How do you better align learning with business goals? Where can AI create real value? How do you scale learning and demonstrate its impact? These are the kinds of questions you’ll dig into at the Training Industry Strategy Summit. Each workshop starts with a real strategic challenge and gives you the opportunity to learn from experienced L&D leaders, discuss ideas with your peers and determine how to apply them within your own organization. And because each session connects back to the road map you’re building, what you learn doesn’t stay in your notes. It becomes part of your strategy. 50% of L&D professionals aspire to become a CLO. Less than 1% hold the title. Amy DuVernet, Ph.D., CPTM has studied that gap closely as a leader at Training Industry, Inc., and she doesn't sugarcoat her conclusions: the supply constraints are real. However, a lot of the gap comes from aspiring leaders misunderstanding what the CLO job actually entails, or not seeing adjacent career opportunities. To be clear: the CLO's job isn't running learning programs. It's about building capabilities that help organizations achieve critical performance outcomes. In practice, this means understanding what roles and skills truly move the needle, influencing a broad range of stakeholders to build alignment around where learning should focus, and making a compelling business case for investment priorities. Training Industry, Inc.'s research consistently identifies three critical capabilities for top learning leaders: enterprise-level perspective, executive presence, and the ability to lead and communicate as a business leader. Most practitioners haven't developed these skills deliberately because they've spent their careers developing everyone else. Amy and her team at Training Industry built the Senior Leaders Program to change that — a five-month cohort experience where participants build critical skills through structured practice, AI-powered feedback, and peer learning alongside people pursuing the same career goals. Presence, perspective, and enterprise thinking aren't mastered in a single training event. They are developed through exposure, practice and reflection over time. One thing Amy surfaced that's easy to underestimate: some of the most critical professional development experiences for aspiring leaders happen outside structured learning programs — e.g., a lateral move to a role with new responsibilities, or a stint working with a supplier, where you see how training functions operate across different industries and organizations in a way that's impossible to grasp from inside one company. Despite the scarcity of open CLO seats, Amy's message is clear: there are many opportunities to advance as a talent leader, so don't wait for an open seat in your organization to start working on your professional development. 🎧 Link to the episode in comments.
