Bret Henning liked thisBret Henning liked thisA startup gets acquired for $50M. The buyer walks away 3 weeks later. Why? They skipped technical due diligence. Here's the checklist that prevents those disasters: → Code Quality Assessment Clean code isn't optional. Messy code costs millions in refactoring. → Architecture Review Criteria Does the system scale? Or does it break at 10,000 users? → Security Audit Requirements One vulnerability exposes everything. Audit before you sign. → Scalability Evaluation Growth kills weak infrastructure. Test the limits now. → Technical Debt Analysis Hidden debt becomes your problem. Quantify it early. → Team Capability Review The team built it. Do they understand what they built? → IP Ownership Verification Who owns the code? Verify every line, every license. → Infrastructure Assessment Cloud costs, server dependencies, uptime history. All of it matters. → Vendor Dependencies Third-party tools control your fate. Know what breaks if they leave. → Risk Mitigation Plan What breaks first? Have the plan before the crisis hits. Technical due diligence isn't paperwork. It's the difference between a smart acquisition and a $50M mistake. 🔄 Repost this if you've seen deals collapse from skipped tech reviews. ➡️ Follow Jegan for insights on building and evaluating technical systems.

Bret Henning liked thisBret Henning liked thisAfter much reflection, I’m sharing that I have retired from Alexandria Real Estate Equities. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been part of an organization that sits at the intersection of real estate, science, and innovation. What made the experience truly special, however, were the people. I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to Joel Marcus and the Board of Directors for taking a chance 15 years ago on a developer with a well-known penchant for demolishing buildings. I hope the life science campuses that rose out of the rubble were worth all the trouble. Your trust and long-term conviction made it possible to do meaningful, lasting work. To my dear friends and colleagues—Peter Moglia, Hunter Kass, Hart Cole, Hallie Kuhn, Steve Van Soelen, Jesse Nelson—and to all the Alexandrians at large: thank you. Your professionalism, integrity, humor, and friendship made the journey meaningful and memorable. Working alongside such talented and committed people has been a genuine honor. I also want to express my deep affection and appreciation for Michael Boss and the entire San Diego team. Your hard work, diligence, and shared commitment helped change the face of San Diego real estate. Watching that work take shape alongside such a dedicated group was a true privilege. I will miss the heck out of all of you—but I won’t miss approving expense reports! I also want to acknowledge the special place in my heart reserved for Bret Gossett—my partner, who has been a dear friend for more than 20 years. He joined me on the mind-numbing adventure that began when we sold the assets of Veralliance Properties to Alexandria. You are truly one of one, and I could not have asked for a better leader by my side. Thank you to the numerous consultants, designers, builders, and operators who gave their utmost to deliver the very best to Alexandria—an icon in the REIT universe. Thank you for your passionate service. As I step into retirement, I’m looking forward to more family time, more me time, more tennis (ugh that backhand volley), and seeing how I can contribute to a more resilient community and America. With love and admiration, Daniel J. Ryan

Bret Henning liked thisBret Henning liked thisI am nearing a major milestone in my retirement engineering project: ASA EmulatR, a high-fidelity Alpha AXP / EV6 emulator with the long-term goal of running SRM firmware and operating systems like OpenVMS, Tru64, and Linux. The design has focused on SMP support from the start (since April 2025) and very high performance on Qt. At this stage, I have exceeded my performance objective, and the system has 19 core subsystems completed and integrated. This week I got SRM firmware loading + verification working, staged multi-CPU bring-up, and completed a high-performance asynchronous logging system with an optional instruction-level execution trace (useful for short "transaction" captures and possible post-mortem replay). It has been a fun blend of CPU micro-architecture, SMP, memory systems, firmware bring-up, and performance engineering. Boot-time init is now about 170 ms, including 32 GB sparse RAM backing (ES40-class is documented up to 32 GB; the emulator architecture is being built to scale beyond that for future targets). Next up: wiring the CPU execution path into the SRM entry point and chasing the first SRM console prompt: ">>>". After SRM comes bootstrapping OpenVMS/Tru64/Linux and expanding device coverage. If you worked on Alpha, SRM, or OpenVMS, I would love to compare notes. #SystemsProgramming #Emulation #Virtualization #CPlusPlus #Qt #OperatingSystems #LowLevel #RetroComputing #OpenVMS #AlphaAXP

I keep seeing teams schedule meetings just to ask: “Where do we store that?” “Who owns this system?” “Do we have a complete audit trail?” “Has anyone reviewed the access list?” When compliance depends on meetings, it stops being a system and becomes a memory test. Good compliance should survive vacations, turnover, and busy seasons. Not because people work harder — but because the environment is designed to support them. #DataIntegrity #LabOperations #PharmaManufacturing #AIinRegulatedIndustries #ComplianceAutomation #QualityManagement

Another excercize in AI training . EQO — Assumption Auditor System(AAS) Most failures aren’t analytical. They’re structural. EQO audits the question before reasoning executes. It checks for: Hidden premises Undefined variables Domain bleed Category errors If the framing fails, downstream intelligence compounds the error. Use it on your own questions. Watch how many “clear” problems aren’t actually well-formed. Cleaner inputs → higher signal fidelity → better decisions. Gate the premise. Then compute. #AI #SystemsThinking #DecisionQuality #EpistemicHygiene https://lnkd.in/eMYrP6ki

IQVIA Laboratories had options across California and beyond. What kept them in the Santa Clarita Valley was a business environment that could support complex operations, streamline permitting, and deliver long-term confidence within one of Southern California’s most robust and growing life sciences hubs. The result: ✔️ 350 highly skilled jobs retained ✔️ Consolidation into a state-of-the-art facility ✔️ A faster, lower-friction path to expansion This is what business retention looks like when a region is built for performance. 📄Read the IQVIA case study: https://bit.ly/4rQUu3d #SiteSelection #BusinessRetention #LifeSciences #CommercialRealEstate #EconomicDevelopment #SantaClaritaValley

An inspector asked: "This monitoring visit was 42 days late. Can you explain why?" The sponsor pulled up their CRO reports. 97% completion. Long pause. The visit had been rescheduled three times. CRA conflict, site availability, holiday. It eventually got done. The dashboard showed "complete." Everyone moved on. But the inspector didn't care that it was eventually completed. They wanted to know whether the 42-day delay was a conscious, documented decision—or something that just happened. The sponsor had completion data. They didn't have oversight documentation. Risk was sitting in the data the whole time. Just not in a way anyone could see without digging. By the time an inspector asks about monitoring compliance, the problem isn't the dashboard. It's the assumptions behind it. Green metrics assume: - Completion equals compliance - On-time once means on-time always - Schedules don't drift unless someone flags it Inspectors look for patterns, gaps, and judgment. Not just completion percentages. If an inspector retraced your monitoring history today, could you explain: - Why visits happened when they did? - Why some were late and others weren't? - How enrollment velocity influenced monitoring frequency? Oversight isn't about proving work was done. It's about proving risk was understood and managed before it mattered. How would your monitoring data hold up under that lens?

One vendor gap. One inspection finding. One failed audit. FDA, EMA, GDPR, and NIS2 now demand continuous oversight of every CRO, CMO, cloud provider, and AI partner. Annual assessments aren't enough. How to Assess AI-Enabled Vendors in Regulated Environments CROs with AI platforms. Cloud providers running ML models. Generative AI tools in clinical workflows. Traditional TPRM frameworks weren't built for this. USDM's new white paper includes a step-by-step approach to evaluating AI vendors across data, model, and usage risks—aligned with FDA expectations, and shows how one global pharma eliminated their assessment backlog and passed inspection with zero vendor-related findings. Executive IT leadership for biotech. Many biotech companies rely on MSPs to deliver day‑to‑day IT execution. Systems run, tickets get closed, and work moves forward. What’s often missing is executive ownership of IT — someone accountable for strategy, governance, risk, and alignment to the business and scientific mission. Through JCL Tech Solutions, I serve as a client‑side Head of IT for biotech organizations, providing executive ownership of technology while MSPs continue to handle execution. When IT has leadership, execution becomes clearer, more predictable, and better aligned to what the business is trying to achieve. #Biotech #ITLeadership #ExecutiveOwnership #FractionalHeadOfIT #Governance

Is GMP Annex 11 finally catching up? Over the last decade, GLP and GCP guidelines have set the standard for data security, cloud vendor oversight, and risk-based validation. Keeping current and reflective of the real-world risks of the evolving industry. Meantime, GMP Annex 11 has lagged behind and remained stuck in 2011. What else was around in 2011? 📺Game of Thrones first season premiered on HBO 🎶Adele released her album 21 📱The iPhone 4 was the "must have" device Feel like a long time ago? In a world where technology and risks evolve rapidly, regulations must keep pace. The new draft revision of Annex 11 is a welcome and necessary update, finally aligning with the standards that GLP and GCP have upheld for a while now. But let's not forget that we can always learn a lot by listening to our colleagues across the other GxPs. 🔍 The question now is: Where else can we look to drive best practices - before the regulations play catch-up? #GMP #Annex11 #GLP #GCP #CSV #Regulations #GxP #Quality #QA

Quote of the Week: "We show that state-of-the-art LRMs (e.g., o3-mini, DeepSeek-R1, Claude-3.7-Sonnet-Thinking) still fail to develop generalizable problem-solving capabilities, with accuracy ultimately collapsing to zero beyond certain complexities across different environments." (Parshin Shojaee). This paper, published by Apple, measures with scientific precision the Elephant in the Room: the limitations of current Large Reasoning Models (LRM) are fundamental. LRM's fail to develop generalizable reasoning capabilities beyond certain complexity thresholds. They show inefficient overthinking on simpler problems and complete failure on complex ones. Cutting through the AI-hype means: understanding that the fundamental barriers to generalizable reasoning are not solved by scaling computing power.
