Jeff Ostermann shared thisI’m incredibly thankful for Chuck’s dedication and the story that makes everything we do today possible!Jeff Ostermann shared thisBefore Sweetwater (@sweetwatersound) became America's largest online music retailer, it was just one musician trying to make ends meet from the back of a beat-up Volkswagen bus. Chuck Surack wasn't chasing a billion-dollar business. He was chasing gigs. He turned the bus into a mobile recording studio, parked outside schools, churches, and concert venues, and recorded performances before editing the tapes in his trailer at night. The business kept evolving. When Chuck got his hands on a groundbreaking Kurzweil synthesizer, he didn't just learn to play it—he took it apart, figured out how it worked, and became an expert other musicians relied on. Soon artists weren't just asking for technical help. They were asking where to buy their gear. That changed everything. Instead of focusing on selling products, Sweetwater built its reputation around helping musicians make the right decisions. Dedicated sales engineers, exceptional customer service, handwritten thank-you notes, and even the famous bag of candy turned one-time buyers into lifelong customers. It's a reminder that great companies don't always begin with a grand vision. Sometimes they begin by solving one problem so well that people keep asking you to solve the next one. Jeff Ostermann shared thisOne of the biggest shifts in leadership is realizing that your value isn't measured by how much you accomplish yourself. It's measured by how many other people become capable because of your leadership. I've watched leaders unintentionally limit their teams and organizations by holding on to the work they enjoy most. The important customer relationships. The strategy. The presentations. The high-profile projects. The visible wins. Usually it's not about ego. It's about trust. Or habit. Or believing, "It's just faster (or better) if I do it." But every responsibility we keep purely for ourselves is one less opportunity for someone else to grow and to expand the capacity of our organization. Delegation isn't about walking away from the work or mindlessly handing it to someone else. It's about inviting someone else into work that matters. You stay engaged. You coach. You ask questions. You remove obstacles. You keep a watchful eye on the outcome. The goal isn't to do less. The goal is to help someone else become capable of doing more. If you've ever wondered why someone on your team isn't stepping up, ask yourself a different question: What am I holding too tightly? What have I quietly labeled as mine instead of ours? As I look back at Sweetwater's growth over the years, I'm convinced it wouldn't have happened if leaders had kept holding on to yesterday's responsibilities. At every stage, someone had to be willing to invite another person into work that mattered. And someone else had to raise their hand, embrace the opportunity, and prove they were ready for more. I'm grateful for the leaders who still make room today. And I'm just as grateful for the people who step into that space, stretch themselves, and help build something bigger than any one person could have built alone. That's how organizations and teams grow. And I think it's one of the most meaningful things a leader can leave behind. #Leadership #Growth #Culture #Sweetwater

Jeff Ostermann shared thisThis year, Sweetwater is celebrating 20 years since we moved into our campus on US Highway 30. Looking at photos, it's amazing to see how much has changed. The campus has grown. The facilities have expanded. The amenities have improved. The business has transformed. But this milestone also reminded me of something important.... Facilities are part of a culture. But, no matter how amazing, they are not culture. Twenty years ago, great facilities, employee amenities, wellness programs, and unique perks genuinely differentiated workplaces. Today, they're still valuable....but they're largely table stakes amongst larger employers. The workplace has evolved. Employees have more choices, more information, and more visibility into what great culture looks like. As a result, the equation has changed. Twenty years ago, culture was often measured by places and experiences. Today, it's measured by trusting relationships. Think about the best manager you've ever worked for. It probably wasn't because they had the nicest office, the best building, or the most outgoing personality. It was because they listened. They followed through. They communicated honestly. They treated people fairly. You knew where you stood with them. That's what employees remember. A free lunch can improve someone's day. A trusted leader can improve someone's entire experience at work. The culture books of 20 years ago that shaped many leaders weren't wrong. They were right for their time. But the organizations building exceptional cultures today aren't simply creating better workspaces. They're creating better leaders who form better relationships. As we celebrate 20 years on our campus, I'm grateful for the buildings we've built. But I'm even more grateful for the trust, relationships, and leadership that ultimately define our culture.

Jeff Ostermann shared thisThis weekend, while visiting Nashville with my daughter as she explores college options, we had the chance to experience CMA Fest. What an incredible event! But what impressed me most wasn't just the music. Every ticket sold helps support music education through the CMA Foundation, creating opportunities for students across the country to learn, create, and grow through music. That's a mission worth celebrating. A huge thank you to the Country Music Association (CMA) and CMA Foundation team (including Victoria Rutledge, Michelle Kirk, and Jenny Methling, MS IMC) for their hospitality - and the artists, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who makes this event possible year after year. The impact reaches far beyond the stages and crowds in Nashville. CMA Fest is a great reminder that music has the power not only to entertain, but to educate, inspire, and change lives. (And, yes, I did don a cowboy hat for the event!)

Jeff Ostermann shared thisVery proud to be a part of launching this community effort in our hometown!Jeff Ostermann shared thisIntroducing, the Fort Wayne Music Office. Last year, as outlined in our 10-year Tourism Master Plan, we conducted an analysis of Allen County’s music landscape with the help of Sound Diplomacy. This resulted in a 17-step strategy to grow the local music economy. The first step was the creation of a Music Board, established earlier in 2026. Today, the Music Board announced the Fort Wayne Music Office to set this strategy in motion. The goal of the Music Office is to establish Fort Wayne as a widely recognized music destination - known for a strong music economy, a diverse music scene, exceptional music infrastructure, and support for local talent. As the Music Office is established, the Music Board is beginning the search for its first Executive Director. Those interested in applying can learn more at FortWayneMusicOffice.com. Jeff Ostermann shared thisOne of the most satisfying parts of my work is getting to build relationships with our many great nonprofit partners and to help shape and lend our support to efforts like this one. Job very well done to Mike Wasserman and the entire Music Will team on the National Instrument Fund and all the amazing work they do year round!Jeff Ostermann shared this“Sweetwater’s mission is to make musical dreams come true. But without music education, there’s no dream to pursue, and that’s why we love partnering with Music Will and the educators who create that initial spark.” — Mike Clem, Sweetwater CEO Access to instruments can change the trajectory of a student’s life. Through our partnership with Music Will and the National Instrument Fund, instruments are reaching schools and classrooms where they are needed most, helping programs grow, empowering teachers to say yes, and giving students the opportunity to discover who they are through music. Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not, and when those two things finally meet, the impact extends far beyond the classroom into families, communities, and futures. Soon, instruments and music gear, from electric and acoustic guitars to drums, keyboards, and sound systems, will be delivered to 34 schools in more than 20 different states, helping launch new programs and expand existing ones where more students are ready to participate. We are grateful to support the educators who show up every day to create that first spark and the young musicians who are just beginning to discover what is possible through music. Jeff Ostermann shared thisMy first big concert back in middle school was Skid Row. A friend had an extra ticket and invited me along even though I wasn't a huge metal guy. But it was my first real taste of live music....the energy, the crowd, the sound. Fast forward a few decades, and Sweetwater announced earlier this month that we're helping Skid Row search for their next lead singer. It's a crazy full-circle moment that is a bit more than a funny coincidence....it’s a reminder of what drives everything we do here. Whether it’s a kid picking up their first instrument, a school program getting gear, or an iconic band ready to take the stage again.....helping and serving those who love music is what we're all about. Just curious....what was your first concert that made an impression?

Jeff Ostermann liked thisJeff Ostermann liked thisLast week was one of those magic weeks at Sweetwater. Monday morning I walk in to find an email asking if I'm free to play guitar that afternoon, and a few hours later I'm sitting across a table from Josh Scott of JHS Pedals filming a pedal shootout video. Tuesday I launched a closed beta for a personal side project, a guitar maintenance tracking app that I started developing after management sent out a heads up about a vibe coding hack night hosted by Northeast Indiana Innovation Community and Astra Applications here in Fort Wayne. Wednesday I had the absolute honor to grab dinner with Fred Gretsch, the industry legend who has been carrying the torch of his great grandfather's Gretsch Company for the past 60 years. He was kind enough to autograph my Penguin's headstock! Thursday I spent several hours like a kid in a candy store, unboxing guitars that I dreamed up with the folks at Fender Custom Shop and getting to see the finished products for the first time. It's wild to see them go from being spreads of raw wood that I picked out in Corona to now being world-class instruments ready to play. Friday I got to show off all of those guitars to the sales team during office hours and at a public-facing Custom Shop Road Show event later that evening. Keith Coy and I sat in a panel discussion with folks from the custom shop (including 3 master builders!) talking about their approach to construction, our approach to design philosophy, and celebrating the amazing partnership that we have with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. Can't wait to see what's in store this week... #Sweetwater #WeAreSweetwater #FullTimeDream #Guitar

Sweetwater Senior Vice President and Chief People & Culture Officer Jeff Ostermann opened the retreat with remarks welcoming attendees to our Fort Wayne campus and setting the stage for three days of conversation, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Participants took part in keynote presentations, fireside conversations, master classes, workshops, film screenings, and hands-on sessions throughout our Fort Wayne campus, including experiences focused on music production, sound design, film scoring, DJ education, and Dolby Atmos. Hosting the retreat gave us an opportunity to bring together people who are shaping the future of music in both the classroom and the industry. It also reflected what has always been central to Sweetwater: creating spaces where musicians, educators, and creators can connect, share their expertise, and help more people experience the power of making music. What I wish every leader knew (i.e. why I created a LinkedIn Learning course). For years, I watched smart, committed leaders get stuck. It’s not because they lacked clarity, but because they were trying to solve unsolvable problems. They were looking for a clear either/or solution to a both/and problem: ❓Should we focus on the long-term growth or short-term performance? ❓Should we grow fast or build sustainably? ❓Should we push for results or be more supportive of our employees? ❓Should I stay in a role I’m familiar with or leap into the unknown? These aren’t questions with one right answer. They are tensions we have to live with—and lead through. These paradoxes cannot be solved; they need to be embraced. To do so, we need a more complex, thoughtful both/and approach. Twenty years ago, when I first started talking about paradoxes, most leaders scrunched their noses or rolled their eyes. Paradoxes, they assumed, were an idea that belonged in a philosophy class or a yoga studio. Now, twenty years later, leaders are coming to me and asking for more. They get it… the challenges that we face are not either/or dilemmas but both/and paradoxes. They want to better understand what we know about paradoxes and want the skills to more effectively address them. That’s why I created a LinkedIn Learning class. I wanted to help leaders better deal with the complexities in today’s world. In this course, I dive into what we mean by paradoxes and identify what it means to apply both/and thinking. The goal is to build a collective skill for us all to better live into the both/and. Whether or not you have a subscription to LinkedIN Learning, this link will allow you access to the course for free (for a short period of time). https://lnkd.in/eeMVn58c Both/And Thinking is a movement, inviting leaders into more creative, integrative thinking. I’m excited to have you join us in this growing movement. Feel free to leave any comments here. LinkedIn for Learning. Alison Hankey (She/Her) Haley Deming. Victoria Taylor

Erin also discusses how trust-driven, human-centered leadership creates stronger cultures and more sustainable success—especially in a world increasingly shaped by AI and constant change. 👉 This episode is a reminder that the most impactful leadership begins within—and that courage, clarity, and compassion are not soft skills, but strategic advantages. 🎧 Listen to the full episode at your favorite platform: https://lnkd.in/e9EP-nkH #selfleadership #executives #innergrowth #resilience

DateLine 12/14/25: HR Times Published By Brookemeade Holdings LLC: The Hidden Truth Behind Employee Turnover Why People Quit and How Smart Companies Win Them Back! INTRODUCTION Employee turnover is more than a statistic—it’s a narrative of shifting priorities and unmet expectations. This article explores the underlying causes of turnover and offers actionable strategies to create workplaces where people choose to stay. From cultural dynamics to leadership practices, every factor plays a role in shaping employee decisions. THE COST OF TURNOVER The cost of turnover extends far beyond recruitment expenses. When an employee leaves, companies lose institutional knowledge, disrupt team dynamics, and often experience delays in project timelines. Research indicates that replacing an employee can cost between 50% and 200% of their annual salary, factoring in hiring, training, and lost productivity. Moreover, frequent turnover can damage employer branding, making it harder to attract top talent. WHY EMPLOYEES WALK AWAY Why do employees walk away from seemingly stable jobs? A toxic or negative work environment is the leading cause, eroding trust and collaboration. Poor leadership and lack of managerial support follow closely, leaving employees feeling undervalued. Career stagnation is another major factor—when growth opportunities vanish, motivation declines. Work-life imbalance and burnout push many to seek healthier environments, while others leave due to misalignment with organizational purpose. Here’s what the data tells us: Toxic or Negative Work Environment – 32.4% Poor Leadership and Management – 20% Lack of Career Growth – 15% Feeling Undervalued or Disrespected – 12% Work-Life Imbalance and Burnout – 10% Disconnect from Purpose – 6% Inability to Use Strengths – 4.6% TURNING THE TIDE Successful organizations build cultures rooted in trust and inclusivity. Leadership development is critical—managers must lead with empathy and clarity. Career advancement programs keep employees engaged, while recognition initiatives foster a sense of belonging. Flexibility in work arrangements and competitive compensation remain essential, but aligning roles with individual strengths creates lasting loyalty. Retention strategies are not one-size-fits-all; they demand continuous evaluation and adaptation. Key strategies that drive impact include: Build a Positive Culture – Impact: 90% Strengthen Leadership – Impact: 85% Offer Career Development – Impact: 80% Recognition and Engagement – Impact: 75% Competitive Compensation and Benefits – Impact: 70% Flexibility and Work-Life Balance – Impact: 65% Align Work with Strengths – Impact: 60% LET'S TALK We’d love to continue the conversation and explore how we can help you build a thriving workplace. Schedule a time to connect with us and let’s discuss strategies tailored to your organization’s needs. Click the link below to book a meeting at your convenience: https://lnkd.in/e7NT_v_v

I was struggling to hear what was said. When I first stepped into the CHRO role, I was prepared. I knew the numbers, had a grasp on the strategy, and was ready to align HR with the business. What I wasn't prepared for was the disconnect. I'd leave a meeting with our CEO, and something felt off. It wasn't about a lack of financial fluency or a disagreement on priorities; it was a fundamental gap in how we saw the world. We were speaking, but we weren't communicating. 💬 I've come to realize the common advice to speak the language of the business misses a deeper truth. Maybe what we really need is to 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗥. 🔄 Here's the mismatch I experienced: 🔸 I was trained to de-risk; he wanted to know where the opportunities are. 🔸 I was taught to seek consensus; the business was rewarding disruptive ideas. 🔸 My focus was on process; his priority was outcomes. This wasn't just a communication gap; it was a mindset mismatch that hindered my impact. To truly earn a seat at the top table, I had to rewire my own thinking. ⚙️ It starts with unlearning the assumptions, inherited playbooks, and habits that once earned us credibility but now limit our influence. Below are some of the examples I had to unlearn 👇 What has been your biggest “unlearning” in an HR leader role? 💭 📌 If this post resonates, save it for later or share it with a colleague who’s navigating similar challenges.

What a powerful conversation yesterday at the ATD Kansas City Panel: Partnering with AI — The Human Side of Change Management in Talent Development. I had the pleasure of facilitating this conversation with three experts in the space Kevin D. Meyer, Sheryl Kurtis, and Terri S. Turner. We opened with this truth: AI isn’t coming for our jobs—it's coming for our comfort zones. And throughout the discussion, that theme kept showing up. We explored three core areas: 🔹 Mindset shifts that either accelerate or block AI adoption 🔹 Change management principles for navigating AI-driven transformation 🔹 Practical strategies to build AI confidence while staying grounded in what makes development deeply human Because this work isn’t just about what AI can do. It’s about how we show up in the process. And as I shared in my closing: AI won’t take your job—but it will challenge you to evolve. The question isn’t whether we’ll adapt, but how: With fear and resistance? Or with curiosity and confidence? The tools are here. The mindsets matter. The change management principles still apply. And you get to choose how you partner with this technology. As we navigate what’s next, let’s stay anchored in what makes talent development deeply human, and be willing to disrupt ourselves to grow. #ATDKC #ChangeManagement #AIAdoption #TalentDevelopment #FutureOfWork #LearningAndDevelopment #Leadership #WorkLifeSynergy
