Once we've made precast better, more efficient and expanded it's footprint, Altus Group members eventually compete against one another for the same jobs. What was originally intended to be a standard 1 year term as Marketing Committee Chair, was renewed three times when I was asked (by the executive director and the rest of the committee) to continue serving. I chaired this committee for a total of 4 years. My first term was from 2018 through 2020. It was requested that I return to the chairman position for the 2024 year. During my final year as the marketing committee chair, AltusGroup was the winner of the inaugural PCI Marketing Company Achievement Award in recognition of exemplary efforts in promoting precast concrete innovation to the AEC community. www.altusprecast.com

As someone who originally came from an architecture background, but has worked in the precast industry for most of my career, being a part of a design jury was a fascinating experience. The jury consisted of; 3 design architects, 2 structural engineers, 1 university professor and 1 person from the precast industry (myself) giving us a wide range of backgrounds and viewpoints. While it was tough to narrow down from so many excellent entries, contributing to a design jury process was a positive experience. www.pci.org

This involved R&D, data collection / documentation, education and identifying / implementing tangible ways to optimally minimize precast concrete's overall environmental footprint. In addition to the durability, resiliency, longevity and thermal efficiency of the end product, other ways that precast concrete fosters environmental responsibility include its use of recycled materials and regionally harvested / produced materials. www.pci.org

I was called up for jury duty and selected for a two day trial. This was for a domestic battery and aggravated assault case in Johnson County, Kansas. At the suggested invitation of the other 11 jurors, I accepted their unsolicited nomination and served as Foreman, leading the deliberations. The two main guidelines I established were that everyone got a chance to speak and that there was never more than one conversation going on at the same time. This sometimes involved my asking some of the more timid and soft spoken jurors to share their thoughts, thus not allowing a few of the more outspoken juror personalities to dominate the conversation. We discussed the testimonies, analyzed the evidence and thoroughly poured over written instructions that we were provided. We deliberated overnight and after some initial disagreement, we were eventually able to collectively come together and agree on a unanimous verdict. Doing my civic duty by serving on a Johnson County jury was a positive experience.
