Universal Pictures' 'The Odyssey' got off to a historic start, becoming Christopher Nolan's biggest opening weekend ever while setting multiple studio, domestic and international box office records.
The Odyssey is often remembered as the greatest story of homecoming. But perhaps it is also one of the most unsettling questions ever asked about victory. Can a man truly return home after helping destroy the home of another? Can he cross the threshold as the same husband, father and human being who once left it? Odysseus survives war, monsters, storms and gods. Yet the most difficult sea may be the one inside memory. He carries Troy with him: the horse, the fire, the dead, the lies that saved him and destroyed others. The road home is not only across geography. It passes through everything a man has done in order to survive. Perhaps that is why the story still belongs to us. Every age creates enemies, calls them monsters, destroys their homes and then asks its soldiers to return unchanged. But no one returns unchanged from the destruction of another world. The question is not only whether Odysseus will reach Ithaca, but whether the man who reaches it can still recognize home — and whether home will recognize him. The Odyssey is not simply about finding the way back. It is about whether there is an innocent way back at all.

In a world with endless streaming services, infinite scrolling and short-form content fighting for our attention every second, it’s fascinating to see millions of people still choose to leave their homes, sit in a dark theatre with complete strangers for three hours, and immerse themselves in one of humanity’s oldest stories. That says a lot. Technology changes(silent era to sound- black n white to color etc). Distribution changes. Formats change. But our need for great storytelling doesn’t. People will always make time for content that makes them feel. That creates emotion, empathy and shared experiences. Story is still king. Great content will always find its audience. Congratulations to Christopher Nolan and the entire Universal team on an incredible opening.
