𝗕𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: 𝗔 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 In today's investment landscape, understanding the composition of your mutual funds is essential, particularly when it comes to overlapping holdings. Overlap across different mutual funds can lead to unnecessary concentration in specific stocks, potentially increasing risk and reducing diversification. Take for instance the comparison between ICICI Prudential Large Cap Fund and SBI Large Cap Fund. Despite both being large-cap funds, they share 46% of their holdings, with prominent stocks such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, and Larsen & Toubro making up a significant portion of their portfolios. This overlap suggests that an investor may unknowingly increase their exposure to these stocks through both funds, missing out on potential diversification benefits. Similarly, when comparing Kotak Midcap Cap Fund with Axis Mid Cap Cap Fund, the 46% overlap includes stocks like Fortis Healthcare, JK Cement, and Bharti Hexacom. Investors in both funds could find themselves overly exposed to these mid-cap stocks, which may not align with their risk appetite. Even in the small-cap space, we see overlaps. The Nippon India Small Cap Fund and Axis Small Cap Fund have a 24% overlap, with stocks like MCX of India and HDFC Bank featuring prominently. Small-cap stocks are inherently volatile, and duplicating positions across multiple funds could magnify that risk. Finally, balancing funds also present similar concerns. The overlap between ICICI Prudential Balanced Adv Fund and HDFC Balanced Adv Fund stands at 49%, with significant holdings in ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Reliance Industries. Although these funds are designed to provide balanced exposure to equities and debt, their overlapping equity exposure could dilute the intended diversification. Before investing in multiple funds, it’s critical to assess their overlapping holdings to ensure you're achieving true diversification. A thoughtful review can help prevent an imbalance in your portfolio and ensure that your investments align with your financial goals.
