We’re in The New York Times. Last week’s executive orders sparked confusion between “ending cashless bail” and “ending cash bail.” Our op-ed clears it up - and explains what’s really at stake for our justice system and our society. https://lnkd.in/grmeFtPv #SafetyNotWealth #FreedomShouldBeFree

We pay bail for free and advocate for pretrial policies that treat everyone fairly, no matter how much money they have.
About us
The Bail Project, Inc. is a nonprofit organization designed to combat mass incarceration by disrupting the money bail system ‒ one person at a time. We believe that paying bail for someone in need is an act of resistance against a system that criminalizes race and poverty and an act of solidarity with local communities and movements for decarceration. Over the next five years, The Bail Project will open dozens sites in high-need jurisdictions with the goal of paying bail for tens of thousands of low-income Americans, all while collecting stories and data that prove money bail is not necessary to ensure people return to court. We won’t stop until meaningful change is achieved and the presumption of innocence is no longer for sale.

This new article by The Guardian unpacks President Donald Trump’s executive orders aiming to “end cashless bail” – highlighting his false argument that pretrial reform leads to more crime. As Jeremy Cherson, Director of Communications at The Bail Project, states: “The data is clear that bail reform has not led to increased crime. While the president is right that the current system is broken, he is wrong about the solution.” Read it here: https://lnkd.in/g6T3jcXn

Executive orders signed yesterday aim to roll back bail reform nationwide by “ending cashless bail.” Our CEO, David Gaspar, responds with the truth: safety – not wealth – must guide pretrial justice. #EndCashBail #SafetyNotWealth

Yesterday, President Trump signed executive orders intending to roll back bail reform in D.C. and nationwide. Here’s the truth: real bail reform keeps us all safe. It ensures release decisions are based on safety, not the size of someone’s bank account. Our new explainer, How Real Bail Reform Creates a Safer America, breaks down the facts, the evidence, and the bipartisan support behind reform. Read it at https://lnkd.in/gsbUsYBm

What happens to your dog when you’re arrested? Many of our clients risk losing their jobs, their homes, and custody of their children while in jail before ever going to court. For Sherry, she lost her 14-year-old Shih Tzu, Onyx. Shelters are often forced to classify pets as abandoned without knowing how long a person’s case will go on for or whether they are likely to be released. Pets adopted in this way could be lost to their original owners forever – just like Onyx was. Read Sherry’s full story at: bailproject.org/sherry-ga #NationalDogDay #BailReform

Today, President Trump signed two executive orders to eliminate commonsense cashless bail systems in DC and nationwide – reforms ensuring people aren’t jailed pretrial simply for lack of money. The data shows that rolling back this system won’t make communities safer. It will take away the presumption of innocence for anyone who cannot pay, turning freedom before trial into a privilege of wealth. Even more alarming, the president has threatened to withhold money from any jurisdiction nationwide that has implemented reforms that restrict the use of cash bail. As our CEO David Gaspar said: “Efforts to expand pretrial detention or restrict so-called ‘cashless bail’ are dangerous, counterproductive, and out of step with the evidence.” Read his full statement here: https://lnkd.in/gEPQzrJB #FreedomShouldBeFree #SafetyNotWealth

The number of incarcerated women in America is skyrocketing – increasing more than 700% between 1970 and 2019. Many are held in jail simply because they cannot afford bail, not because of evidence that they pose a risk or because they’ve been found guilty of a crime. They need our help. Join us at bailproject.org.

What do the U.S. and the Philippines have in common? They’re the only two countries in the world that have a for-profit bail system. The cash bail system exacerbates inequalities and unfairly penalizes working class individuals. And the for-profit bail bond industry preys on people further. That’s why most countries don’t allow it. Learn more at bailproject.org.
