This summer, Usher's New Look and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Detroit created a new pathway into the entertainment trades, hiring young professionals as interns for the R&B Tour. Behind every show is an entire economy and workforce: production, wardrobe, lighting, sound, multimedia, logistics, touring operations and hundreds of careers many young people never get the opportunity to see—much less enter. Congratulations to our inaugural cohort. They started the summer as interns and finishing as permanent members of the tour crew. Every summer, parents have the same question: where can my kids go that's safe, that keeps them learning, that I can actually afford? That question is why we launched Occupy the Summer. Without somewhere positive to go, kids lose the structure, mentorship, and safe spaces that help them grow. In just three weeks, Occupy the Summer has already reached 10,000 Detroit youth through expanded rec center hours, a new late night basketball league, and weekly neighborhood activations. Today, we announced the next step, together with Ballmer Group and United Way of Southeast Michigan DiscoverWorks programs, by expanding access to 11,000 more young people across Detroit this summer. This is Rise Higher in action. I've always believed that investing in our youth and their education is everything, the foundation for the Detroit we're building. Giving parents peace of mind and giving kids somewhere to belong isn't separate from that mission. It is that mission. Detroit's kids deserve every chance to thrive. The honor comes 10 years after his national anthem protest sparked a national debate over athlete activism. Kaepernick, whose Know Your Rights Camp recently renewed a $1 million commitment to Black and brown communities, called the recognition “simultaneously humbling and a responsibility.”

He didn’t argue, didn’t lose control, didn’t try to prove anything in that moment. He stayed calm and said, “I walk out of here in triumph.” That’s not anger. That’s clarity. And if you’ve spent time in corporate environments, you’ve seen this pattern. High performers who carry teams, bring in results, fix problems no one else can… but get taken for granted because they don’t complain. Until one day, they’re gone. No warning. No chaos. Just a resignation that hits harder than any outburst ever could. That’s what toxic work culture does. Not always loud, not always obvious. It slowly normalises: You are being overlooked. Your effort is expected, not appreciated. Your personal life is invisible. And the worst part? You start convincing yourself it’s normal. But here’s the shift most people never make: Knowing your worth isn’t about demanding attention. It’s about recognising when you’re no longer respected… and acting on it without needing validation. That’s why the “quiet storm” hits differently. Because when someone calmly walks away, it’s not impulsive. It’s a decision they’ve already made a hundred times in their head. So ask yourself: Are you growing where you are… or just being used because you deliver? And if you’re in a leadership position, here’s the harder question: Do your best people feel valued… or are you one calm resignation away from losing them? Because the people who say the least… often leave the loudest impact. Shawn H. Wilson liked thisShawn H. Wilson liked thisWhen Dolly Parton died on 25 August 2026 at the age of 80, the tributes came from the places you would expect: Nashville, Los Angeles, London. But they also came from Nairobi, Johannesburg, Limpopo and across East and Southern Africa. It is easy to think of country music as an exclusively American sound, rooted in the American South. But Dolly Parton’s music travelled far beyond the Smoky Mountains. In Kenya, her songs have been part of the radio landscape for decades. Jolene, 9 to 5 and Coat of Many Colors became songs that generations of listeners knew by heart. And perhaps it was the stories within her songs that made them travel so well. Coat of Many Colors, for example, is a story about growing up with very little, about a mother who transforms scraps of fabric into something precious, and about learning that dignity and love are worth more than material wealth. Those themes are hardly confined to Tennessee. Nelson Mandela was reportedly a fan of Jolene, with Tokyo Sexwale recalling that Mandela chose the song when prisoners on Robben Island were occasionally allowed to select music for the loudspeakers. Later, Dolly recorded with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, bringing the extraordinary harmonies of the South African vocal group into her own music. Their collaboration on Peace Train was followed by another on Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door. There was, however, also a more complicated chapter. Dolly performed at Sun City in 1982 during apartheid, a decision she later said she regretted because she had not understood the politics surrounding the venue. She subsequently became one of the major international artists to pledge that she would not perform in apartheid South Africa. Her legacy on the continent therefore is a story of cultural exchange, sometimes joyful, sometimes complicated, but ultimately deeply human. And then there is the part of Dolly’s legacy that may matter most: her commitment to literacy. Through her Imagination Library, she helped provide free books to children around the world, inspired in part by her own father, who never learned to read. More than 100 million books have now been distributed. That mission feels particularly significant in a continent where access to books and early childhood literacy remains such an important part of educational development. Dolly Parton was never simply an American country music icon. She was a storyteller whose songs about poverty, ambition, family, heartbreak, dignity and hope travelled across oceans and found new meaning in places she could never have imagined. Africa made her music its own. And perhaps that is the greatest legacy an artist can leave: to create something so deeply human that, decades and continents later, people hear it and think, this story is about us too. I began my career in professional sports with the Pistons as a Game Night Intern in 2014. To now have the opportunity to serve this organization as a Vice President is something I do not take for granted.
