The most important statistic in the IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report 2026 isn't the $4.99M average breach cost. It's that AI-driven attacks surged 56% year-over-year. That number signals something bigger. Cybersecurity is entering an era where attackers can scale faster than ever before. The question for security leaders is no longer: "Will we be targeted?" It's: "Can we respond at the speed of AI?" The gap between attack velocity and defense velocity may become the defining cybersecurity challenge of this decade. It’s here! The swimsuit issue for cyber nerds like me. The latest IBM cost of a data beach report was just released and supports what we all know. Concentration and consolidation in tech along with the rise in AI mean costs are up! Larger breaches, longer to detect and contain. Tech companies remain a top target. #cybersecurity #ibm #zurichcanada

AI-driven attacks increased 56%, led by deepfake impersonation and AI-enabled malware, while the global average cost of a data breach rose 12% to a record $4.99 million. AI model inversion attacks averaged $6 million in breach costs, reflecting the growing difficulty of protecting training data and other sensitive information. Organizations using security AI and automation extensively recorded $1.93 million in average savings compared with organizations using none. #ArtificialIntelligence #Cybersecurity #AISecurity #DataSecurity #SecurityAutomation https://lnkd.in/eKdegUyG

The healthcare industry remains the most expensive sector for data breaches, IBM’s annual Cost of a Data Breach Report found, with the average cost of a breach reaching $6.64 million in 2026. At the same time, AI-driven attacks are accelerating and driving up costs. Organizations that experienced AI-driven attacks incurred about $1 million more in breach costs than those that experienced a traditional attack. The more sophisticated threat actors become, the more organizations should assess not only their cybersecurity controls but also their resilience and risk-transfer strategies. One thing that jumped out at me in IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report: Attackers are moving from human speed to machine speed. That's a problem because many organizations are still defending at human speed. AI-enabled attacks increased 56% year over year. The technology is changing both sides of the cybersecurity equation. Are defenses evolving fast enough? IBM's latest report is worth a read. https://lnkd.in/gY_Tupgx

The new IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report highlights a concerning trend: AI-driven attacks increased 56% year over year as organizations face increasingly sophisticated AI-powered threats. At the same time, the average cost of a data breach climbed 12% to $4.99 million, reinforcing the need for organizations to continue to enhance proactive cybersecurity. The good news? Organizations using offensive security testing—including penetration testing, vulnerability testing, and red teaming—reported breach costs averaging $211K below the global benchmark. That's a strong business case for investing in preventative cybersecurity measures that reduce risk before an attacker can exploit it. That's where External Attack Surface Management (EASM) and penetration testing work together. EASM provides continuous visibility into your internet-facing assets and identifies exposures as they emerge. Penetration testing validates which vulnerabilities can actually be exploited. Together, they help organizations reduce risk, prioritize remediation, and close security gaps before they become costly breaches. Want to see what attackers can already see?
