Our Suffolk Sustainability team is proud to partner with @UMass Amherst on the new Sustainable Engineering Laboratories (SEL), a groundbreaking facility designed to advance climate solutions, accelerate energy innovation and shape the clean energy workforce of the future. Sustainability is built into every aspect of the project's design and construction. Embodied carbon reduction is achieved through innovative materials like dowel-laminated timber, low-carbon insulation, and timber curtainwalls, each selected for durability and reuse. The reuse of ceiling materials alone diverted over 700 metric tons of construction waste and saved nearly 14 metric tons of carbon. In a rare but increasingly necessary move, the facility was designed explicitly for disassembly and reuse, a practice known as Design for Deconstruction, another example of how the SEL is a powerful example of circular, low-carbon construction in action.

Great insights at the DBIA NYC Metro Region discussion on the evolution of the design-build delivery method, specifically architect lead design-build. Bidding and buy-out considerations such as logistics, constructability, and drawing conflicts can be efficiently addressed with DB, increasing value and quality. Construction Dive published an article about Live Dimensions, a proprietary software tool that uses AI to track steel progress on projects, from design through fabrication to final construction. Suffolk New York Director of Digital Engineering Denis Leff developed the solution. The article explores how Suffolk's South Shore University Hospital Pavilion Core and Shell project has leveraged this solution to streamline steel tracking and prevent costly delays by eliminating manual Excel spreadsheets and traditional tracking software.

BOMA New York member Empire State Realty Trust has secured a new lease with engineering and development consulting firm Mott MacDonald, which will occupy 25,372 square feet at the Empire State Building. The lease marks the firm’s second Manhattan office. This deal adds to recent leasing activity in the historic building, including agreements with the Big East Conference and Workday.
