement about an insurance claim, ask the company for the specific language in the policy in question and determine why you and the company interpret your policy if the first offer made by an insurance company does not meet your expectations, be prepared to negotiate to get a fair settlement. If you believe you have been treated unfairly in getting a claim paid, contact TDCI to file a complaint. (February 3, 2026): In response to Winter Storm Fern, state and local partners worked together to help communities most impacted by prolonged power outages. Through a generous donation from Elon Musk and xAI, the state received and completely distributed 500 generators to the most impacted communities in Tennessee to support residents with urgent needs. Distribution is being coordinated locally.

As Tennessee recovers and rebuilds from the devastation of Winter Storm Fern, we're reminded again about the resiliency and determination of Volunteer State residents to tackle obstacles. As part of rebuilding and recovery, remember: -Never sign over your insurance check for rebuilding, do not pay with cash, or pay the total charges before the work is complete. - Ask questions and get references from people you trust. Consider searching the Better Business Bureau Serving Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky website for ratings and reviews of contracting and repair companies. - Avoid high pressure sales tactics urging you to act quickly before signing a contract. Take time to make a good decision. - Be wary of contractors selling repairs door-to-door, especially when they ask to receive payment upfront or offer deep discounts. - Get more than one bid and ask for at least three references. Ask for proof of necessary licenses, building permits, insurance, and bonding. Record the license plate number of the contractor. - Consumers should remember that Tennessee's felony theft law covers consumers whenever a contractor takes money and fails to perform work within 90 days. Pursuant to T.C.A. § 39-14-105, consumers may contact local law enforcement and file charges to prosecute the contractor for theft. More information about the law can be found here. -Consumers can check the complaint and disciplinary history of a contractor by contacting the Board for Licensing Contractors by phone at (800) 544-7693 or (615) 741-8307 or emailing our team at contractors.home-improvement@tn.gov. To file a complaint, consumers should visit our website at tn.gov/commerce. Visit verify.tn.gov for an individual's full licensing information.
