Something to execute against over the next 12 months." (The customer went on to thank the banker for always being available and checking in to see how the bank could help.) What is the difference between these relationships? ADVICE. GUIDANCE. The original bank had a strong relationship and was always there asking how they could help. The competitor proactively helped the client build a personalized plan. Business owners value a strong relationship with their banker, but what they value even more is advice and a plan that helps move their business forward. Unfortunately, most banks don't have a consistent way for every banker to deliver this level of advice across every client relationship. You take a shot to the head, the world goes soft for a second, a teammate asks if you're good, and you say yeah, because that's what you're supposed to say. Toughness was the whole culture. You didn't come off the field, you played through it. Here's what nobody told us: the brain keeps score even when you don't. The hits you shake off don't just disappear, and the ones you never report are the ones that never get managed. Going back out on a brain that hasn't recovered is how one bad hit quietly turns into a long-term problem. The real danger was never only the big collision everyone saw. It was the pile of small ones we hid, season after season. That mentality made us tough. It also made us blind. We had no way to know when "I'm fine" was actually true and when it wasn't, so we defaulted to fine every time, because fine kept you on the field. That's the gap we built Chronic Trace to close. Edwin Miller reposted thisEdwin Miller reposted thisA customer of ours has 160 SDRs around the world. Like most large sales orgs, they lose about 30% of them a year. Call it 45 to 50 people walking out the door. Nobody resigns two months in advance, so every departure kicks off the same slow sequence. Two months to find a replacement, because internal recruiters are also hiring engineers, finance people, and everyone else. Then another four to six weeks before the new hire is actually productive. That's roughly three months of an empty chair, every single time. Now put a number on it. If that rep carried a monthly quota of $150k in pipeline, one empty seat costs $450k in pipeline that never got created. Spread that across 30 seats a year and you're staring at $13.5 million in pipeline that simply never existed. The brutal part is that this number appears nowhere. No P&L has a line for deals that were never started. So when companies build their build-versus-buy spreadsheet, they compare a rep's salary against a partner's program fee and conclude the internal option is cheaper. They're comparing the wrong things. The real question isn't what a rep costs. It's what an empty seat costs while you spend twelve weeks filling it, when a partner already trained on your motion could backfill it in one. They say it like it's a weakness. As though putting a 22-24 yo at the start of their career into sales is somehow a gamble. The reality is a little different. Graduates are still an important part of who we hire, but increasingly we build the profile around what each client actually needs. Sometimes that's a hungry graduate starting their career. Sometimes it's someone with a few years of experience already behind them. But even if the "fresh graduates" label were completely accurate, I think it misses the most interesting part of the story... Over the last few years, I've lost count of how many clients, former clients and even prospects we've never done business with have contacted me with a very different question: "Would you give my son or daughter a shot?" They've seen what happens to young people who come through memoryBlue's rank. The coaching, the investment in human capital, the culture and the confidence our people build. They've watched people arrive with very little sales experience and leave able to run a conversation with exec, handle objections and build a career. Last week at Black Hat in Las Vegas, my first meeting was with the CRO of one of our clients. Before we talked about pipeline or anything else on the agenda, he wanted to tell me about his son, who had just started in our Dallas office. That's how the meeting started, with a proud dad talking about his son. And that's when the irony really struck me. The thing some competitors try to position as our weakness (developing people at the beginning of their careers) has become one of the strongest endorsements of our business. When a CRO / CEO / CMO trusts you with their company's pipeline, that's important. When they trust you with their child's career, that means something more. We're obviously in the business of building pipeline and revenue for our clients, but I'm very proud of the careers we build along the way.

Most controllers publish monthly financials knowing they're not 100% accurate. And that’s a systems problem. Today, I'm joined by Jen Speerbrecher, Vice President at Veramatic, to discuss why manual accounting is no longer sustainable, what it actually costs dealers in razor-thin margin environments, and how automation is changing what the back office looks like day to day. Top lessons learned from Jen: 1. Your DMS is a system of record. It is not a system of truth. — The DMS doesn't care if what you're putting into it is accurate. It was never designed to be a source of truth, just a place to store transactions. — Accounting offices pull from factory reports, banking reports, FNI remittances, parts invoices, and more—none formatted the same way, none from the same source. — The errors that get found are the easy ones. The costly ones are the inaccuracies buried in financial statements that nobody knows to look for. 2. The back office is the restaurant kitchen. And the recipe is never clear. — GMs and dealer principals assume it's magic happening back there. The reality is the ingredients change every single time. — The result: Controllers are paying people to do the same work multiple times, then paying them again to find and fix the mistakes they made doing it. — On today's margins, every penny counts. Writing off $100 here and $10,000 there adds up fast when it compounds across months. 3. Automation removes the human thought process from the equation. — When a computer processes a parts invoice or FNI remittance based on consistent reference points, it gets it right every time and faster than any employee can. — The outcome is confidence, because controllers stop crossing their fingers when they submit financials. 4. The best controllers are the ones willing to change how they've always done it. — Jen spent 30 years in automotive accounting, ran a consolidated office for a 35-store group, and was skeptical of automation herself. — She then spent three months trying to prove the technology would break something. But she couldn't find a single error. 5. This is a need, not a want. — Controllers are the ones driving adoption, because they're the ones who feel the pain most directly and know something has to change. — The dealers who implement it consistently say the same thing: they had no idea how big the problem actually was until they could see it clearly.
