Devin Wills reposted thisYou want premium service, perfect schedules, zero headaches—and then ask your best contractor to match the guy who can barely answer his fucking phone. This is becoming one of the biggest problems in construction. Everyone wants the best. The best crews. The best communication. The best schedule. The best quality. The fastest service. Someone who answers when shit hits the fan. Someone who stands behind their work years after the check clears. Then the bids come in and suddenly the entire conversation becomes: “This guy is cheaper. Can you match him?” Maybe. But are you actually comparing the same thing? Because the lowest number on a spreadsheet doesn’t tell you: Whether they’ll show up. Whether they’ll have enough manpower. Whether the work will be done correctly. Whether they’ll fix mistakes. Whether they’ll answer warranty calls. Whether they’ll help your superintendent solve a problem instead of becoming another problem. Or whether they’ll even be around two years from now. I understand the pressure. Margins are tight. Financing is expensive. Inventory needs to move. Every company is looking for places to save money. You should negotiate with your contractors. But there’s a massive difference between negotiating and creating a race to the bottom. Continuously forcing great trade partners to match mediocre companies eventually changes what those great companies are capable of giving you. They can’t pay premium labor with bottom-of-the-market pricing. They can’t dedicate unlimited resources to an account with no margin. They can’t constantly prioritize the customer who treats every project like another opportunity to replace them. That’s just reality. The best contractor relationships I’ve seen work differently. Instead of: “Match this price.” The conversation becomes: “We need to save money. How can we figure this out together?” Now you’re partners. Maybe you change products. Maybe you improve scheduling. Maybe you consolidate purchasing. Maybe you reduce waste. Maybe the contractor gives up some margin. Maybe both sides make adjustments. You find the savings without destroying the relationship that creates the value in the first place. And here’s the part people underestimate: When you treat a great contractor like a partner, they’ll remember it. When you’re behind schedule, they’ll find a crew. When something goes wrong Friday afternoon, they’ll answer. When you need a favor nobody else wants to touch, they’ll figure it the fuck out. When your back is against the wall, they’ll move mountains for you. Those are the relationships you go to war for. So negotiate hard. Demand great pricing. Hold your contractors accountable. But don’t destroy a $100,000 relationship trying to save $1,000 on a spreadsheet. Devin Wills shared thisI think one of the hardest things to admit is when you’ve lost your way. Not failed. Not lost everything. Just slowly become someone you don’t really recognize anymore. I’ve been there. And when I look at these two pictures, I see a hell of a lot more than a physical transformation. The first picture was taken during a period where I had completely lost myself. I was overwhelmed with business. Constantly stressed. Drinking too much. Not taking care of my body. Then I tore my bicep and spent damn near a year recovering from it. And for most of the last 12 months, I dealt with a level of mental stress and depression that I rarely talked about publicly. Some days I felt like I was absolutely crushing life from the outside… while internally I was just trying to make it through the fucking day. That’s the dangerous thing about losing your way. It doesn’t always look like failure. Sometimes you’re still making money. Still running companies. Still investing. Still taking care of everyone around you. Still smiling in pictures. Meanwhile, you’re fucking miserable. You stop training. You stop doing things you love. You stop taking care of yourself. You tell yourself you’ll fix it when business slows down. After this problem gets solved. After this deal closes. After life gets a little easier. But “later” can turn into years pretty damn quickly. Eventually, I reached a point where enough was enough. I didn’t want another year to disappear like that. And I realized something: You need a purpose bigger than just making more money. For me, part of that purpose became Finn and Kenzie. I want them to grow up seeing a dad who takes care of himself. Who works his ass off, but actually lives too. Who is strong physically and mentally. Who gets knocked down and gets the fuck back up. And yes… I absolutely want them going to school telling everybody: “My daddy is stronger than your daddy and he can beat your dad up.” 😂😂 Priorities. 🤷♂️ But seriously…Finding your way again isn’t one giant decision. It’s hundreds of small ones. Going to the gym when you don’t feel like it. Taking care of your health. Getting outside. Finding hobbies again. Being present with your family. Learning to put the fucking phone down and be around your family playing games and going to park. Deciding that success means more than how much money you make. And remembering who you were before stress, responsibility, expectations, and life buried that person. I’m still figuring plenty of shit out. But I know this: I never want to lose myself chasing success again. Build the business. Make the money. Chase ridiculous goals. But find your purpose. Take care of yourself. Be there for your people. And actually enjoy some of this shit while you’re here. ❤️ Sometimes the biggest transformation isn’t becoming someone new. It’s finally finding your way from hell and back to yourself 💪🏻

These competitive awards were administered by DHCD through the HOME-ARP Developer Subsidy Program, which helps close critical financing gaps so affordable housing projects can move forward.
